Correlating Animals in Bloomburrow

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by thunderweb 1 Comments

Do arcs and wedges have corresponding animals in Bloomburrow? (such as RGW Goats or BGU Hippos)

No, there was barely enough space for the ten two-color ones.

Three-Colour Combinations

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 14 Comments

So far Temur, Bant, Esper, Naya and Grixis have been previewed. Can we expect all 10 three-colour combinations in OTJ ?

No, all ten are not there.

Precon Color Distribution

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by aztecmagic 25 Comments

How do you choose color distribution when designing precons? We have so few Abzan commander precons compared to color combinations like Naya etc

We design to our set themes which dictate colors. We don’t start with “let’s make a Naya deck” and make it fit however we have to.

Naya Precons Strategy

New 19 Feb 2024 Asked by yagyuhayato 31 Comments

Hi there! I was curious if the decision to put 4 Naya identity precons in a row was intentional or if the sets just panned out that way? How are things like that decided?

Commander sets are made to match the needs of the sets they’re paired with. This is the source of repetition.

Wolves Commanders

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by talos-4 26 Comments

Hi fives for Making Voja, Jaws of the Conclave. Wolves have needed a naya commander for a long time, and Voja was a great character choice and solid design.I also love that, in the same set, we also get an amazing Tolsimir, which will slot into my Tolsimir wolf commander deck very nicely.

Glad you enjoy it.

Elves Color Identity

New 25 Dec 2023 Asked by coboney 48 Comments

Happy Holidays Mark! Since Santa is RW - what color are his elves? Are they GW, making the North Pole a RGW faction ?

His Elves are green and white, with red being the third color if they have one.

Homeward Path Distribution

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 22 Comments

Re: Homeward Path - This effect has shown up on a Red Card (Brand), a Green Card (Brooding Saurian), a White Card (The Fall of Lord Konda), a Red/Green Card (Gruul Charm), and a Green/White Card (Trostani Discordant). This implies to me that it is in all three of RGW with G being every so slightly the most common.

It’s an effect we do rarely, so the exact numbers aren’t necessarily representative of color weight. I do agree if there was a set that wanted to have it play a larger role, it would most likely be white, red, or green.

Creative Space Overlap

New 09 Nov 2023 Asked by fizzywizard 37 Comments

was there any concern about the malamet feeling too similar to naya’s nacatl — and naya/ixalan overlap in general, since they play in similar creative space?

We make a lot of worlds. There’s always bits of overlap.

If, but not necessarily soon.

Alara's Return Possibility

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by durzio 47 Comments

If/when return to Alara? It's one of my favorite planes, where my interest really picked up in magic, and I'd love a birthday fact about it! :)

If, but I hope when. It was the only design team to have five distinct mini teams (one per share). Each mini team was made up of three people. I led the Esper mini team, and was on the Bant and Naya mini teams.Happy Birthday!

Color Order Explanation

New 30 Jul 2023 Asked by woihtmmd 113 Comments

"They are in WUBRG order. Note that doesn’t mean W is always before U" Can you explain how this works? I'm confused.

Let’s start with allied color pairs. The way we do them is we start with the color and the go clockwise around the color wheel. That means they are: White/BlueBlue/BlackBlack/RedRed/GreenGreen/WhiteNote that means green and white are green/white, the order in which they are consecutive rather than the order of WUBRG. For enemy color pairs we get: White/BlackBlue/RedBlack/GreenRed/WhiteGreen/BlueIn this case two color pairs, red and white, and green and blue, are not in WUBRG order, but in the order where they are closest around the circle. This order makes it so each color is first two out of four times, and last two out of four times.Shard/arc three color trios are done the order that they appear together in the circle:White/Blue/BlackBlue/Black/RedBlack/Red/GreenRed/Green/WhiteGreen/White/BlueRed, green and white, and green, white, and blue aren’t in WUBRG order.Wedge three-color trios, are written such that the shared enemy color is in the center, with each color appearing with it as it appears when it’s written as an enemy color :White/Black/GreenBlue/Red/WhiteBlack/Green/BlueRed/White/BlackGreen/Blue/RedOnly white, black, green is in WUBRG order.Four color quartets appear in the order they appear consecutive in the color wheel: White/Blue/Black/RedBlue/Black/Red/GreenBlack/Red/Green/WhiteRed/Green/White/Blue Green/White/Blue/BlackAll but the first two aren’t in WUBRG order.Five color us in WUBRG order:White/Blue/Black/Red/Green

