Unique Buy-a-box Cards

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by gimme-more-maro 13 Comments

Thank you for bringing back unique buy-a-box cards! Nexus of Fate be damned, I really do enjoy the concept and Flubs is probably the most perfect execution of it.

Glad you like it.

Use of Extra Turn Cards

New 10 Nov 2021 Asked by cleverconvict 64 Comments

Considering that Nexus of Fate had to be banned and Alrund's Epiphany has warped Standard, why is Set Design still creating Extra Turn cards? Why haven't Time Walks followed Armageddon and random discard effects into the depths of "too unfun for Standard"?

Because players mostly enjoy extra turn effects and dislike destroy all lands and random discard effects. Yes, players dislike broken cards, but that doesn’t mean they necessarily dislike the part of the game that it’s using.

Concerns Over Limited Availability

New 04 Oct 2020 Asked by reamaday 332 Comments

Focusing on the small differences between Nalathni dragon, nexus of fate, and the secret lair feels like a deliberate splitting of hairs and intentionally ignoring the commonalities which is what is upsetting players: once the window of opportunity to get these cards has passed, it’s going to be incredibly hard to get them. This response feels like the communities concerns are being ignored which makes us more upset and feeling overall gaslit. It doesn’t inspire confidence.

Here’s my problem. My job is about splitting hairs. Chroma was a failed mechanic and Devotion was a hit. The difference between something working and something not can often be tiny executions. I try on this blog to let you see my designer persona which does a lot of nit-picking, but you bring a good point that when the audience is upset, that’s not the persona you need and I apologize for that. You guys are hurting and what you need from me is an acknowledgement of that hurt. You need sympathetic Mark and not designer Mark. One of the by-products of being a face of Magic is I’m a lightning rod for feedback. There’s good and bad to that, but it does mean that I have a unique insight into what is upsetting you all. I just wrote a write-up to share with my bosses to explain what I’ve learned, and I want to thank you all for feeling comfortable enough with me to share your issues. So, I’m sorry so many of you are hurting right now. I’ll stop acting like designer Mark on this topic. It’s just causing more pain and that’s the last thing I want.

Trust Issue Addressal Request

New 04 Oct 2020 Asked by badatcommander 186 Comments

Part of what's going on here is that for a lot of players, the TWD SL seriously damaged our trust in WotC to do what's best for the game. Your part of that is that on 9/16 you said re BAB Promos "We were listening to feedback from the players. The mechanically unique Buy-a-Box cards upset a lot of people." You knew that TWD was coming, and because of that I have lost a lot of trust in you specifically. If you want to earn that trust back, you might start by explaining that post.

I understand how the players can clump Nalathni Dragon and Nexus of Fate and Rick all in the same category, but I need to stress that they were each very different things. Nalathni Dragon required you to travel to Atlanta and buy ticket to a convention that had nothing directly to do with Magic. Nexus of Fate required you to buy a box of draft boosters from your local game store while supplies last, Rick requires you ordering a Magic product online during a certain time period. The first one has nothing to do with Magic while the second two were directly tied to a Magic product. The first and second required you to go to a physical place while the third did not. The first and second were “while supplies last” while the third is print to demand. Each is different, so we have to treat it differently. There is a world where unique Buy-a-Boxes cards are problematic where a direct to sale product is not. Two weeks ago I said “we tried thing X and you communicated that you didn’t like thing X”. Now we’re trying thing Y. Yes, there are similarities, but there are also numerous differences. Maybe you’ll like thing Y. That’s why we’re trying it.I understand you might not like thing Y, but me saying you didn’t like thing X is not me lying about thing Y.

Concerns about Secret Lair

New 28 Sep 2020 Asked by mdbryan84 159 Comments

I just want to express my opinion that this secret lair is a very very dangerous slope to go down. Have you guys not learned from Nalthni Dragon/Nexus of fate? Also these are essentially being printed directly to the reserved list since WOTC won’t own the licensing forever, which is something stated wouldn’t happen.

While the Secret Lair is the one chance to get the Walking Dead versions of these cards, we have the ability to print the Magic versions of these cards in future products. So, let’s say Negan becomes a popular Commander, we can print the Magic version (same card mechanically, but with a Magic name and art) in any number of future products. This is not a case of us being unable to make more of a popularly played card.

Reprinting Buy-a-Box Cards

New 04 Apr 2020 Asked by abrohm 32 Comments

What's the policy on reprinting BAB cards? Is there any chance we'll see the non-godzilla version of zilothra years down the road when ikoria is out of print? What about reprinting cards like nexus of fate?

We are totally allowed to reprint Buy-a-Box cards.

Promotional Card Criteria

New 21 Aug 2019 Asked by thegreatfox002 20 Comments

On the storm scale, you once rated mechanically unique standard legal promotional cards a 12. Since Nexus of Fate exists, when can we expect the other 12 on the storm scale, Planeswalkers with Banding?

That’s not a promotional card. It’s associated with the sale of a Magic product. A promotional card, by definition, is not associated with the sale of a product.

Buy-a-Box Controversy

New 09 Apr 2019 Asked by plipsservers-blog 59 Comments

Hi Mark, I genuinely hope you take the time to read and respond to this post. I am to understand that since Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge is apparently the buy-a-box promo, it will not be in packs? If so, how could WotC do this to us? Wasn't the backlash against Nexus of Fate enough to prevent a BaB like this from happening again? Very, very disappointing.

We’re being more careful with the Standard viability of our Buy-a-Box cards, but we’re not stopping making them. They’re pretty popular and have sold a lot of boxes for local game stores.

