Vorthos Character Naming Limits

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by thehigherdissidency 48 Comments

What's the limit of Vorthos character naming, in your opinion? Mirari became Memnarch; Narset of the Khans timeline and Narset of the Dragons timeline; Phage, Akroma, Karona, are all Jeska, that nonsense; Lim-Dul = Raven Man?; is there anything here that's off the table? Can you think of canon Magic lore that Vorthos "nonbo"s with?

If the two different named characters are clearly the evolution of the same being, it’s all good for Vorthos.

Character and Machine Naming

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by neotrup 36 Comments

While I don't think The Skyship Weatherlight qualifies as a character, it does eventually turn into Weatherlight Compleated which does seem to qualify as a character since it moves of its own volition even after it's powerstone was removed. The question comes down to whether naming the character will count the machine that became it. So for a similar question: If I name Memnarch with Vorthos, will it count towards cards with Mirari in them?

If you want to name Weatherlight as a character, I won’t stop your fun. Have at it. Memnarch can count the Mirari, why not?

Rules Text Consistency

New 02 Oct 2023 Asked by jozogozo 27 Comments

Say if The One Ring was reprinted as the Mirari, would you be allowed to change burden counters to something else or would that be too much errata?

The rules text can’t change.

Mirari Card Potential

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by injuryman 30 Comments

To be fair, you've done an artifact representing the Mirari, but you've also done an enchantment representing the radiating waves of power coming out of the Mirari once it was part of a sword, so a second take on the Mirari, perhaps from a different point in time (like wherever in New Phyrexia it was sitting during that whole invasion), wouldn't be that out of left field.

The notes on that post do point out we’ve made multiple cards of many things, so yes, it should be an option.

Mirari Representation Issue

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 43 Comments

I would like to put out there that, on the off chance The One Ring does get reprinted as a UW version, I think you have a perfect artifact in the form of The Mirrari: a wish granting artifact that warps mind and matter; tempting holders with promises of power.

The challenge is we’ve already made a card that represents the The Mirari.EDIT: Fair point from the notes that we make multiple versions of other things.

Artifacts Versus Enchantments

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by felixschweinsteiger 30 Comments

I've noticed some artifacts and enchantments are very similar design-wise, such as Mirari's Wake and Forsaken Monument. It seems as though each could be the others' type, so why aren't they, or why isn't there more distinction? Does the set theme determine whether some cards are artifacts and others enchantments?

The same global effect can be on both an artifact or an enchantment. It depends on the flavor and the larger mechanical needs of the set.

Comparing Ikoria to Otaria

New 08 Apr 2020 Asked by gophilipbowles 40 Comments

Having now read the book and read the worldbuilding article, Ikoria seems to have little to do with Godzilla-type tropes but at least to me it strongly resembles Otaria - not only is it full of giant mutating tribal monsters, there's some unnatural involvement from a legendary artifact, which immediately made me think of the Mirari. Do you know whether reinterpreting a less popular area of Dominaria as its own plane was deliberate?

While there are a few light similarities, they’re pretty different.

Planeswalker Planes Stability

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 62 Comments

Since all the Walker made planes were unstable unless they constantly managed, wont New Phyrexia collapse unless karn fixes it, that's assuming post Mending he has the power to fix it?

Most planeswalkers making planes didn’t have the power of the Mirari.

Plane Creation Limits

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 67 Comments

Are any of the known walkers still capable of creating a whole plane, either from nothingness (like Bolas and his Meditation Realm) or with the aid of an object (like Karn and Mirrodin with the Mirari)?

Not post-Mending.

Mirari and Memnarch Fate

If/when: Return of the Mirari? Or Memnarch?

Major If. The Mirari is currently New Phyrexia and I believe Memnarch is dead.

Mirrodin Birthday

New 28 Oct 2016 Asked by dabean27-blog 29 Comments

Hey Maro the 27th is my birthday and I was wondering if you could tell me anything about my favorite flavorwise mirriodin.

The plane of Mirrodin was made by Karn when he was a pre-Mending planeswalker using the Mirari. Happy Birthday!

Set Symbols Design

New 30 Jun 2016 Asked by dilapidationanddeath 41 Comments

This may be a nit-picky, inconsequential question, but will you ever bring back asymmetrical set symbols? I've noticed with the past several blocks that you've gone with symmetry, but there are people here who miss seeing stalactites, axes, warhammers, gears, books, thunderclouds, Mirari, etc.

Really not my area, but I assume so.

Spells and The Stack

New 30 Nov 2015 Asked by ahhopposabledigits 43 Comments

Regarding spells referencing the stack, I can only find four cards in Magic history whose printed rules text references it: Grip of Chaos, Mirari, Radiate, and Lightning Storm. Only Lightning Storm's oracle text still does, but, I'm not gonna lie, I have no desire to see anything similar in Standard.

The secret is that we can do all the effects we want without having to mention it.

Melek, Izzet Paragon Trivia

New 06 Sep 2015 Asked by northernweird 21 Comments

Hi, Mark. Precious week's Friday was my 19th Birthday and I asked for some trivia, but you were apparently very busy with PAX. I hope it's fine that I ask again. Can you tell us some trivia on my all time favorite commander Melek, Izzet Paragon?

Melek, Izzet Paragon is a popular way we design rares and mythic rares: taking two old popular cards and putting them together. This card was us combining Future Sight with Mirari. Happy Belated Birthday!

Mirari's Design Inspiration

New 31 Jul 2015 Asked by bcrossfire 25 Comments

The story about Mirari's Wake makes me wonder if the Mirari itself shouldn't have had those abilities. What inspired the idea of the instant/sorcery focus? Was it Flashback?

Mirari originally copied every instant and sorcery you cast for free.

Mirari's Wake Origin

New 30 Jul 2015 Asked by dpach 25 Comments

hi mark is my bday and could you tell me about my fav card mirari's wake ?

In the early days, one of my favorite cards was Gauntlets of Might. While working on Judgment design, I realized that the two abilities (Mana Flare and Crusade - to use other old cards as reference - getting extra mana and pumping your creatures) were in green and white which were the two focused colors of the set. That was my inspiration for making Mirari’s Wake.Happy Birthday!

Mirari Trivia

New 02 May 2015 Asked by mcbiskit 32 Comments

For my birthday question today can you give us some trivia on the Mirari? I love how it's story unfolded and I hunger for more info as tho it's calling out to me. I even named my dog Mirari.

The Mirari came about because the story wanted an artifact of great power for the characters to lust after. Originally, the card copied everything for free but that proved too good. Happy Birthday!

Mirari Power Level

New 16 Mar 2015 Asked by ask-thechainwarden 51 Comments

For being an incredibly powerful artifact, the Odyssy Mirari doesn't seem really powerful in my opinion. Was it originally more powerful, or if not why did you choose to represent what the Mirari could do like that?

In design, the Mirari had no cost to copy spells. : )
