Green's Iconic Hydra Considerations

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by dalenthas 11 Comments

Is the matter of green's iconic considered settled, or if something more fitting than hydras comes along would R&D be willing to pivot?

We’re not looking for a new one. Hydras do the job well enough. I’m not sure what new would come along (being that iconic creatures are already known things outside of Magic) after 27,000+ cards, but if something did, we’d consider it.

Text Order on Creature Cards

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by battle-of-wits 8 Comments

If a creature has a lot of text on it, and has the ability Reach, please put Reach first before all other text. When a creature has a lot of text and has flying, typically the art serves as enough of a reminder to remember that for combat purposes (especially limited). It is a complete tossup whether or not a wordy creature has reach and where it will be on the card. Examples from MH3 limited: Petrifying Meddler, Annoyed Altisaur, Nyxborn Hydra, Writhing Chrysalis.

One of the challenges of templating is what order do you put text in? Do you prioritize things that you need to know when you cast it? Things that happen when you play it? Qualities it has on the battlefield that are relevant to combat?

Hydra in Modern Horizons

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by trifas 11 Comments

Mark, you said Dinosaurs couldn't be Green's iconic as you want to print them at Common, but MH3 just brought a Common Hydra. Is that a change in iconic's philosophy?

Modern Horizon sets do all sorts of offbeat things that aren’t the norm.

Treefolk as Green Iconic Creature

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by keimtg 14 Comments

Have you ever considered making your green Iconic creature a treefolk?I like Hydra, but I think its functionality is too focused on +1/+1counters and (X)mana.

There was a period where we tried Treefolk as the iconic and it didn’t take.

Dragon Hybrids in MTG

New 29 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 60 Comments

If/When a cycle of Dragons that have a creature type with each color's Iconic race? ie Dragon Angel, Dragon Spynx. We already have Demon Dragons and a Dragon Hydra

If. I could see us hitting a lot of these over time, but all in one place is trickier.

Hydras Color Flexibility

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 26 Comments

If Hydras are Green's Iconic creatures, does that make Shivian Devastator a color break, even if Hydras originated within Red, and Devastator is specifically a nod twoards that origin?

Iconics can show up in other colors in small doses.

Colorful Iconic Creatures

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by mysterio797 21 Comments

Hey Maro, dragons seem to be the easiest iconic creature to put into other colors besides it’s main color (red)Out of the other iconic creatures (Angel, Sphinx, Demon, and Hydra) which are the least difficult to most challenging to fit into other colors?

Probably Sphinx.

Mono Green Hydra Disappointment

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by chaosascendant-blog 63 Comments

I have a Mono green Hydra edh deck, and the recent new cool Hydras doesn't fit, as they aren't mono green, like Grakmaw, Polukranos unchained/Reborn and the Goose Mother or Shivan Devestator. Why is the Iconic Green creature spread out like this, when we don't see Angels or Vampires like that? I keep looking forwards to the next set's cool Hydra, and keep getting... Shivan Devastated (pun intended).

Both Angels and Vampires exist in multicolor cards with a second (or more) color. We’ve probably done it more times than we’ve done with Hydras.EDIT: As pointed out in the comments, black’s iconic creature is Demons, not Vampires.

Iconic Creature Commanders

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 60 Comments

It may be a weird question but Why weren't the iconic creatures of the colors never the main or subtheme of a commander pre con (except dragons maybe angels if counting secret lair)? Shouldn't there be at least one mono colored Iconic creature commander pre con in the mono color they are iconic for? It feels like Hydra, Sphinx and Demons get the short end of the stick.

I don’t think that is necessarily a thing iconic creatures need to do, but is it something you all want?

Hydra Discussion

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by djunknown0 40 Comments

You’re correct, the Iconic/Characteristic races podcast is going to lead to more discussion. I don’t have too much of a preference on green’s iconic, as I’ve always leaned more into black. However, I think it would help if there were a few more legendary and/or sapient hydras. Dragons, demons, and angels all evoke visceral emotions, and having a few more characters for green fans to connect to would be beneficial. There are only 10 legendary hydras, and already 23 legendary dinosaurs thanks to some cycles. We also see some smaller Angels, Demons, & Dragons at lower rarities, which I think helps too. A few more hydras here and there to remind people.

I agree that we could have a few more legendary Hydras. I’m not convinced they need to be sapient, but it is a hotly debated topic.

Rules for Planechase Planes

New 05 Oct 2023 Asked by patronics-blog 38 Comments

Why do Planechase Planes get a place in the comprehensive rules, but something like the Face the Hydra deck doesn’t?

Face the Hydra was more play experience than product, and those are treated differently.

Sphinx and Hydra Preferences

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by caitsith4 19 Comments

Of all the things tried, I like Sphinx the best too. I'm less satisfied with Hydra, but I'm also not big on green so my opinion isn't worth as much. Also, can we thank you for sharing asks with tidbits of Magic lore and history from the players? It really helps signal boost lesser known info. Even I wasn't aware about the Ravnica angels.

You’re welcome.

Green's Iconic Instinct

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by tumblacct 35 Comments

"I think rampaging through the woods is pretty on brand for green." I think this is the underlying tension: people want iconic to have a certain amount of personality, but that's just not green's thing. Green's iconic needs to be 100% instinct, which I think Hydra does as well as anything.

There’s no requirement that all iconics are sapient.

Hydras Flavor Concern

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by thephyrrus 50 Comments

Regarding the discussion of hydras as greens iconic creature.I'm not a big fan of them myself. Like, hydras are conceptually cool, but I don't like them as the 'green creature'.I think, for me at least, it stems from the fact that, unlike the icon types of other colors, they don't have personality, and rarely play a feature in the story. Which to me leaves them feeling bland, flavor-wise.Perhaps more inclusion in the stories would help folks like them better.

I think rampaging through the woods is pretty on brand for green.

Green Iconics and Lands

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 26 Comments

Is there any merit to the argument that green's iconic to me could be much more entwined with lands, both mechanically and flavorfully, but the shift away from printing both competitively costed and frequent interaction with an opponent's lands would make this difficult to experiment with? Hydras feel like a payoff or consequence of all the green land shenanigans, which is much more indirect than something directly involved with lands.

Produce a lot of mana (part of which can be land fetching), cast a giant Hydra that can stomp over your opponent. That’s pretty green and ties into green’s strength with mana.

Green Iconic Creatures

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by strix-soven 52 Comments

Is it telling that people who seem to be unaware of how much discussion there has been about green's iconic over past years organically come to the same conclusion that it's an issue?

We’ve searched for the best Blue and Green iconics for years. Nothing scores as high as Dragons, Angels, and Demons, but Sphinx and Hydras score the highest of all the things we’ve looked at. If there is a solution it’s not for any creature type we currently use.

Hydras as Green Iconics

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by worldsaverinc 33 Comments

I will go ahead and say I love Hydras as Green's Iconic. I wish there more of them and of course more typal support for them. They play into greens strenght of powerful at all power levels and a ramp pay off. There are some very interesting multi-color hydra which play into this, but mono-green is where it shines.

Hydras do have a lot of fans (like you).
