Enchantment Creatures Design Question

New 01 Feb 2022 Asked by nextgenentertainment 59 Comments

Hey Mark. I recall when enchantment creatures were revealed for Theros there was talk about justifying their being enchantments and the design that went towards avoiding making creatures that also just had "enchantment" on the type line. Why then is the recently spoiled Fang of Shigeki just a deathtouch Lucent Liminid when that was considered the wrong way to do enchantment creatures?

We’ve evolved our thought on it. Artifact creatures can simply be artifacts because of flavor. Why not enchantment creatures?

Missed Creative Fit

Was Lucent Liminid ever on the table for There's: Beyond Death? Seems like a missed opportunity.

The creative sadly isn’t a great fit. We did talk about it.

Lucent Liminid Consideration

New 15 Dec 2019 Asked by prophet86 30 Comments

Last time we went to Theros, Future Sight card Lucent Liminid wasn't an option for reprint because it didn't have any enchantment-like qualities. Now that I see a vanilla enchantment creature previewed, I'm wondering, was Lucent Liminid considered for this set?

The flavor is sadly a poor fit.

Contraptions Design Philosophy

New 24 Aug 2016 Asked by jugglervr 62 Comments

You've said that you want to do contraptions exactly as worded on steamflogger boss... But future sight was riddled with things that ended up being done similarly but not exactly (tarmogoyf ~ Delirium boosters, sarcomite myr ~ esper shard, ghostfire ~ eldrazi, lucent liminid ~ nyxians, virulent sliver ~ infect). Why are you making Steamfloger Boss completely immutable while you solve contraptions? Isn't this just making something (that matches exactly) simply to show you can (bad design)?

Doing it in the very next set regardless of whether it fits or not is doing it to prove you can. Waiting for the right spot to properly solve it, is good design.

Theros Reprint Considerations

Was Lucent Liminid ever considered for reprint in Theros?

No, because we avoided doing vanilla enchantment creatures because we wanted them to have a mechanical enchantment quality.

Lucent Liminid Query

New 22 Sep 2014 Asked by missedtrigger-deactivated201601 25 Comments

"Because Lucent Liminid breaks the rule of all enchantment creatures - it has to be both creature and enchantment." Lucent Liminid's card literal says "Enchantment Creature - Elemental." What do you mean?

Nothing about it had the functionality of an enchantment.

Theros Reprint Decisions

New 22 Sep 2014 Asked by grandmanmacaw13 17 Comments

Why wasn't Lucent Liminid reprinted in the Theros block and Nessian Courser was?

Because Lucent Liminid breaks the rule of all enchantment creatures - it has to be both creature and enchantment. In Future Sight design, Lucent Liminid had a global effect to make it enchantment-y but it was removed during development to simplify it. I tried to stop the change but failed.

Green's Removal Abilities

New 08 May 2014 Asked by ekumeecht 25 Comments

Green is supposed to use its own creatures a way to remove other creatures. However, Theros has made it so green has straight creature removal thanks to its ability to remove enchantments. How do you justify this, but you hate that Anarchy and Chaos Warp let Red deal with enchantments?

Green has and always has had the ability to destroy enchantments. Enchantment creatures are thus vulnerable to green’s enchantment destruction much like artifact creatures are vulnerable to green’s artifact destruction. The only new thing added by Theros is the existence of enchantment creatures (barring Lucent Liminid which technically is from the future).

Missing Lucent Liminid

New 14 Apr 2014 Asked by aaronlovesmtg 15 Comments

Why are there no throwbacks to Lucent Liminid in Theros block?

We tried. I’ll talk about that in an upcoming article. The big problem was that all the enchantment creature have to have both an enchantment and a creature component which Lucent Liminid did not have.

