Snapcaster Mage

Character Artwork Gender

New 03 Apr 2024 Asked by lettherebeplastic-blog 50 Comments

Please print Snapcaster mage and scion of oona with female artwork. Thank you!

Due to card titles in certain foreign languages, nowadays we tend to keep the gender the same on reprints.

Artwork Gender Issues

Please reprint Snapcaster mage and scion of oona with female artwork. Thank you so much.

There’s a foreign language issue we have to deal with. Certain languages have gendered elements which differ depending on whether the art portrays a male or female creature. This keeps us (mostly) having new art match the same gender as the original art.

Snapcaster Mage for Standard Query

Not a developer, but do you think Snapcaster Mage is too powerful for Standard?

Yes.

Printing Cards without Reminder Text

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by hightidespiral 95 Comments

May I request that (frequently) reprinted cards with reminder text may be reprinted from time to time without reminder text if feasible (e.g. in product aimed at more enfranchised players)? For example, Deceiver Exarch has been reprinted multiple times and Flash (an evergreen mechanic) had reminder text every time. Or Snapcaster Mage has been reprinted in 2 masters sets with reminder text for a well known mechanic (box topper version aside). IMO cards without reminder text are more aesthetic, I’d personally love to see them more often in masters-style products

How do others feel about reminder text? Would you like versions without it?

No.

Pioneer Card Reprints

New 24 Dec 2019 Asked by coatsville 45 Comments

Is R&D actively looking to add good, safe build around reprints like Restoration Angel, Ezuri Renegade Leader, Elvish Archdruid, and maybe even Snapcaster mage to add to the Pioneer card pool? I love modern and WANT to love Pioneer, but it feels so watered down and missing some fun and powerful (yet not broken) cards like the ones above. A) are you actively looking for opportunities to reprint? B) are they more likely to happen in a core set (doesn’t care about a card’s plane) or return sets?

We’ll keep making cool new cards and some of them will be build-arounds, but a format half the size of another format will definitionally be of a weaker power level.

Adventure Mechanic Logic

New 01 Oct 2019 Asked by goat-shield 26 Comments

Mark, regarding Adventures, did they get the treatment that they're only instant/sorcery as they're cast because of things like Snapcaster Mage?

The Adventures have to be instants or sorceries as they can’t end up on the battlefield because the creature has to be exiled.

Future Impact Uncertain

New 07 Sep 2019 Asked by rekian 48 Comments

Will Throne of Eldraine feature a game-changing and deeply impactul card in the long run? Eg. Snapcaster Mage, Skullclamp, Cryptic Command, Force of Will... Just cards that stand the test of time and become all-time most widely played and rememered cards.

Only time will tell.

Adventures with Snapcaster

New 06 Sep 2019 Asked by obsolete-pixel 23 Comments

How do adventures work with cards like Snapcaster Mage or Past in Flames? Can I Snap Bring to Life from the Animating Faerie if it's in my graveyard? If I do, does it get exiled as a result of the adventure or does it get exiled because of Snapcaster (in essence, could I cast the creature half from exile?) Similarly, for cards that care about multiple card types in the graveyard (Tarmogoyf), does the card count as a creature AND a sorcery? Thanks!

It’s just a creature card in your graveyard.

Color Identity Balance

New 20 Dec 2018 Asked by noblecuriosity 37 Comments

Blue excelling at many low as-fan things vs. other colors excelling at a few high as-fan things means blue's splashy (set-selling) MEMORABLE cards get to be more varied and unique. Ex. All Modern Masters mythics: U: Keiga, Snapcaster Mage, Temporal Manipulation, Tezzeret the Seeker, Vendilion Clique. 5 radically different effects, 2 blue-exclusive. Vs. R: Bonfire of the Damned, Comet storm, Kiki-Jiki, Past in Flames, Ryusei; 3/5 are damage boardwipes, the other 2 could be bends in U. See issue?

I’ve talked plenty about how Snapcaster is pushing more towards red and Vendilion Click is a black card masquerading as a blue card (aka a heavy bend). Things are more balanced than they seem.

Standard Set Power Levels

New 01 Jul 2018 Asked by rekian 51 Comments

Hey Mark! I believe you act very carefully when releasing a Standard-legal set in order not to have a substantial power creep (i.e. cards like Arena Rector in Battlebond) but after all it’s a format that rotates every two years so can’t you be less strict from time to time? Or a little bit more often than you usually do (i.e. Snapcaster Mage 7 years ago)?

If we’ve made any mistakes in the last few years, I don’t think it’s an unwillingness to put strong cards in Standard. : )

Female Wizard Art Request

New 25 Mar 2018 Asked by lettherebeplastic-blog 88 Comments

I recently Introduced the Harry Potter book series to my daughter. She loves the strong female character, Hermione, so much that she asked me to build her a modern human wizard deck whereby the illustration of all her creature cards must be female human wizard. That's when I realized my favorite human wizard cards (the good ones) such as Snapcaster Mage, Stormchaser Mage and Delver of Secrets are men. Appreciate if Wizards could reprint these cards with illustrations that depict female. Thanks:)

The foreign translations force us to lock down genders to cards (although oddly there is a female version of Meddling Mage). Dominaria should hopefully help you with the deck.

Red Snapcaster Perspective

Re: Red Snapcaster Mage -- Dire Fleet Daredevil (from RIX) is Snapcaster Mage except he casts from your opponent's graveyard instead of your own.

A good point.

Red Snapcaster Possibility

New 15 Mar 2018 Asked by ultwarrior 46 Comments

Listening to your podcasts on the Invitational, you said you feel Snapcaster Mage would be more of a red card than a blue one if R&D had designed it. Have you ever tried putting a red Snapcaster Mage into a set, or has that ship sailed with the printing of the thematically-similar Dualcaster Mage instead?

We might do a red tweak one day.

Grand Calcutron Rules

New 20 Dec 2017 Asked by benchariot 29 Comments

suppose i have The Grand Calcutron out and i cast the first card in my program, Snapcaster Mage. TGC says "players can only play the first card of their program," does this mean the only card in my program that i can play is the 1st card, or does it mean i can't play any cards at all unless they're the 1st card of my program? in other words, can i flash something back with snapcaster?

If you play a card out of your hand, it has to be the first card in the program. If you cast it from anywhere else, you can cast it whenever.

Ability Functionality Query

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by neotrup 13 Comments

Wait, so could I give Modular Monstrosity Flashback or Replicate (Snapcaster Mage and Djinn Illuminatus respectively)? If I do, would those abilities actually do anything? I'm guessing no.

No, they would not.

Snapcaster Rarity Shift

New 28 Feb 2017 Asked by bolas-our-lord-and-savior-deact 81 Comments

Care to explain the snapcaster rarityshift?

Products like Masters always have some rarity shifting. Snapcaster Mage is an exciting card with a unique effect that easily could have been mythic rare in its original printing. I often talk about how mythic rares need “the potential for awesomeness” and Snapcaster Mage definitely meets that criteria. Finally, we need to spread exciting cards across all the rarities and part of the shift was making sure mythic rare had its share of splash. With the enemy fetch lands and Damnation, rare was already high in excitement.

Card Reprintability Factors

New 12 Jan 2017 Asked by markensencjusz 29 Comments

Do you ever consider replrintability as a factor when designing/developing cards? What I mean by that is for example Lightning bolt can be theoreticaly reprinted anywhere, while for a Snapcaster Mage you need flashback to be a thing in the set. There is also the flavor perspective i doubt other planes have Seachrome Coasts so that is Mirrodin-only.

We do think about reprintability but more for basic effects that can go in many different sets.
