Trivia About Devotion Mechanic

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by junejulyaugustdecember 7 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my birthday recently :) do you have any fun trivia about the Devotion mechanic?

The devotion mechanic was the redoing of chroma, an ability that first appeared (unnamed) in Future Sight and then (named) in Eventide. Aaron Forsythe originally pitched chroma on a single card in Future Sight, but I held it back because I thought it was a whole mechanic. We had high hopes for chroma, but the audience wasn’t too excited by it. Then when we were making original Theros, we needed a mechanic showing a connection to the Gods, and design team member Zac Hill pitched bring back chroma. We cleaned it up (now only caring about the mana cost of permanents on the battlefield) and renamed it, and it went on to be a beloved mechanic. It goes to show how much execution of a mechanic matters. Happy Birthday!

Marvel Design Excitement

New 22 May 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 20 Comments

Do you have a number one with a bullet character you were most excited to design for Marvel? And can you pin it to tell us one day?

I’ll share this. When we were first pitching to Marvel, Aaron Forsythe came to me to design a bunch of cards to use in the pitch. He told me to mostly use high profile characters, but one should be a deep cut (to average Marvel fans, not to hard core fans). I chose one of my favorite characters and designed a super fun card. Later when I was leading the vision design of a Marvel set, I put that creature in. I believe it won the rare poll and is still in the file, pretty close to my original design (although numbers might have been tweaked). When the card comes out, I’ll identify it.

Bloomburrow's Origin

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by drsnap23 63 Comments

Did you have a hard time convincing people for making Bloomburrow, or was it easy ?

Bloomburrow wasn’t my idea. It was Aaron Forsythe’s, I believe. When we get closer to it, I’ll explain what I tried to convince people about it and was unable to.

Sheldon Menery Anecdotes

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 167 Comments

Do you happen to have any anecdotes about Sheldon Menery you could share?

I first met Sheldon when he and I were both judges on the Pro Tour. My memory of our first meeting is he was assigned to help me in the Feature Match area. He walks up and says, “I’m Sheldon. Tell me what you want me to do.”I last saw Sheldon at Magic Con Philadelphia. R&D (Aaron Forsythe, Dave Humpherys, Mike Turian) was doing a signing and Sheldon came to do a signing at the table next to us. I remember watching how much joy he got from interacting with the public. In between those two events, which were over twenty-five years apart, I interacted many, many times with Sheldon. He was a person of great passion, who cared a great deal about how what he did impacted those around him. Magic lost a giant ally today, and he will be greatly missed.

first time invoking birthday trivia!! mirrodin/darksteel/fifth dawn is my favourite block :] got any fun facts?

We brought Aaron Forsythe onto the Fifth Dawn design team to write an article about the process. (At the time he was editing the website.) He did so well, we brought him into R&D. Happy Birthday!

Lorwyn Set Trivia

New 16 May 2023 Asked by dubbzious-blog 28 Comments

Hey Mark,I'm a week late on my birthday question, but I would love to hear any trivia tidbits on the set that came out when I first started, Lorwyn!

Lorwyn was Aaron Forsythe’s first large set lead design. He tried for most of the design to get a treasure mechanic in the set. It ended up becoming hideaway.Happy Belated Birthday!

Standard Rotation Change

I am not at Magicon Minneapolis, what is the reasoning for changing standard to a 3 year rotation? All I know is it is happening and not the thought behind it.

Here’s the article written by Aaron Forsythe: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/revitalizing-standard

Fifth Dawn Trivia

New 23 Apr 2023 Asked by escapingburger 42 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday this week! I'm wondering if you have any trivia about Fifth Dawn or the Sunburst mechanic. It was one of the last sets I played before drifting away from Magic for many years, but I still have fond memories of trying to make a five-color Sunburst deck work back then. Thanks!

Sunburst was the brainchild of Aaron Forsythe. He was on the Fifth Dawn team as a reporter to be able to write about the experience. He was so good, we hired him into R&D. He also designed scry in the same team. Happy Birthday!

Trivia on Favorite Cards

New 19 May 2022 Asked by smtmtg 39 Comments

Hey, Mark! It's my birthday today, can I request a trivia in my favorite card, Derranged Hermit (and Chatterfang, Squirrel general if you feel like it)? Also can you give me hopes that we will see a reprint of Deep Forest Hermit with art by Kev Walker? Thanks!

I’d been trying to get more Squirrels in the game, but multiple times had a card I designed making Squirrels get turned into other animals when the card got concepted. But by a twist of fate, I ended up being the person doing the card concepting for Urza’s Legacy, so I was able to make sure it made Squirrels. Deranged Hermit would go on to be the card that got Aaron Forsythe into the US National team and ultimately a World Team Champion. Happy Birthday!

