Strip Mine

Demolition Field Analysis

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by siamkor 31 Comments

Isn't Demolition Field a pretty fair and fixed Strip Mine, and a useful safety valve to have in Standard in case a land turns out too powerful?

Yeah, it’s a tweak of Ghost Quarter which was what I consider my proper “fix” for Strip Mine.

Land Destruction Imbalance

New 16 Feb 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 89 Comments

What do you consider broken about Strip Mine and Wasteland and such? 1 land for 1 land seems balanced enough to me.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. They’re not. Not remotely close.

Designing Dust Bowl

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by niuttuc 29 Comments

Was Dust Bowl also an attempt to fix Strip Mine after Wasteland? Or just an unrelated design that used some of the same elements?

No, it was another of my lovely “fixes”.

Fixing Broken Cards

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by dolbuzalo 41 Comments

Are there any broken cards that you’ve printed multiple attempts at fixing?

I made many “fixed” versions of Strip Mine that went on to also be broken (Wasteland being the most famous). In retrospect, I shouldn’t have made any. Okay maybe Ghost Quarter.

Favorite Card Fix

What's your favorite card that you've made that's a "fix" for an older one?

Probably Ghost Quarter. It took me a while to fix “Strip Mine”, but I feel I did it:

Land Destruction Discussion

New 04 Jan 2023 Asked by nutsofoden 44 Comments

"I think part of playing Magic is experiencing what other players like because that’s what they choose to play. I consider that a feature, not a bug." This being said, can we bring back efficient Land Destruction, (Stone Rain/Strip Mine) and Mass Land Destruction (ravages of war/armageddon) so I can properly feature something I love in Magic? also I know this sounds sarcastic, but I assure its not, I love LD as an archetype and want it to be supported. 4 is to much for a single target LD spell

The problem is what you love (when pushed) doesn’t let other people play the game.

Sacred Rite of Birthday Trivia

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by ryandimiragent 40 Comments

I invoke the Sacred Rite of Birthday Trivia.Given that the upcoming set I’m most hyped about is the Brothers’ War, could I have some trivia about something from that era of Magic?

All but three cards in Antiquities (Strip Mine, Urza’s Mine and Urza’s Tower, all lands which tap for colorless) have the word “artifact” appear somewhere on the card. I’m pretty confident that is the highest percentage of a single word appearing on cards in a set.Happy Birthday!

Land Destruction Effects Conundrum

New 12 Feb 2022 Asked by ruhruhrandy 38 Comments

Why does Wizards continue to print land destruction effects? I can pinpoint the exact least amount of fun I’ve ever had playing Magic in 17 years and the majority of them are playing against land destruction.

We’ve weakened it a lot since the early years. I’m looking at you Sinkhole and Strip Mine.

Strip Mine and Wasteland Query

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by superfantasticpiratecollection 45 Comments

Do you consider Strip Mine and Wasteland colour pie "breaks" because they give every colour access to cheap LD (which is only in red/green and sometimes black's slice)

I do.

Queries on Urzatron Lands

New 15 May 2021 Asked by evileyeball 57 Comments

Hey Mark it's my birthday can you tell me something about the Urzatron lands or about Urza's factory. Also I was curious if the rules could support generic or colourless phyrexian mana

Urza’s Mine, Urza’s Tower and Strip Mine are the only three cards from the Antiquities set where the word “artifact” doesn’t appear anywhere on the card. Urza’s Power-Plant references it in flavor text. The rules can support generic or colorless Phyrexian mana, but Phyrexian mana in general is tricky from a play design concern. Happy Birthday!

Strip Mine vs Wasteland

New 21 Dec 2016 Asked by aazadan 27 Comments

Strip Mine vs Wasteland: I suppose that what I meant was that Strip Mine has a much simpler design, it's just a very clean card (even if a bit powerful). Wasteland on the other hand, is a narrower card and creates additional deck building considerations. Basically, it adds several decisions to the game in deck building, fetching, and land sequencing, but sometimes the better design is more simplistic with fewer, yet still impactful choices.

Having less restrictions does not inherently make a card more elegant.“Win the game” is not an elegant design.

Elegant Card Design

New 21 Dec 2016 Asked by aazadan 22 Comments

What card do you think has the more elegant design? Strip Mine or Wasteland?