Nexus of Fate Rule

New 24 Feb 2019 Asked by simicmimic 49 Comments

Un-rules question: Does Nexus of Fate’s BO1 Arena ban mean Spike, Tournament Grinder can tutor for it?

Yes. If it’s banned or restricted in any Wizards sanctioned format, Spike can get it.

R&D Video Series

New 20 Feb 2019 Asked by nouser1000-blog 64 Comments

Sooooo, you got a new clone and he's been sorted to do R&D Tales or you're now using the banned Nexus of Fate to get time to do the videos? (or you're free from an old task and now have time for the new series)

The “R&D Tales” videos were the test for a new series of videos I (“I” can mean any of my clones) want to do. If you are interested in seeing it become a regular thing, I need to get enough positive feedback to show the people responsible for signing off in such a thing.

Arena as Test Bed

New 15 Feb 2019 Asked by captainnv 45 Comments

Mark, to what extent is Wizards really using Arena as a test bed for experimentation? The best one of one is bleeding into the Quick Draft testing in LGS, and it almost looks like Nexus of Fate banning there is designed to generate a look at what a world without it looks like before making the jump to ban it in standard.

We are treating Arena more as if it is its own format that any kind of testing bed.

Nexus of Fate Evaluation

New 11 Feb 2019 Asked by beefysham 56 Comments

Now that the dust has mostly settled, do you think that printing Nexus of Fate was a mistake?

As I said months ago, it should have exiled itself.

Extra Turn Spell Caution

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by chocolatechipmarshmallowpizza 35 Comments

Is there a reason you are so worried about extra turn creatures being abused by clone effects when normal extra turn spells are susceptible to spell copying? Also, if you don't want them to be reusable, why did you make things like Nexus of Fate?

It’s because of things like Nexus of Fate that I believe we have to be more cautious of our extra turn spells. (My normal “I’m not a play designer” caveat.)

Buy-a-Box Promos Future

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by jonathan-hecht 47 Comments

In terms of the buy abox promos. In my opinion Firesong & sunspeaker alongside The Haunt of Hightower are successes while Nexus of fate was a mistake that should not happen(and the wurm is fine just sees play in one modern deck and thats it). I believe that for future sets the promo will be better suited for janky build around legends rather than spiky competitive cards that people will need 4-ofs, its a great opportunity to make a commander with story relevance that happens to be standard legal

We were trying something new and that requires some trial and error to get right. Nexus of Fate is not where we’re targeting the Buy-a-Box promos.

Nexus of Fate Availability

New 04 Sep 2018 Asked by threetreesoup 34 Comments

Mark, my LGS is telling me that I can't get a Nexus of Fate if I buy a box. They are saying it's only available when you pre-order the set and pick up at pre-release. What's up? I thought the BAB was meant as a prize whenever you bought a box?

Each store only gets a certain number, so when that many boxes are sold, it’s out.

Buy-a-Box Power Level

New 03 Sep 2018 Asked by shadowstar91 42 Comments

As someone who loves the idea of the BaB promo being it's own unique card, my only problem with it is entirely with its power level. Firesong and Sunspeaker was a great card but wasn't competitive and that was fine, Commander and Brawl love them. Nexus of Fate on the other hand is so extremely powerful that its making the exclusivity of the BaB promos a problem instead of a reward. I would like the BaB to remain unique but I also want them to be toned down power-wise to stop this from happening.

Nexus of Fate is of a higher power level than our target with Buy-a-Box cards.

Buy-a-Box Strategy

New 02 Sep 2018 Asked by unclewiker 55 Comments

I get the delicate balance of the buy a box promotion. It's college-level economics and marketing behavioral analysis. Most of the audience won't understand, and in many ways that's okay. My question: how many hours have been spent trying to pick the perfect card for the promotion? And was Nexus designed for the promotion or selected at a later time?

We have a certain target power level we try to hit with Buy-a-Box cards. Nexus of Fate ending up hitting a little higher than intended. Remember that predicting power level in advance is very tricky and is not an exact science.

Set Focus in Marketing

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 38 Comments

... This is what we are telling you. Whether or not the card is standard legal doesn't matter since the BOB promo has nothing to do with the actual set.

It *is* flavored to be from the set. Nexus of Fate, for example, shows a key moment between Bolas and Ugin.

Nexus of Fate Circulation

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by majorax 31 Comments

In regards to Nexus of Fate; there is a difference between how many copies of a card are in print and how many copies of it are in circulation. If there are a million cards trapped behind your LGS's counter, then there IS a player scarcity. Not all players are able to afford an entire box - opening single packs is a much more effective way of putting cards in players' hands!

From the best that we can measure (and admittedly it varies from store to store), the vast majority of Nexus of Fate cards are in players’ hands and not the stores’.

Nexus of Fate Insight

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by persistentpeanut 30 Comments

For the Nexus of fate issue; You said that even though many players were vocal about how they were against the mechanic, it was still the “favorite” mechanic of Scars. I think it’s more that it was such a strong mechanic that so many people used it, including the people that were against it. Not because they liked the overpowered mechanic, but because it would make them win. Same goes for Nexus. Many people that are against a card not in the main set, will buy boxes because it still adds value.

Infect was neither strong in limited nor Standard. Yes, it would later become a contender in Modern, but that was years later. Players said they liked infect and, at the time, it wasn’t particularly strong - they liked it despite it being powerful. That’s a huge sign that they actually liked it for what it was.
