Doubling Season Reprint

New 02 Mar 2018 Asked by windwolf777-blog 66 Comments

So, Doubling Season has not been reprinted since Modern Masters, and is currently very expensive. Eternal Masters would've been perfect for it, but that went by without print. Iconic masters as well. It would've worked very will with the Hydra "subtheme" in Green, but to no avail. Why, (if it's not reprinted in it), are you guys ignoring this expensive card? (I know you can't do it in standard but still. Not to downgrade the AMAZING reprints you guy have been doing so far though.)

Doubling Season is much beloved. Another reprint is a when not an if.

Art Quality Opinion

New 17 Feb 2018 Asked by phyrexiathings 105 Comments

I feel the art of the game is getting worse as time goes on. Compare original art maelstrom wanderer to eternal masters reprint. Beautiful hand drawn piece compared to what looks like a video game screenshot. I realize you have no control over this, but what are your thoughts on the matter?

I couldn’t disagree with you more. I believe the art is the best it’s ever been. As far as I’m concerned, our art directors and artists are hitting it out of the park set after set.

Old Border Challenges

New 29 Sep 2017 Asked by necrolevolentia-blog 22 Comments

Me and a few friends were discussing that we'd love to see an Eternal Masters art Entomb on an old border; something for future promos?

Old borders are hard to do with the new printing requirements (the info at the bottom of the cards).

Story Production Limits

New 27 Mar 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 26 Comments

So you said before that creative couldn't make stories during the time between Aether Revolt and Amonkhet because they were too busy with two blocks per year, but we got stories for Commander 2016 and Eternal Masters which was still during the two blocks per year system. So what changed? Why were they able to do stories every week before, but not anymore?

They can do so much a year. Choosing to bunch a lot of them together doesn’t change that fact.

MM2017 Preview Request

New 20 Feb 2017 Asked by rustydecknail-blog 47 Comments

Not a Modern player anymore, but as a Cube and EDH player, I'm always excited about non-standard sets. Eternal Masters and especially Conspiracy 2 were awesome for my two formats. We had at least a card or two well before the release to look forward to. I think Wizards is dropping the ball on MM2017. Give us a card or two this week!

Previews are coming.

Planeswalkers in Supplemental Sets

New 27 Jan 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 29 Comments

Why do supplemental sets have less planeswalkers than standard sets of the same size? Standard large sets have 3 or 4 planeswalkers each, while Conspiracy, Modern Masters, and Eternal Masters sets only have 1 or 2. Why not include more? (It's not like there's a popularity issue.)

Because we restrict how many planeswalkers we make so that we can make them all playable.

Rarity's Impact

New 23 Jan 2017 Asked by millerdark 26 Comments

Rarity matters only for formats like Pauper; see how Peregrine Drake's rarity change in Eternal masters shook the format last year.

Rarity matters in Un-sets due to things like Rare-be-Gone that destroys Rares and Mythic Rares.

Legacy Event Streaming Complaint

New 16 Jan 2017 Asked by icantfindausernamepleasehelp 31 Comments

Shame on you guys for not streaming the stand alone Legacy event. It's a format that gets little appreciation from WOTC and you deprived yourselves of immense marketing value. It shows the depth, diversity and history of the game. It also shows that your cards can retain their collect-ability over the years. Outside of these points, there are a ot of cards being played from Conspiracy 2 and Eternal Masters- heck, Eldrazi is basically a standard deck. Many Pros in the top8. Shame on WOTC.

Oftentimes we have to make the tough choice between two different audiences. When that happens we tend to choose the larger group to maximizing making the most players happy. While Legacy is a much beloved format, it has a relatively small audience compared to formats like Standard, Modern and Booster Draft. The Super Sunday Series was hosting a pre-Prerelease for Aether Revolt and there was a lot of excitement to see that format played for the first time.

Future Set Hopes

New 02 Jan 2017 Asked by theeverlastingdave 26 Comments

All I want for 2017 is more great limited formats like Eternal Masters and Kaladesh, Gods on Amonkhet, and a Planar Bridge on New Phyrexia.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Reprinting Color Pie Breaks

New 17 Dec 2016 Asked by siamkor 53 Comments

What's the difference between reprinting color-pie breaks in Eternal Masters, which is ok, and reprinting Chaos Warp in Commander sets, which you said was contentious and slipped through? Chaos Warp already exists... is reprinting it in a supplemental set really that bad?

Eternal Masters is nothing but old repeated cards with a theme that clearly communicates it’s from the past.Commander has new cards and feels contemporary.Having a color break in Eternal Masters says “oh yeah, they used to do that” while in Commander it says “we do this now”.

DFC in Masters Sets

New 26 Nov 2016 Asked by 12-12-island-with-flying 22 Comments

Could we see DFC in products like Modern/Eternal Masters?

Maybe. It would probably involve a strong dedication to include a number of them.

Non-Gatewatch Stories

New 15 Oct 2016 Asked by superbooster88 31 Comments

But isn't wizards still doing stories that don't involve the gatewatch? I don't remember them showing up in the Eternal Masters stories, or the conspiracy story.

