Phyrexians & Dovin's Return?

New 09 Sep 2022 Asked by 4blackout 76 Comments

The Phyrexians are my favorite Magic villain, but now that they're finally back in full swing I'm getting worried they'll disappear forever once this story arc is done, like Dovin Baan did (he was my another favorite villain of mine). Do you think Dovin Baan and the Phyrexians will ever return?

For historical context, at the end of the Weatherlight Saga the Phyrexians (Yawgmoth’s) were permanently destroyed.

Dovin Baan's Departure

New 19 Jan 2020 Asked by 4blackout 79 Comments

Where can I express my frustrations about Dovin Baan being killed off screen in the novels? His death didn't even get a card, and it is a huge waste of an interesting villain with some grey morals.

Write an email with your thoughts, email it to me in the link in the last paragraph of my columns, and I’ll forward it to the proper people.

Time-Travel on Ravnica?

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by kandykidzero 41 Comments

If Justicar's Portal mentions that it allows the Azorius to arrive before the crime happens, doesn't that mean Dovin Baan has introduced time-travel to Ravnica, and if so, since he is under Bolas' control then things would seem very heavily in favor for Bolas.

Dovin is able to predict things through his ability to read weaknesses in structures and systems. No time travel.

Dovin Baan's Quote Insight

New 10 Jan 2019 Asked by briarstorm 175 Comments

“Give me eight walkers, I'll give you the city." -Dovin Baan What are the coincidences that team Bolas has 8 known walkers (including Bolas, Liliana and Tezzeret) and team Gatewatch has 8 members as well? That quote wasn’t referring to Kaladesh and Walking Ballistas was it?

As I like to say: There are no coincidences. : )

Nahiri Mono-White Villain

New 05 Aug 2018 Asked by zanmor 37 Comments

Nahiri feels to red for some people to be the white villain. For me, Dovin Baan is pretty essentially blue as well as white. I don't think he'd fit the bill if we're talking a mono-white villain.

Few of our planeswalkers are monocolored.

Nahiri: White Villain?

New 05 Aug 2018 Asked by ihaveaten 58 Comments

Regarding Nahiri as the 'White' Villain walker: I agree with those asking for Dovin Baan. It's not that Nahiri isn't evil enough, it's that she's not white enough. Her only iteration so far felt *very* red, and with what she's done and where we left her, it's hard to see her transforming into a character not motivated by anger. Especially not while still being evil.

She used white means to achieve a red end.

I'd rather have Dovin Baan become the white villain planeswalker than Nahiri.

He could be.

Gatewatch Villain Dynamics

New 18 Mar 2018 Asked by shadowstar91 74 Comments

"Have you not been paying attention to the story, they’ve been collecting all sorts of villains - Ob Nixilis, Nahiri, Dovin Baan, etc." You seem to be the one that hasn't been paying attention. Nahiri never even met the Gatewatch, her feud was with Sorin. The Gatewatch don't even know of her and now that Nahiri believes Innistrad to be destroyed, she's done until you guys bring her back. And Dovin also wasn't really an enemy. He was a man doing his job that just happened to be on the wrong side.

The Gatewatch foiled Nahiri’s plan (as far as Nahiri knows) and they kept Dovin from getting what he wanted. Each has a reason to have issues with the Gatewatch. That’s all you need to make future villains.

Gatewatch Rogues Gallery

New 18 Mar 2018 Asked by sty2hty 69 Comments

Is there any possibility of giving the Gatewatch a rogues gallery? Bolas is a great villain, but i would like to see more villains pop up for them to deal with.

Have you not been paying attention to the story, they’ve been collecting all sorts of villains - Ob Nixilis, Nahiri, Dovin Baan, etc.

Villain Color Identity

Are primary-green and primary-blue villains on the storyline short-list?

Two of Kaladesh’s villains were Tezzeret and Dovin Baan, both of which have a strong element of blue.

Dovin Baan Reception

New 08 Jul 2017 Asked by emangamer-deactivated20180125 34 Comments

I forgot it's my birthday yesterday. So as is tradition, I'd like to ask color philosophy instead of trivia. How well was dovin baan received? Villans in non-black/white have always been under represented. What are the odds of seeing more of them in the future?

We like having villains in all combinations of colors.Happy Birthday!

Dovin Baan Future

New 24 Jun 2017 Asked by ashmount-blog 59 Comments

Other than in a return to Kaladesh how likely would it be for Dovin Baan to make a reappearance? I think he had a really interesting story arc, only really being by defualt an 'antagonist' for working with the Consulate. It was something different. Would there be space for him to shack up with the Azorius perhaps?

I doubt we’ve seen the last of Dovin.

Representation in Planeswalkers

New 24 Jun 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 233 Comments

I think it's a mistake to avoid non-human planeswalkers just for representation. Not that representation isn't important, but I think that most people would rather see their favorite fantasy race as a planeswalker more than they want to see a planeswalker of their own real-world race. I certainly would. Plus, being non-human doesn't make a planeswalker not of a certain heritage. Dovin Baan is a Vedalken but still clearly Indian. Samut would still be Egyptian even if she was a Khenra.

That is not the message I get from the majority of people asking for representation. Having someone who looks like them is very important.

Planeswalker Gender Representation

New 23 Jun 2017 Asked by arbiterofknollridge 336 Comments

Jace, Gideon, Ajani, Ugin, Ob Nixilis, Sorin, Dovin Baan, Tezzeret, Nicol Bolas. Are all, but 2, reoccurring characters. (Maybe 3 if you count Ob Nixilis.) While there have been 5 or 6 new female planeswalkers past 2 years. That's 3 to 1, or at least 2 to 1. And all but one of those girls were good. (Can you even really call Ugin and Bolas males though? You cant really identify with dragons. Which moves it back to 3 to 1.).

Living in a world where the other gender gets more representation? Welcome to what females experience in pop culture 99% of the time.Note that in Magic at large, male planeswalkers still outnumber female planeswalkers by a bunch. We’re just trying to even the scales.

Rincewindthewanderer males a good point though: almost all of the new non-villain Planeswalkers lately have been female. I get that you're trying to balance things out, but are you concerned at all about trading one alienated player base for another?
