Control Magic

Limited Format Satisfaction

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by justletmereadmyoldblog 28 Comments

Hey Mark, as a limited main I wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of the kinds of cards that we've been getting lately that let us play with all time high power-level effects brought down to a fair level for limited. MKM had a fair Control Magic. OTJ has several, including references to Demonic Tutor, Ray of Command, and Snapcaster, all at uncommon. It's exciting to get to play with classic effects in a way that doesn't disrupt the balance. I'm the most eager to draft I've been since MOM!

It’s an area we’ve been enjoying exploring recently.

Color Pie Changes Request

New 20 May 2023 Asked by scrungus-bungus-the-elder-god 37 Comments

If for some reason another time spiral style set of cards exploring colour pie changes/swaps comes around, can I ask for more act of treason/control magic effects in black?

That’s a weighty “if”. We consider Planar Chaos, at least the color pie swapping to things outside of color pie designs, to be a big mistake.

Color Pie Effects

New 04 Mar 2023 Asked by su92 25 Comments

Why are some effects (discard, counterspells) restricted to one color, but others aren't, even in cases where you don't want too many of them (control magic being secondary in black, spell redirection being in blue/red, stealing opponent's cards in blue/black/red)? Shouldn't all infrequent effects be restricted to one color?

No, it varies based on the effect.

Black's Control Mechanic

New 25 Feb 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 22 Comments

Are cards like Enslave (i.e. mono black Mind Control/Control Magic) a bend or a break? I would like to see more of it in small doses.

We call it tertiary in black, but is used pretty infrequently.

Sixth Color in Planar Chaos

New 02 Jun 2022 Asked by joseph-greenwood 35 Comments

I earlier asked "With the benefit of hindsight, do you wish that Planar Chaos had adopted a sixth color as its main "alternate reality" identity, rather than the color-shifting that actually happened?" and you answered "The sixth color only worked if we redistributed the color pie which is the problem in the first place."
Would you be willing to elaborate further? My understanding was that planar chaos was a problem because it gave colors access to effects that they should not have had. But if you redistributed pieces of various colors to purple, then each (non-purple) color would only have access to effects they had before--they'd just have somewhat fewer of them, and perhaps a different emphasis (i.e. if purple took hard countermagic, then maybe blue would lean harder into control magic for the block). That wouldn't introduce any color breaks, so from a color pie perspective, why is it a problem?

The inability to redistribute would make adding purple harder, but you’re correct that what you’re suggesting is theoretically possible.

Request for Cheaper Black Wrath

New 30 Oct 2021 Asked by kynelan-mdw 103 Comments

Can you please tell us if we will ever get a "Damnation" type Wrath effect in Black that doesn't cost 6 mana or has White pips along with it? I find it super frustrating during spoiler season to see White wrath spells only. I love control magic but hate always having to play White. An example from the new set is By Invitation Only and Path to Peril. Why couldn't By Invitation Only been Black 3(B)(B) because it is sacrifice not destroy? Also why did you have to put a White pip in the Cleave cost for Path to Peril? Can we please get a decent Black Destroy All Creatures in Black that is at max 5 MV?

White is better at it than black. It’s gets it more often and it gets it cheaper. If you don’t want to play white then you don’t get access to the things white is best at at the cost white gets them at.

Powerful Effect Limitations

New 20 Jun 2021 Asked by corillion 36 Comments

Hi MaRo, thanks for all your hard work making Magic. Both Control Magic and Time Walk effects are massively powerful, with Time Walks getting banned even at 7 mana. Is it possible that these effects should get the "Vindicate treatment" of being only doable with two colours?

A second color isn’t the safety valve you think it is. : )

Deciphering 'Control Magic'

New 25 Feb 2021 Asked by jimmycomments 62 Comments

In the name of the card Control Magic, is Control a noun ("the magic of control") or a verb ("take control of this magic")?

Or is it an adjective? Ah, the English language.

Theft in Magic Colors

New 29 Jun 2019 Asked by theuninvitedghost 33 Comments

"Theft is still in blue. (Well, permanent theft" Is it secondary in Black? I know there's been some in Black before. Captivating Vampire and Enslave come to mind. Taking someone else's stuff for yourself seems like a very black thing to me. I know this is a case of tradition, with Control Magic going all the way back to Alpha, but I'd be a big fan of seeing it less in blue and more in Black.

Stealing is tertiary in black. We do it on rare occasion.

Control Magic Logic

New 24 Jan 2018 Asked by zeropercentdiscountcomic 62 Comments

Aren’t control magic effects pretty undermining to the spirit of blue removal? You’d never print a creature destruction spell in blue no matter how high the cost, so why let it steal creatures when that effect is almost strictly better?

Stealing is one of blue’s answers since it can’t destroy creatures.

Animate Library Interaction

New 15 Jan 2018 Asked by illiad4273-blog 28 Comments

Hey Mark! My friends and I were having a discussion regarding the interaction of animate library and control magic. How does card draw work? If my opponent controls my library, can I just not draw? Do I die from not having cards in my library? Can my opponent choose to draw from my library?

Animate Library falls off if you ever lose control as it can only animate a library you control.

Animate Library Mechanic

New 23 Nov 2017 Asked by tbd679-blog 33 Comments

Animate Library says your library becomes an artifact creature on the battlefield. How would it then not be possible for an opponent to gain control of it (by for example casting a Control Magic on it) as another one of your answers in this blog indicates? That doesn't seem to make sense at all.

Animate Library is “Enchant your library”. If the creature gets stolen it becomes an illegal target and the aura falls off. Same as if I have an aura that reads “Enchant red creature” and my opponent turns it blue.

Control Magic Interaction

New 22 Nov 2017 Asked by fuddlesthegatekeeper 24 Comments

if ive animated my library and an opponent takes control of it (e.g. control magic) can they draw from it?

The enchantment drops off if it gets stolen as it becomes an illegal target. Your library then reverts to being your normal library.

Planar Chaos Premise

New 23 Apr 2016 Asked by codenamejd 30 Comments

So if we were to see another Planar Chaos situation, we might get cards like a black Control Magic and a blue Demonic Tutor (ok, probably Demonic)?

I have some bad news about your premise…

Control Magic Rarity

If Control Magic were reprinted today, would it be mythic just for how backbreaking it is in limited?

It would probably be rare.

Control Magic in Standard

is control magic too strong for standard?

Not a developer. Probably.

Mind Control Rarity Effects

New 09 May 2015 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 20 Comments

Would having more Mind Control and Control Magic effects at common and uncommon solve blue's need for a "creature" mechanic?

No. Development has actually chosen over time to move the mechanic out of lower rarities as they are very brutal in limited.

Bribery Card Origin

New 14 Mar 2015 Asked by mrpopogod 64 Comments

Do you know who designed Bribery? I just had an awesome moment this week during a game of Commander where I cast it and my targeted opponent read the card and declared it the most BS thing ever.

Bribery, for good or bad, is my design. I was trying to come up with a super Control Magic.

Red Control Enchantment

New 25 Dec 2014 Asked by blobbert 10 Comments

Could red possibly get a control enchantment similar to control magic but give enchanted creature an effect that is very red-ish like "This creature must attack each turn if able"?

Red can steal for a turn but not permanently so adding a red rider is not enough to justify it.

Red Cloning Potential

New 24 Dec 2014 Asked by vicisaposer-deactivated20231123 19 Comments

Can red get temporaly cloning for a bit (ie, at uncommon and such, not like Kiki jiki) ? It already has temporal control magic..

Possibly although more likely at rare than uncommon.
