Kirin

Creature Type Criteria

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by dude1818 37 Comments

Why is kirin a creature type but not giraffe? And if giraffe ever becomes a creature type, would questing beast get errata to be one?

What does and doesn’t qualify as a creature type is a tricky issue. Go too narrow and you miss some charm. Go too broad and you eliminate a lot of typal possibilities. It’s kind of Vorthos vs. Mel.

Subtype Grouping Proposition

New 02 Feb 2022 Asked by mythicos74 38 Comments

There seems to be some confusion about shrines' creature types. What do you think about the possibility of grouping subtypes with types instead of having then , maybe with small symbols to seperate types? For example, Go-Shintai would be "Legendary * Enchantment (Shrine) * Creature" instead of "Legendary Enchantment Creature - Shrine"; or Cloudsteel Kirin would be "Artifact (Equipment) * Creature (Kirin)" instead of "Artifact Creature - Equipment Kirin"...

While the creature Shrines have caused a little confusion, I’m not sure we want to change things, making things more confusing the rest of the time (and adding space restrictions) to address something we do with such irregularity.

Alternative Typeline Structure

New 02 Feb 2022 Asked by orangemage 27 Comments

For the subtype confusion, would it be possible to structure the type line something like "Artifact - Equipment, Creature - Kirin", "Legendary Enchantment - Shrine, Creature" and "Enchantment, Creature - Human Samurai"? It would require some rules rewriting and adds a few characters, but it might make things clearer.

We’d be trading one type of confusion for another.

Disturb Mechanic Rule Query

New 06 Sep 2021 Asked by captainscrapbeard 32 Comments

Hi Mark! I have a bit of a rules question regarding Disturb. When you cast the card for its disturb cost, is it being cast as a spirit or its original creature type? I'm loving the look of the new cards and I'm hoping they work with my Cloudhoof Kirin deck.

It’s a Spirit.

Monocolor Creature Types

New 25 Oct 2020 Asked by imk1602-blog 41 Comments

"There are not a lot of non-class creature types that have appeared on monocolor cards of every color." Just of the top some that have appeared as monocolor cards in every color (in cycles) are Spirit, Avatar, Incarnation, Bringer, God, Demigod, Shapeshifter, and Kirin. Also Human of course.

Birthday Trivia Request

New 14 Jul 2015 Asked by deerwife 35 Comments

it was my birthday on the 11th but it looks like i made the mistake of sending a trivia ask right as you went into the SDCC panel. is there any chance you'd please be willing to give trivia on either of my commanders (marath and celestial kirin) or-- if there isn't anything fun there-- on my prerelease promo, managorger hydra? thanks!

Marath was designed to take advantage of the Commander rule that Commanders return back to the Command Zone when leaving the battlefield (as were a number of cards in that design). The design is pretty cool in that it allows you to kill Marath so you can play him again. My only gripe is the card has three X effects you can generate by sacrificing +1/+1 counters: Putting X +1/+1 counters in a creature, deal X to a creature or player or make an X/X elemental token. They were supposed to be an effect from each of the three colors of Marath - White, Red and Green. The second ability is Red and the third ability is Green but the first ability is more Green than White. (Both put +1/+1 counters on but Green tends to do the larger numbers as going tall is more Green). Happy Belated Birthday!

Legendary Creatures' Consciousness

New 15 Mar 2015 Asked by thekesslerun 50 Comments

Was isamaru sentient? What about lot celestial Kirin, pheldagrif, polukranos, child of alara, gahaji, the sliver legends, thromok, etc?

Sentience means having sensation or consciousness. Sapience means having wisdom or judgment. All living creatures have sentience. Only intelligent creatures have sapience. Thus, all legendary creatures have sentience but not all have sapience.

KTK/DTK Parallels

New 13 Mar 2015 Asked by askingmaroquestions 42 Comments

Will we get an Arcana or article outlining all the card-to-card parallels in KTK/DTK. Things like the two Kirins and the direct reprints?

Hopefully. I think we want to let the players find stuff on their own first.
