Additive Errata Discussion

New 12 May 2024 Asked by somniphagore 18 Comments

I just wanted to voice that with design being more eternal focused/aware I think that should actually make Wizards more willing to do additive errata on older cards (like the ask about command tower getting tower and caverns of souls getting cave). Specifically with additive errata, misplaying an old copy of the card rarely matters and it opens up a lot more space for designing one-ofs with old themes

There is a balance. Cards just not saying what they do is not ideal.

Land Type Updates

New 12 May 2024 Asked by affinityforanime 32 Comments

Would Wizards ever consider doing a "great land type update" errata for older lands? For example make Command Tower a Land - Tower, Cavern of Souls a Land - Cave or Crystal Quarry a Land - Mine.

We consider lots of things, but the bar for such a thing is high.

Arcane Signet Evaluation

New 12 May 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 18 Comments

re: arcane signet - i think "strong" vs "weak" is not the best dichotomy to use. arcane signet is a very fair card on power level for edh, which has a legacy-like card pool. the problem is that it is so widely applicable. command tower is a similar card. it's not powerful like sol ring or ancient tomb, but there is no downside and it works in any deck which contributes to format homogenization. powerful cards are actually easier for players to self-select against in edh.

What spectrum would you use?

Sheldon's Spellbook Format

New 18 Feb 2024 Asked by jambrose 26 Comments

Oh Hi Mark,I just saw the post about Sheldon's spellbook. Was there discussion on doing it as "Commander Collection: Sheldon" as opposed to the retired spellbook naming. Commander being his area and the cards including matching the commander collection formatting (sol ring and command tower) more than the spellbooks (planeswalker with corresponding cards from that character)

I don’t know the specifics, but I do know Sheldon was involved in the early planning.

Command Tower Balance

New 08 Mar 2023 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 41 Comments

Is there a consensus opinion in R&D about whether Command Tower is too good? No other format has had an unconditional rainbow as far as I know but Commander warps the metrics I'm sure so I was curious.

Power level is not my area of expertise. I know color identity makes this tricky to evaluate.

Commander Legends Setting Focus

New 10 Dec 2020 Asked by theawkwardstag 34 Comments

Was Commander Legends ever more focussed around Kylem as a central setting? The crowd lands and return of partner have a very Battlebond feel. I would’ve loved to see Magic’s take on naval coliseum battles and a Kylem specific Command Tower and Path of Ancestry

The partner cards were not all set on Kylem.

Commander Cards Usage Insights

New 10 Mar 2020 Asked by thasgar 29 Comments

"thasgar asked: "This card can only be used as your Commander." Think this could happen? Why not let people play with the card in other formats?" My thinking was - Functionally, wouldn't it be the same as of cards like Command Tower and Arcane Signet?

Utility cards are a different animal from exciting, build-around creatures.

Foil Brawl Cards Availability

New 21 Sep 2019 Asked by mrmoustachemm 26 Comments

Can I open a foil Command Tower in collector's boosters? Or any other foil Brawl cards?

No, I don’t believe you can. I believe you can only get nonfoil versions of the cards in collector’s boosters. I’m not 100% sure on this though.

Collector vs Draft Boosters

New 21 Sep 2019 Asked by nexusgames 28 Comments

For clarity (again, I'm sorry) I thought there *are* cards you can get in the Collector Booster that you *can't* get in the draft booster - which is to say the Brawl-deck-specific cards (such as the three colour legendary creatures, Arcane Signet, and Command Tower), and the buy-a-box promo (Kenrith, the Returned), as well as - and I could be wrong on this count? - borderless planeswalkers and extended art cards. Is that right?

Here’s what you can get in a collector booster that you can’t get in the draft booster:- extended art cards- Standard-legal cards associated with the set, but not appearing in booster packs (things like the unique Brawl cards and the buy-a-box)- nonfoil common showcase cards (and this is just for Throne of Eldraine, a kink from doing a new process)That’s it. Everything else that you can get in a collector booster - foil and nonfoil showcase cards (save the commons) and borderless planeswalker cards are all also available in the draft boosters (just at a lower frequency).

Command Tower Availability

New 05 Sep 2019 Asked by dp-ny 34 Comments

Will Command Tower appear in boosters or only in the Brawl Precons?

It does not appear in Throne of Eldraine boosters.

Errata Subtypes

New 08 Jul 2019 Asked by cteranodon 25 Comments

If a non-creature subtype gets introduced, how likely would it be to errata old cards to get that subtype? For example Reliquary Tower and Command Tower becoming Towers with a capital T? I notice it happens a lot with new creature subtypes, so I'm wondering if that's different for noncreatures, too

We don’t currently do it for subtypes other than creature subtypes.

Command Tower Comparison

New 03 May 2015 Asked by bass-borot 35 Comments

Command Tower is strictly better than basic lands. Its drawback is that it's only usable in Commander (with an additional side effect being that you can only have one), right?

Command Tower is not meant to be a precedent.

Wizards Office Themes

New 07 Apr 2015 Asked by zanmor 198 Comments

So a lot of the offices/meetings rooms at Wizards are themed and named after the theme. Could you share pics of some of your favorites?

wizardsmagic:
There actually aren’t a ton of names in here named directly after MTG lore. We recently named the new downstairs common area Dominaria (with conference rooms Waterdeep and Ravnica attached). Better-than-basic Lands

New 14 Dec 2013 Asked by kallixti 16 Comments

In the format it's designed for, Command Tower is better than a basic land, as it taps for multiple colors and has no drawbacks beyond being nonbasic. Could we similarly see lands which are better-than-basic in Limited, Standard, or other specific formats?

Not likely. Allowing 1 card in a 99-card deck is very different than allowing 4 in a 60-card deck.

Command Zone Clarification

New 19 Nov 2013 Asked by doortonothingness 30 Comments

*adjusts Melvin glasses* The command zone exists outside of Commander (it's where emblems, planes, vanguards and schemes all exist). However, color identity doesn't exist outside Commander so Command Tower is still useless

Um, I meant that.

Command Tower Printing

New 18 Nov 2013 Asked by zegim 9 Comments

Could Command Tower could be printed in a regular expansion?

As it requires the Command zone to work and that’s a zone only used in Commander, I highly doubt we would.

Command Tower Explanation

New 26 Apr 2013 Asked by kallixti 7 Comments

The majority of Magic play doesn't involve commanders, yet Command Tower was still printed. So why can't cards which care about matches be printed?

If we did it, it would be in a supplemental set that had a theme that it made sense with, just as we did with Command Tower.

Format-Specific Cards Future

New 18 Mar 2013 Asked by sarroth 4 Comments

What are your thoughts on cards designed mostly for other formats, like Imperial Mask, Team Spirit, Fractured Powerstone, or even Command Tower, which cannot be played outside of Commander? Could we see more team play or Commander specific cards, perhaps in future supplemental products?

Every card is made for some subset of players, some for multiple subsets. I’m fine with dedicating a card here or there specifically for a particular format if it’s popular enough. Usually the place for those is supplemental products that are already aimed at certain subsets of the audience.

Format-Focused Cards

New 15 May 2012 Asked by wobbles 1 Comments

Are cards that don't do much/anything outside of casual multiplayer formats good for the game? Like Command Tower.

Are cards that don’t do much outside of (named format that people enjoy playing) good for the game? Yes. We try whenever possible to make cards have multiple uses but it’s okay some of the time to have cards focused (well hopefully) on one purpose.
