Simplifying Combat Math Proposal

New 20 Jul 2024 Asked by riptidecrab 2 Comments

Adding to the discussion about simplifying combat math, I tend not to play cards like Burrowguard Mentor ("power and toughness are each equal to the number of creatures you control") because they often end up dying after combat when my other creatures die. Have you ever considered making a similar card but with "CARDNAME'S power and toughness are each equal to the greatest number of creatures you have controlled this turn."? That would make things a little easier on my already over-taxed brain.

I think the more likely version of that would be an activated ability that gets the boost until end of turn. A static ability that has built in memory needs can also cause issues.

Change to 'Second Main Phase'

"Is Fireglass Mentor the start of a precedent to use "second main phase" instead of "postcombat main phase"?It is." Why the change?

“Postcombat main phase” is a mouthful.

It is.

Token Method Standard

New 27 May 2024 Asked by sombramainexe 6 Comments

Is the "Tarmogoyf token" method the new standard? I.E. if Roxanne, Starfall Savant was one set later, would she make a "Meteorite token" rather than defining it?
Separately, will you be going back to change any of these on old card like her, or Llanowar Mentor?

I think Modern Horizons sets do things other sets don’t do. I don’t know of any errata in this area.

Prowess in White's Pie

New 20 May 2024 Asked by typical-johnnyspikevorthos-blog 21 Comments

As an aside from that one question about whether prowess is still tertiary in white: Monastery Mentor being reprinted into standard as recently as MOM is a really good indicator that prowess is still in white's color pie, isn't it? I am assuming that reprints into standard still follow the same mechanical color pie that brand new cards have to.

Prowess is still tertiary in white, and yes reprints into Standard care about color pie appropriateness.

If/When: Mentor in Mono-Black or colourless?

If, but only because I’m not convinced mentor will definitely return.

Scientist Type Appreciation

New 25 Oct 2023 Asked by mrtitanic 58 Comments

Not sure if you knew this, but my mentor Dr. Charles Pellegrino's scientific research inspired Michael Crichton to write the Jurassic Park novel. Dr. Crichton credited him in the book. Seeing "Scientist" as a type reminds me of him, and as a scientist myself, I hope there will be more of them, including Oceanographers, Meteorologists, Geologists, etc. Even magical worlds must feature science.

Scientist is now a creature type we can use in the appropriate sets.

Color-Pie Break Check

Is Mentor of the Meek still a color-pie break?

Yes. If it was once per turn it would be okay.

Mentor Mechanic Analysis

New 20 May 2023 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 26 Comments

"Mentor is not a good fit for blue. Blue's +1/+1 counter interaction is usually outside of combat."To me, Mentor doesn't feel much different from Thrummingbird's Proliferate trigger on combat damage, or Guild Thief applying a counter to itself. Mentor is so telegraphed, it doesn't feel truly IN combat like a combat trick normally would. If it's not because of whether or not blue has combat tricks, what about Mentor is truly a break?

It’s not a break, but it’s a stretch.

Mentor Mechanic in Blue

New 19 May 2023 Asked by gman-003 34 Comments

Weird question, but would Mentor be an acceptable mechanic in blue? The flavor fits great, +1/+1 counters are a common blue archetype, the emphasis on attacking isn't particularly blue but I don't think that undercuts any of Blue's weaknesses, making it a mild bend at worst.

Mentor is not a good fit for blue. Blue’s +1/+1 counter interaction is usually outside of combat.

Eldraine Adventure Commander

New 09 May 2023 Asked by tominarmour 27 Comments

Hi Mark,I loved seeing the previews for Wilds of Eldraine last week. As a commander player I am curious as to why there wasn’t an adventure themed commander deck for this set. I had hoped after Gorion, Wise Mentor was released there would be new support for it in this set. Will I be pleased when Wilds come out or should I temper my expectations?

Let’s talk when we get closer to its release.

+1/+1 Counter Themes

New 29 Apr 2023 Asked by omnivirus2-blog 33 Comments

How do you feel about +1/+1 counters having "friend" themes like backup, support, mentor, and training? :)

I think we have a theme for a Friends Secret Lair. : )

Monetary Mentor Reprint

New 21 Apr 2023 Asked by jimharbor 39 Comments

Why was Monetary Mentor reprinted instead of color shifted into red and/or blue. Aren't those the token spam/noncreature/convoke colors in MOM?

Because the output is more of a white effect than a blue or red one.

Premier Set Reprints

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by tompixt 32 Comments

Hi Mark, I noticed how premier set have been getting high profile reprints at rare/mythic level such as Monastery Mentor, phyrexian Obliterator, Diabolical Intent, Liliana of the Veil etc., in addition to some interesting common/uncommon reprints. I would like to express that this form of reprinting cards is the most satisfying form I experience as it blends the elements of worldbuilding, nostalgia and card accessibility really well! Neither core sets nor master sets really did the trick for me. I hope this trend will continue?

Where it makes sense.

Teamwork Mechanics Considered

New 29 Mar 2023 Asked by coffeetime88 40 Comments

March of the Machine is the most excited I've been for a set since Unfinity! I love the return of Convoke for the heroes. Are you free to share any other preexisting mechanics that were considered to represent Teamwork?

We had a long list, but I don’t remember much of them off the top of my head. Soulbond, Mentor, and Training were there.

Appreciation and Birthday Trivia

New 12 Dec 2022 Asked by greatknightgaramond 33 Comments

Hey Mark, A few months ago, I posted a question about life changes and taking big leaps, and I wanted to voice my appreciation for your advice. I was in the process of quitting my corporate job and going back to teaching college, and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. Just last week, I signed on to be the faculty advisor for a group of students who wanted to make an MtG club on campus. So thanks for Making Magic, in all the ways you do it.For the Sacred Rite of Birthday Trivia, any fun facts about one of the teachers in Magic lore? Do you have an all-time favorite teacher/mentor figure in the story?

I’ve always had a soft spot for Barrin. That’s why Michael and I chose him to be Hanna’s father. Happy Birthday! And thanks for the update. Glad things are going so well.

Token Naming Criteria

New 10 Nov 2022 Asked by dolbyzalo 35 Comments

In the past you’ve created cards that make tokens with the same name as actual cards (i.e. Llanowar Elves from Llanowar Mentor). Why do Awaken the Woods and Staff of Titania not make Dryad Arbors?

We tend to do that when we’re purposefully playing flavorfully into the nostalgia of the older card.

Onulet's Origin

New 24 Oct 2022 Asked by krobat 63 Comments

What is an Onulet?

Vorthos answer: An artifact creature created by Tocasia, Urza’s mentor.Trivia tidbit answer: The card in Antiquities was originally called Onulets because it was an anagram of “Soul Net”, the card that mechanically inspired this card. The art came back with only one, so the name was changed to Onulet.

Creatures with Training and Mentor

Could a creature card both have training and mentor?

The rules can support it. Maybe in a Modern Horizons.
