Green's Iconic Hydra Considerations

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by dalenthas 11 Comments

Is the matter of green's iconic considered settled, or if something more fitting than hydras comes along would R&D be willing to pivot?

We’re not looking for a new one. Hydras do the job well enough. I’m not sure what new would come along (being that iconic creatures are already known things outside of Magic) after 27,000+ cards, but if something did, we’d consider it.

Angel and Dinosaur Rarity

"I’m skeptical that experiment is going to work. I think Dinosaurs work better showing up at all rarities. " - you on dinosaurs replacing hydras as green's iconic. What about angels appearing at every rarity despite being white's iconic? Why are they so different?

We occasionally do lower rarity iconics when there is a tribal focus, but it’s a infrequent thing and not a default.

Iconic Planeswalker Types

Since Ob has now given us a Demon planeswalker, do you think we'll eventually see a planeswalker for each of the Iconics?

We already have two Dragon planeswalkers and we’ve heard in world of the existence of a Sphinx planeswalker. An Angel planeswalker would need some help but as Karn shows, created creatures can become planeswalkers. A Hydra planeswalker? I’d say that’s a much lower probability.

Unique Planeswalker Origins

Currently, by my count, we have planeswalkers who are a leonin, a merfolk, a vampire, a goblin, three elves, a demon (sort of), and two dragons (three if you count Sarkhan). What are the chances of seeing an angel, sphinx, or hydra planeswalker?

A Sphinx would be the easiest. Angels are artificially made meaning that wouldn’t naturally have a spark but as Karn shows there are work-arounds. We like our planeswalkers sapient, so a Hydra would be trickier. We have had sapient Hydras I believe so also not impossible, but unlikely.
