Planar Chaos Reflections

New 04 May 2024 Asked by alakasizca 60 Comments

Hi Mark! Hopefully third time is a charm :) While reading the preview columns for Planar Chaos, I saw you wrote this: "Every choice we make has a firm grounding in the philosophical underpinnings of the colors". However, some cards clearly don't have that "firm grounding". Do you remember what made you think that Harmonize was green or Melancholy was black? It surprises me because it's so obviously not the case. Did you maybe get too carried away by the conceptual side of your idea? Thanks!

Sometimes when you mess in space you’ve never messed in before, you can have problems in understanding the scope of what you’re doing. Every effect we shifted colors in, we thought a lot about, and it was based on precedent, but sometimes we missed the forest for the trees, as the expression goes.Take Harmonize. It’s not as if green didn’t have access to card draw. What we missed is how shifting it away from being creature dependent fundamentally shifted how it got used, and allowed green to fill in a weakness in a way that was subtler than we understood at the time.Look, there’s a reason “hindsight is 20/20” in an expression. There are a lot of decisions that seem glaringly wrong looking back, but it often comes with knowledge you simply didn’t have at the time. Planar Chaos taught us the danger of playing with fundamentals. They’re a lot harder to work with than it seems at first blush.

Reprinting Certain Cards

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 37 Comments

Do you think cards like beast within, pongify, rapid hybridization and harmonize should get reprinted in commander precons? Beast within is a staple and the blue removal spells are very strong and actually are not that cheap for nonrares. Should they continue to appear in commander decks since they are already in the format or would you prefer other cards?

If a card is already in the format and there is demand for it, we’ll include it in Commander decks. I personally don’t enjoy color pie breaks being major players, but that ship has long since sailed.

Harmonize Color Concerns

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by flakmaniak 45 Comments

When you say that Harmonize is the Planar Chaos card you'd most like to undo for color-pie reasons... Is that because of its high rate of play, or because it set an expectation among players, or because it actually set precedent that caused other out-of-pie green card-drawing to be made later on? If I were deleting cards from history, the third reason would be the most important to me, and the second insofar as it leads to the third.

It’s all three.

If you could go back and prevent one color pie break in Planar Chaos, which would you pick?

Probably Harmonize.

Biggest Bend/Break Cards

Hello Mark, what was the biggest bend/break card(s) you ever designed?

Not sure. The one that probably sees the most play is Harmonize.

White's Commander Focused Card

New 02 Nov 2021 Asked by silentslade 54 Comments

"White does fine in almost every format. White's one issue is with Commander, where the format nullifies a number of white's strengths. "It's difficult to keep up in a multiplayer game when your opponents are able to generate constant card advantage in every other color for almost no effort.Even a "harmonize" in white that only draws if your commander is out, and doesn't give your opponents cards would greatly benefit the color. Do you think there is any chance we see commander focused white card advantage in the future?

We have added white card drawing, but it’s doing it in white’s way and is still fifth in card drawing.

The no-Precedent Harmonize

New 05 Jul 2021 Asked by arito-chan 33 Comments

About wish: "The spell in D&D was very red and the argument was it was impulsive tutoring. We ended up deciding to let in be in the set, but not be a precedent." Regardless of it not being a precedent, the card will be avaliable in eternal formats forever. For many people, it will look like a precedent. I'm getting "Harmonize" vibes here.

Not a precedent means we don’t use it in R&D to justify printing more cards just like it. Harmonize was also not a precedent. It’s why we keep reprinting Harmonize rather than make new versions.

Harmonize as Color Break

Hi mark! Is Harmonize a color break?

Yes.

Inclusion of Harmonize in Standard

New 15 May 2021 Asked by snarksideoftheloon 47 Comments

Harmonize got reprinted in standard limited, even if only as a Mystical Archive card. Did the council of colours debate its inclusion? Did you lose a fight for the colour pie?

The Council of Colors steps in when we add a card to a new (non-digital) format. That wasn’t the case with Mystical Archive.

