Ramp Control Issues

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 65 Comments

I think the point in the land destruction conversation that you’re missing, and that commander players seem to be trying to get you to recognise, is that *ramp* is too hard to answer. Inefficient land removal doesn’t help. Land removal is inefficient to stop non-games where you stone rain your opponent’s only island. I remember those days. I’m glad they’re gone. But I don’t think anyone wants those days back. I think what people want is a way to effectively and efficiently answer someone who has six basic lands on turn 3.White kind of has an answer in that it ramps if anyone has ramped more than them, but maybe it and others can punish those who have jumped too far ahead too quickly. Perhaps more efficient land destruction would be okay if the opponent chose which land gets destroyed and only if they have a lot of lands. A sacrificing stone rain like that could probably cost 3 and be fine to help out against ramp decks since the only way someone could have a lot of lands and this be eligible to be hit by it by turn 3 is if they’ve been ramping like crazy.

Thanks for better spelling out the issue. It’s a tough window to hit, but we can look at it. And odds are, have been looking at it. I’m much more focused on the front-end, large structural issues and this is a much crunchier individual card design issue, but we have a casual play design team that focuses on this kind of stuff.

Perspective on Land Destruction

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by lavilledieu 30 Comments

Each time land destruction becomes the topic, you put this playstyle away as unfun because people don't get to play the game. Yet we get powerful counterspells and powerful tax effects (including ward). In standard, I've had games on the draw where I did nothing because of Thalia followed by Anointed Peackeeper or Elite Spellbinder. Thalia is basically like -1 land if you wanted to play one noncreature, worse if you wanted to play more. It gets even worse: Thalia or the other creatures mentioned do win games, unlike a Stone Rain or similar. Now, I do share the belief we don't need more stone rains, it's too much all eggs in one basket, but cards like Waking the Trolls did a step in the good direction of being interesting and disruptive without being oppressive.
So my take is: people overestimate land destruction, don't let that stop you, as there is a lot of design space here.

We are very careful with counterspells, discard, and taxing for the very reasons you state. Long ago there existed a “permissions deck” which was basically nothing but counterspells and countered almost every spell. We don’t allow that (or a discard deck that makes you discard every spell) anymore.

Request: More Land Destruction

New 29 May 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 27 Comments

"Which is a good segue to gather some thoughts from all you Question Marks? How do you feel about the current volume and strength of counterspells?" I like the amount and variety of counterspells, but some of us do want more land destruction. It doesn't have to be in a premier set, and we get that you won't make another Stone Rain. Green and black haven't had any for a long time, and red gets mostly unplayable stuff when we do get it.

I hear the request.

Land Destruction Discussion

New 04 Jan 2023 Asked by nutsofoden 44 Comments

"I think part of playing Magic is experiencing what other players like because that’s what they choose to play. I consider that a feature, not a bug." This being said, can we bring back efficient Land Destruction, (Stone Rain/Strip Mine) and Mass Land Destruction (ravages of war/armageddon) so I can properly feature something I love in Magic? also I know this sounds sarcastic, but I assure its not, I love LD as an archetype and want it to be supported. 4 is to much for a single target LD spell

The problem is what you love (when pushed) doesn’t let other people play the game.

Evolving Wilds Reprint Trivia

New 10 Sep 2021 Asked by yunasjet 78 Comments

Fun fact - with the reprint in Midnight Hunt, Evolving Wilds is now the card (that isn't a basic land) with the most unique arts! It used to be tied with Counterspell and Stone Rain

Card with Most Artworks

New 08 Sep 2021 Asked by lunis-j 87 Comments

I know this probably isn't your area of expertise, but do you know which magic card has the largest amount of different artworks between its various printings?

I believe the answer is Mountain. The basic lands are far in first and Mountain showed up in one set that the others didn’t (Arabian Nights). As for cards other than basic lands, I’m not sure. Stone Rain, Giant Growth, Mind Rot - something we’ve reprinted a lot.Does anyone know the non-Mountain answer?

