White's Unique Abilities

New 12 Apr 2022 Asked by boypicassofunnglassesgameneohack 103 Comments

Curious what you perceive to be white's unique abilities/identity? I'm just curious what white's strengths are that aren't as good (if not better) in green.

Effects primary in white: (green isn’t strong in current color pie in things that are bolded)
  • +1/+1 counter (creation and caring)
  • Animating Enchantments (Target/all non-aura enchantment(s) you control becomes an enchantment creature.)

  • Can’t be attacked. (Creatures can’t attack you.)
  • Can’t lose the game and opponents can’t win.
  • Destroy target attacking or blocking creature.
  • Destroy target creature. Its controller gets compensation.

  • Damage prevention (Prevent the next N damage that would be dealt to target creature/player.)

Dovin's Damage Prevention

Isn't Dovin's damage prevention more like Gaseous Form though? I thought both white and blue got that variant of damage prevention?

Blue gets that occasionally on creatures but not on artifacts, enchantments, land or planeswalkers.

Color Pie Shift

Hey Mark! Quick question: Is Gaseous Form (and Fog Bank) still part of Blue's colour pie? Thanks!

That’s now in white. Blue gets things that lower creatures’ power, -N/-0 effects.

Gaseous Form Reprint

Why didn't you reprint Gaseous Form to hint at Kiora's + ability being Blue. many people are saying the ability has been shifted to white....what is your take on this?

Gaseous Form is still in blue’s color pie (in addition to white). I don’t feel a need to have to print Gaseous Form in the same set to prove it.

Kiora Ability Origins

Now that Kiora is revealed, can I ask about her first ability? Damage prevention always was a white ability in my mind--Heart of Light, Ghostly Possession, et cetera--but here it seems intended to show her blue side. Is this a recent shift?

While not used a lot, the Gaseous Form ability is primary blue.

Kiora's Abilities Color

Couldn't all of Kiora's ability be on a mono-green Planeswalker? Explore and Fog are green, and getting a bunch of 9/9 is supposed to be green's specialty.

The first ability isn’t Fog but Gaseous Form which is a blue and white ability.