Yes, we do tell stories without any member of the Gatewatch.

New Cards in Masters

New 17 Sep 2016 Asked by hellogeneraltacobouquet 18 Comments

Could we ever see a masters-type supplemental set with new cards? I.e. one that allowed for the higher complexity seen in MM and EMA?

It’s a possibility but currently not a high one.

Damnation Reprint Complexity

New 20 Aug 2016 Asked by mdbryan84 94 Comments

Re: damnation. Are you able to expound on to *why* eternal masters, modern masters I & II, conspiracy I&I, commander, and other supplemental sets were *not* perfect fits? It totally makes sense that it's difficult to include it in most blocks due to story/flavor/power levels, but it feels like supplemental sets are the perfect homes for cards like damnition and others that are hard to place

I think people are thinking as if “Could Damnation fit?” is one of the first questions asked. Yes, there are many sets where if we prioritized its inclusion, we could put it in.The issue is we usually don’t start designs asking if card X fits. We make fifty others decisions first to maximize making it a fun set to play. And then, we start asking about what specific card reprints we could include. All cards come with issues. Previous decisions in the design can raise one or more of the issues making the card not fit. Here’s a metaphor. You’re building a house. There’s a neat feature that you would include if you could, say a distinctive type of fireplace. If your goal is to build around it, sure you can include it, but if you prioritize other features, there’s just a lot of architecture plans it doesn’t fit in.That’s what’s going on with Damnation. It requires some parameters that often make it unworkable when other choices are made first.Yes, there will be a day where it fits in the structure of the set and we’ll reprint it. Just because it hasn’t happen yet doesn’t mean it never will. There’s just a bunch of priorities in front of “Can we include Damnation?”.

Damnation's Absence

New 20 Aug 2016 Asked by kelzamgaming 156 Comments

I have to say Conspiracy 2 looks amazing. But after From the Vault: Lore, two Modern Masters, Eternal Masters, and now Conspiracy 2, I am beyond baffled how R&D has managed to miss Damnation every time with as vocal as the online community is about it needing reprinted.

It took me fourteen years to bring back poison to Magic. It took me a similar amount of time to get a mechanic you will all see in Kaladesh to print. The reason is that we look to maximize each set. We don’t start every set going “Can we put Damnation in this set?” just as I didn’t start every set saying “Can poison go here?” The goal of each set is to be the best version of itself it can be, so we don’t force things in just because “players would like it”. We put something in because it makes the set better by its inclusion.Due to factors I can’t expand on, Damnation is a tricky card to include in most sets. There will come a time and place though where it be the perfect fit and we will reprint it. You have to remember that there are many things that “a lot of players” want. From the vantage point of any one of those things, it seems like we’re taking forever to do it because yes, if we prioritized that thing over everything else, we could do it in the very next set. But there are a lot of different player wants and we can’t prioritize them all. It’s on the list. We’re aware of it. The right spot will eventually come along and we’ll do it. I’m not just taking Damnation but all sorts of things that I get asked for constantly.

SOI Story Feedback

New 07 Aug 2016 Asked by thelastvisibledog 38 Comments

I'm sorry if you are getting too many complaints about the SOI story resolution.I think this spring block story got hit twice, both with breaks for Eternal Masters and Conspiracy 2, that truncated the amount of story as opposed to BFZ (which had to handle Commander, I know). BFZ also benefitted from being able to use the Origins chunk of storytime to ramp up to it. Has this been recognized as an issue to be worked on as you continue with the 2 Block structure?

I know the story team is collecting all the feedback and is working to continually improve both the story and how we tell it. As criticisms go, “We loved it and want even more of it” is pretty good. : )

Product Quality Humor

Eldrich moon is lookin great. Im still tryin to get past how much fun I'm havin with eternal masters, THEN we got conspiracy and the "awesome" fall set. Can you guys stop consecutively making great product back to back? I'm not made of money ya know

Eternal Masters Draft Memory

New 26 Jun 2016 Asked by thesilvernoble 30 Comments

Hey Mark! I got to draft Eternal Masters Friday night for the first time, and I brought a newbie friend with me expecting it to be a SOI draft. It was his first ever draft, and he opened a foil Force of Will. I just brought him back into the game a few months ago after a hiatus, and it was one of the most exciting things I've been a part of in magic after 20+ years of playing. Thanks for sticking that in there for him (especially since he traded it to me)!

Art Selection in Reprints

New 25 Jun 2016 Asked by rxphantom 19 Comments

I'd like to request a little more variation when it comes to the art selection in reprint sets like Modern and Eternal Masters. For instance, I'd have loved to see the 7th Edition Pacifism in EMA as opposed to the Grakk version we've seen a dozen times.

Continuity of art is important. Many people leave Magic for a hole and we like when they come back there’s still art they recognize.

Supplemental Set Stories

New 20 Jun 2016 Asked by napoleonica 37 Comments

With the popularity of the Commander 2015 stories and the recent Eternal Masters stories, is fiction based on supplemental expansions something fans can expect going forward?

I believe so, but I’m not sure it’s going to be done for every supplemental set.