Harmonize Reprint and Color Break

New 08 Apr 2021 Asked by joelkpoelk 38 Comments

You have said before that you're okay with reprinting colour pie breaks as long as they don't enter new formats. Mystical Archive is bringing Harmonize, a notorious break, into Historic. Was that given much thought?

Tabletop chooses what gets printed in paper. Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic: The Gathering Online choose what cards go into their programs.

Query on Card Reprinting

New 05 Apr 2021 Asked by shadesofpink 94 Comments

The thing is, by constantly printing and reprinting cards like Harmonize and Chaos Warp, it doesn't matter if you say they are in their colors slice of the pie, players have access to those effects, and will believe that they are in pie. Personally, I think if it is actually a colour pie break, you shouldn't ever reprint it, and definitely not add it to new formats.

If I could keep color pie breaks from being reprinted I would.

Historic Format Confusion

New 05 Apr 2021 Asked by jimharbor 44 Comments

Historic is now adding Chaos Warp and Harmonize? Are these cards in pie now? I recall you said you do not add pie breaks to formats they werent in. Thanks for answering our questions sir. Happy last day of passover!

Historic is in an odd place as it’s a digital format making use of existing cards. Those effects are not in color pie.

Opinions on Artistic Direction

I realize the art for Harmonize and Faithless Looting aren’t for everyone - but I think it’s great and motivates me to get those cards specifically. I hope Wizards knows that there are people who appreciate this kind of more adventurous art direction.

I’m curious what people here think of art like the Mystical Archive Faithless Looting.

Inclusion of Harmonize

Hey Mark, did you have any input into the inclusion of Harmonize in Time Spiral Remastered?

If my choice is between constantly reprinting the same breaks or printing new ones, I strongly choose the former.

Color Pie and Card Effects

New 29 Nov 2020 Asked by silentslade 126 Comments

I am confused about something. Concentrate is blueHarmonize is green.White which is the ally of both... Can't get that effect?

Harmonize is not in green’s color pie. It’s a Planar Chaos card. Ah, the set that keeps on giving. : )EDIT: Also, being allies with a color doesn’t increase your chances of sharing a mechanic.

Maintaining White's Uniqueness

New 16 Nov 2020 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 48 Comments

Just wanted to say I really appreciate your commitment to not making white a clone of other colors just because that would make it stronger in commander. A surprising amount of people just want things like white harmonize. I look forward to seeing the new territory it explores, though!

Happy to hear that.

Harmonize Reprint Rationale

New 11 Apr 2020 Asked by 4blackout 45 Comments

How does Harmonize keep ending up in different products? It sends the message that green can get unconditional card draw, doesn't it?

There’s a lot of demand for cards that see play, so we’ve decided we’re willing to reprint color pie breaks as long as they don’t add the card to any format that can’t already play it.

Color Bend Perspective

New 16 Feb 2020 Asked by lover-in-blue-deactivated202404 92 Comments

On the topic of acceptable color bends, is there a possibility that Planar Chaos's colorbent cards could ever return in a Modern Horizons style set? Given the massive success of things like Green Carddraw, Black Lifelink, and White Hexproof in design, I think that they were a massive boon to the color pie's range.

You saying that is only further proof to me that we shouldn’t have done it in the first place (let alone doing it again). The color’s being different is fundamental to the wellness of the game. Let me give an example. Green shouldn’t have Harmonize and now it’s a staple of Commander. You make one exception once and now it’s something that color can do forever.

Harmonize’s Color Bend

New 24 Mar 2019 Asked by ravablogs 35 Comments

Coming from Planar Chaos: how much of a bend is Harmonize? Green is pretty good at drawing cards, but it usually requires a condition be met (power of creatures, etc), so maybe not much? It's been reprinted quite a number of times and is a green staple, so I was wondering your thoughts on it.

Green’s card drawing needs to be tied to its creatures. If it can draw cards with zero creatures on the battlefield, that’s a mistake. That’s what Harmonize does.