Final Say in Card Design

New 12 Dec 2021 Asked by mtgdawn 29 Comments

Who gets the final word on a card design: you, Council of Color, or Aaron Forsythe?

The set designer has the most final say, but there are many groups that have to interact with which includes play design, editing, the Council of Colors, the Rules Manager, digital, organized play, and upper management (including Aaron).

Kamigawa ND Mechanics Confusion

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by mois113 102 Comments

Mark, on the product page of Kamigawa ND it say "All new mechanics". Can we take this literally? There won't be any mechanics that have been featured in the old block (except evergreens)?

On the stream Aaron Forsythe said the set had “all-new mechanics” (meaning some of the mechanics have never been seen before). Some heard that as “all new mechanics” (meaning all the mechanics are new and none returning). It’s the former “all-new mechanics” and not the latter “all new mechanics”. Ah, the spoken language. : )

Scry Keyword Trivia

New 23 Jul 2021 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 42 Comments

Maro I turned 32 yesterday! I would really like to hear some trivia on my favourite keyword, Scry.

Scry was designed by Aaron Forsythe (in Fifth Dawn - his first design team), because he wanted a good smoothing mechanic. We later made it evergreen because it was so good at smoothing. Happy Birthday!

Feedback on Dungeon Tales

New 21 Jul 2021 Asked by natew000 28 Comments

Re: Dungeon Tales Part 1: I always enjoy the swing stories for sets. For this one in particular, where you weren’t on the team, I think some of the charm of the stories was lost. Also, the number of cards covered was fewer than usual since you went so deep on the different iterations of each one.For sets where you don’t have much direct connection to the design stories, do you think it would be beneficial to have someone else collaborate on the article? For example, I loved how you brought Aaron Forsythe in for the MH2 Odds & Ends articles. Thanks!

I bring in people where I can, but it’s my job not theirs to write the articles. Every set gets articles even if I didn’t work on them. I went deep on iterations because some players really enjoy that and it’s something I could do even though I didn’t work on the set.

Will try my best.I do want to stress Aaron Forsythe is responsible for most of the squirrel goodness in MH2. My design of Deranged Hermit years ago has paid off. : )Go Aaron! - 🐿

Defending Unpopular Company Choices

New 02 Oct 2020 Asked by crossingpaths 122 Comments

Mark - I understand that you and others at WotC sometimes have to defend unpopular choices. I get it. But the gaslighting on display from Forsythe and Heggen yesterday (and to a lesser extent, your "Some Answers" post) was nothing short of astounding. Really really disappointed in what I saw. Defending company decisions is one thing. But thumbing your nose to community backlash and essentially saying "no, you guys are all wrong" is something else entirely. This is not how you put out a fire.

I, in no way, said that players shouldn’t feel how they’re feeling. I haven’t demeaned a single person for holding an opinion. I’m getting questions about why we did things and I’m trying my best to explain the reasoning behind it. I’m not saying you have to like or agree with the reasoning. I’m simply trying to answer people’s questions in as frank and straighward a manner as I can. That’s what I do on this blog.

Birds vs Bees Trivia

New 21 Jun 2019 Asked by creaky-jiki 29 Comments

Hey Mark! First I want to Thank you for all that you do, I know you are a constantly busy guy. Second I had asked some birthday trivia recently, and I I just wanted to try it again; Do you have any trivia on Aaron Forsythe’s Bird’s vs Bee’s Decks? I heard he made them just for you. Thank you Mark!

Aaron first made the decks to spellsling with at an event he and I were going to. I think he was messing with me because of my dislike of how bees have been responsible for a number of green color pie breaks.Happy Birthday!

Unstable and Steamflogger Story

New 08 Jun 2019 Asked by junderland 44 Comments

You may have already answered this but I would like to know story of unstable and steamflogger boss. Mainly did you make the set/card when futuresight came out? I’d love to hear more about unstable, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had while playing magic!

Steamflogger Boss went through a bunch of changes in design, so I had a hand it its design. The joke was its rules text used words you’d never heard, so it wasn’t clear what it did. For a while it “erected Monuments”. Aaron Forsythe then let it out of the bag that the rules text was a joke and we had no intention of ever doing Contraotions. Well, that cemented the public’s desire for it and I eventually promised I would find a way to make it work. Unstable had this “mad scientist” vibe and I realized that it was the right place for Contraptions.

I saw “Avengers: Endgsme” Thursday night with Aaron Forsythe and loved it!