Enchantment Critique

New 20 Mar 2014 Asked by brothervalencio-deactivated2021 7 Comments

My issue with BNG is that the enchantment type feels mechanically misused. Bestow guys felt like enchantment creatures, and Gods felt like enchantment creatures, but as we've moved further into the block things have gone downhill. The Archetypes are just creature lords with funny templates, and the Spirit of the Labyrinth cycle are literally just creatures. It feels like the enchantment type is being used purely as a placeholder for "Nyx" on cards where it makes as much sense as Lucent Liminid.

Except unlike Lucent Liminid they do have an enchantment component. I understand that many creatures also have global effects but I wanted to make sure all enchantment creatures had some enchantment-ness.

Lucent Liminid's Effect

New 20 Jan 2014 Asked by victorsantmaker 7 Comments

On the today article you said: "This was my first attempt at an enchantment creature. The version I designed had a global enchantment effect but it was removed during development because the set was too complicated." Can you tell what was Lucent Liminid enchantment effect?

I think it gave all your creatures +1/+1.

Lucent Liminid Discussion

New 23 Sep 2013 Asked by eyeball-frog 10 Comments

Is Lucent Liminid sort of like Nacatl War-Pride, Ghostfire, and Sarcomite Myr in that it represents a card that could have been from a future set, but the set took a different direction?

Not every Future Sight timeshifted card 100% captured the future it hinted at. Some showed one aspect that got used while including other aspects that didn’t.

Future-shifted Cards in Sets

New 11 Sep 2013 Asked by askmaroallthethings-blog 18 Comments

Please continue putting even the less interesting future-shifted cards into sets where they fit, it's a nice touch. Maybe don't mention it beforehand if it's just a vanilla card though, no need to go below people's expectations.

Note that while Lucent Liminid itself is not in the set, enchantment creature, the thing it future-teases, is in the set.

Token Naming Policy

why didn't for completionist sakes didn't you make a token Lucent Liminid?

With few exceptions, we don’t give names to tokens.

Original Lucent Liminid Text

Can you tell us Lucent Liminid's original rules text?

I don’t remember it off the top of my head. I’ll have to look it up at work this week.

Enchantment Creatures Role

New 06 Sep 2013 Asked by ppotatochips-deactivated2016021 9 Comments

Does Lucent Liminid have any chance of being in the set? Or are all enchantment creatures either gods or god-creatures (with bestow)?

All enchantment creatures in the block (with the sole exception of token creatures because we don’t like putting text other than creature keywords on them) have both an enchantment aspect and a creature aspect. In other words, it was very important to me that enchantment creatures be both enchantments and creatures. That does mean it’s not looking good for Lucent Liminid.

Artifact Creature Traits

New 28 Aug 2013 Asked by wotkay-deactivated20131005 15 Comments

If Lucent Liminid is a bad example of an enchantment creature, what's a bad example of an artifact creature?

Vanilla artifact creatures work because the colorlessness of the mana cost conveys artifactness.

Enchantment Creature Future

New 06 Jan 2013 Asked by dramaticspoon-deactivated202207 11 Comments

What about Lucent Liminid? should we expect to see more Enchantment Creatures on the way?

I’m not a fan of Lucent Liminid because it doesn’t feel like an enchantment in any way. I believe we will do enchantment creatures when we find a way to make them feel like enchantment creatures.

Lucent Liminid Commentary

New 13 Nov 2012 Asked by furbyfubar 4 Comments

"Lucent Liminid (from Future Sight - the only enchantment creature we’ve made)" I hope you're happy! You just made Rune-Tail cry! Well, his essence anyway...

There are tons of cards that can be creatures and can be enchantments. Lucent Liminid is the only one that does them both at the same time.

Enchantment Creatures Challenge

New 13 Nov 2012 Asked by mray7557 11 Comments

What exactly is the problem with designing enchantment creatures?

The tricky part is you have to make them feel both like a creature and an enchantment. That was my big pet peeve with Lucent Liminid (from Future Sight - the only enchantment creature we’ve made), it didn’t feel at all like an enchantment.