I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking. More games where both people get to actually play spells happens with Wasteland. Game designwise, that’s pretty important. I’m not sure what part of elegant you care about. If you mean better gameplay - Wasteland.

OGW Limited Game Design

New 22 Dec 2015 Asked by derplingvonderp 31 Comments

The limited games with OGW where one player has Expedition Strip Mine (or Wasteland) will be absolutely miserable for the other player. How was the process of giving it the green light?

Limited games with Expeditions Strip Mine are very infrequent.

Land Destruction Views

1995 Mark: I think Strip Mine is pretty unfun. I have an interesting idea for a weaker version.

Strip Mine Text Change

New 27 Apr 2014 Asked by jtchicken 13 Comments

Why was the flavor text on Strip Mine changed from Dominia to Dominaria, was this just a ret-con flavor-wise?

Dominia was an old name for the multiverse. We really don’t use it any more and I assume Creative thought the person using it originally confused Dominia (the multiverse) with Dominaria (the plane) so they corrected it. That’s my best guess. Feel free to ask Doug.

Multiple Art Variance

New 04 Mar 2014 Asked by jaktipe 18 Comments

Multiple arts: - Strip mine has different pics on its different versions but they are all clearly Strip Mine. You could make sure that artists know the cards are to look very similar and bring back variable arts.

What’s the point if having different arts if the artist has to make them all look basically the same?

Memorable Match Anecdote

New 23 Nov 2013 Asked by returnoftherat-deactivated20211 62 Comments

Can you tell us the story of Scott Johns/Tom Guevin Type I semi-final game at PT Dallas?

From my column “Loose Ends”: In the early days of the Pro Tour, Wizards would sponsor big money side events. At PT Dallas, the side event was a Type 1 tournament with a $40,000 purse. One of the two semi-finals was between Scott Johns (yes, our illustrious editor) and Tom Guevin. Both had made a name for themselves on the Pro Tour. Scott had three back-to-back top 8’s while Tom had come in second at the very first PT Los Angeles. It was the third game of the semi-final match (in a best two out three match). Tom had won the coin flip and chose to play first. He played a land. Use the land to play a Sol Ring. He then played a Mox and a Black Lotus. Next he played a Zuran Orb. He then sacrificed the Lotus for three white mana. He used two of it to play Balance. In response, he sacrificed his land to his Orb to gain 2 life. With only two cards left in Tom’s hand, Scott was forced to discard five cards. “I’m really sorry,” Tom said to Scott (he didn’t sound very sorry), “Sometimes Type I is really stupid.” Scott stared intently at his cards. Then after a minute of thought, Scott discarded his first card. It was aGuerilla Tactics. As this was a forced discard, Guerilla Tactics dealt 4 damage to Tom. Scott then discarded his second card. Another Guerilla Tactics. Four more damage. Then Scott discarded his third card. Yet another Guerilla Tactics. Another four damage. This left Tom at 10 life. After going down to two cards, Scott takes his turn and plays a Tropical Island and then casts Ancestral Recall. With the Ancestral Recall Scott draws a Mox Ruby and a Gorilla Shaman. He plays the Shaman. Tom draws something irrelevant. On Scott’s next turn, he drops a Strip Mine and uses the Gorilla Shaman to destroy the Mox and Sol Ring. At the end of his turn, Scott looks at Tom and says, “You’re right. It can be pretty stupid.”

Mana Production Ethics

New 24 Oct 2013 Asked by tptn937-blog-blog 14 Comments

Since you believe the mana system is one of the best parts about magic, and it's okay to accelerate mana production, why is it not okay to inhibit your opponents production? People complain all the time about getting mana screwed and they're told to eat their vitamins because it's good for them. Why do you make the concession that Wasteland, Strip Mine, Armageddon, Stasis, Winter Orb aren't okay? I understand some of these effects are too strong, but cards like Realmrazer seem too weak....

Mana screw is not the desired part of the mana system. It’s a by-product. We want there to be flux game to game with mana but we want players to be able to eventually play their spells. Land destruction, at least cheap land destruction, stops this from happening.

Land Destruction View

New 02 Aug 2013 Asked by keith-cancel 7 Comments

What is your view on players who like efficient land destruction? wasteland, strip mine, sinkhole, pillage ect..

They are a minority. What we’ve learned over the years is that deck strategies that revolve around one player doing something such that the other player never gets to play cards are very unpopular.