Land Destruction Cards' Return

New 02 Feb 2021 Asked by goldencrustacean 53 Comments

Earlier you said, (in regards to counterspells) that even though some players may find the playsyle unfun, there is a subset of players that enjoy it, and as such, there are still counterspells in blue. Does this mean strong land destruction cards like stone rain and Armageddon can come back if we enjoy playing them?

Whether or not there is a big enough audience determines whether we make certain effects. What leads to the best game play determines how strong we make them.

Possibility of 3-Mana Land Destruction

Could we get 3-mana land destruction of the Stone Rain variety if it costs BRG to cast?

Unlikely.

Issue with Stone Rain

New 15 Aug 2020 Asked by tbjanowski 21 Comments

Is the problem with Stone Rain that its cost is too agressive or splashable? And would a Stone Rain varient that cost tripple red mana be acceptable in Standard?

The issue is not wanting it cast on turn three. Limiting it to monored decks doesn’t address that issue.

Stone Rain Cost

New 15 Dec 2019 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 31 Comments

If you made Stone Rain today, keeping it at its 3 CMC cost, would it still be Red?would it still be 2R?

Red is still primary in land destruction. We don’t believe three mana is the correct power level, so if forced to be 3 converted mana cost, I guess we’d cost it at RRR.

Land Destruction Debate

New 28 Apr 2018 Asked by djunknown0 64 Comments

The request to have Stone Rain back made me think. It’s pretty common to see a land destruction spell in standard sets for 4 CMC. Sometimes there’s a tacked on effect, but regardless, the cards are rarely played in limited. If the fans of land destruction aren’t happy with this effect at 4, who are the cards for? Is it one of those “there need to be bad cards for learning” situations?

Data from Magic Online, which already leans towards more enfranchised players, has taught me that every card will get played by someone. Who would ever play *that* card? Apparently, a lot of players.

Are Stone Rain esque cards gone for good, or simply something that would be done very infrequently?

We still make land destruction.

Land Destruction Concerns

New 28 May 2016 Asked by kvanever 30 Comments

Does Anguished Unmaking not target lands because of power concerns or fun concerns? I guess I'm asking if three life is enough downside to allow Stone Rain effects at three mana in Standard.

Fun concerns. We do not like efficient & flexible tournament-viable land destruction.

Stone Rain Environment

Could you foresee creating an environment that would want stone rain?

A Stone Rain-like effect? Yes. Actual Stone Rain? No.

Atog Anagram Revelation

can i please have late birthday trivia on stone rain? If you don't have any, I would also welcome anything about the atogs.

Atog is an anagram of the word “goat” because like a goat, they’ll eat most things. Happy Belated Birthday!

Land Destruction Policy

New 22 Sep 2014 Asked by errantaxiom 31 Comments

How far away is R&D moving from strong land destruction? Might we see a format that has one good land destruction spell like we usually get one good counterspell, or is Stone Rain gone forever?

The problem is all it takes is one strong land destruction spell to ruin a lot of games.

Land Destruction Debate

New 25 Mar 2014 Asked by l0cke17 41 Comments

I really don't believe that the majority of players hate Land Destruction. Since there are so many 1-2 cmc mana-accelerants why isn't there be a similar number of 2-3 cmc mana destruction spells to keep that in check? Stone Rain and Sinkhole just provide a crucial foil to those cards, and should be much more common. Or, better yet, just print cheaper non-basic LD cards, and only punish the greedy tournament decks, and let the casuals at the kitchen table ignore it since they use mostly basics.

The reason I bring up data is to try and be as transparent as I can about our motivations. If we honestly believed land destruction was something the majority of players enjoyed, we’d have more of it and at a higher power level. There is no reason for us to act against the interest of the majority of the players.

Cost of Combined Spells

New 12 Feb 2014 Asked by keith-cancel 8 Comments

Combine Lighting bolt and stone rain and try to keep cmc at 3 or less or would you have to increase the cost for such a card?

We’re currently not doing Stone Rain at three mana so Stone Rain + probably isn’t going to happen.