Power Baseline Shift

New 08 Mar 2023 Asked by flakmaniak 40 Comments

Is "power 4 or greater" the new "power 5 or greater"? As in, Naya had "power 5 or greater" as its theme, but the past decade seems to use "power 4 or greater" much more. (Or are 3, 4 and 5 all still considered reasonable numbers to check for?)

Power 4 or greater is the new default baseline.

Creature Support Futures

New 13 Feb 2023 Asked by saxor117 28 Comments

You've printed recent support for going wide with enchanted creatures in RGW (Mazzy, Truesword Paladin) and with equipped creatures in RW (Jor Kadeen, First Goldwarden) or with modified creatures in RG (Chishiro, the Shattered Blade). Will we get a legendary creature in the near future that supports going wide with modified creatures in RGW so I can run Mazzy, Jor Kadeen, and Chishiro together in a single deck? Or is that too fringe of a deck for now?

If the right set comes along…

More Wedge Commanders

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by strix-soven 36 Comments

May I request more wedge commanders? There are nearly 2x as many shard as wedge. In case you're interested: Sultai 17, Temur 15, Jeskai 19, Abzan 12, Mardu 23. Wedge total 86. Esper 34, Grixis 39, Jund 28, Naya 30, Bant 29. Shard total 160.

We do them in about equal numbers. The discrepancy comes from the fact that we used to do a lot more of the ally combinations than the enemy ones.

Mana Symbol Order

New 09 Nov 2022 Asked by notmakingablog71 83 Comments

Why do the mana symbols in some multicolored cards follow WUBRG but not others? i.e. an izzet card will have blue then red, but a golgari card has green first then black?

There is an order to every color combination: WUUBBRRGGWWBURBGRWGWWUBUBRBRGRGWGWUWBGURWBGURWBGURWUBRUBRGBRGWRGWUGWUBWUBRGThe order for each cycle has a pattern which goes around the mana circle in a particular way that is consistent for the cycle.

Gishath/Zacama Lore

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by autumn876 43 Comments

Birthday ask (my birthday was yesterday but it looks like your inbox was flooded) Could I please get some lore/trivia about gishath/zacama?

One of our goals when designing Ixalan was to make a legendary creature that spoke to the creature type of each faction. The Sun Empire was red/green/white, so it had to be a Dinosaur that cared about Dinosaurs in some way. We ended up wanting a big Dinosaur, so we tied its Dinosaur mechanic to dealing damage to the opponent. We then added three evergreen keywords, one that was primary in each color, for added value. And that is how Gishath came to be.Happy Birthday!

Reasons for Weak Reprint Inclusions

New 18 Jun 2022 Asked by jacewindu 64 Comments

I think the previous asker was wondering why an expensive reprint set would include very weak and low-price reprints like Fiery Justice at Rare. I get the need for underpowered cards at common and uncommon to balance limited, but I would think that the rare slots in a reprint set like this could have a much higher floor for power level at rare.

Forgetting power level issues, is there a better red/green/white non-creature spell for that slot?

Probably.

Jinnie Fay's Mana Cost

New 12 Apr 2022 Asked by timelyintervention 42 Comments

Hi Mark!Do you ever do "consultations" for your asks?Specifically, can you ask one of the devs to comment on the mana cost for Jinnie Fay? The r/gGg/w is a very interesting choice. It doesn't make a difference for the color identity, so I'm guessing it's to make it easier to cast in a Limited format. That, however, seems strange in a 3 color set. Thanks in advance!

It allows both red/green and green/white decks to play it as well as red/green/white decks.
