Armadillos and Folklore

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 41 Comments

Mark, I love OTJ, and how it uses the fauna, flora and folklore of North America to feel 'western'. Armadillos, Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Prairie Dogs, Buzzards, Coyotes, Roadrunners, Gila Monsters, Wolverines, Porcupines, Tumbleweeds (nevermind the Tumblewaggs), Beavers, Possums, Badgers, a knight riding a Moose, a battalion of various Cactus-folk and a Magic version of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox. Its like a roadtrip from my childhood through Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas was condensed into a set, even the panning for gold at a tourist trap! All I'm left wondering is when can we return so we can get a card inspired by John Henry, the steel-driving man, and maybe an ornery bison or two.

Please dole out copious high fives to those who had the idea that this set needs a bunch of critters from the southwest and the Rocky Mountains to feel like a western setting.

High fives shall be applied.

Beavers in Magic if or when?

I’ll say when, but not necessarily as a creature type.

Beaver Behavior Insight

New 14 Feb 2020 Asked by strain-of-thought 95 Comments

More on beavers: Researchers have placed speakers in the woods near Beaver dams, and played running water sounds. The beavers felt compelled to fix the "leak" and piled woods on top of the speaker. That might not be an argument for then being blue, but I wanted you to know.. :)

I always appreciate a good beaver fact. : )

Blue's Rodent Token Suggestion

New 13 Feb 2020 Asked by typical-johnnyspikevorthos-blog 79 Comments

Since the possibility of rodent tokens in every color has come up, I have to say that I think blue's token should absolutely be beavers. Not only are they semi-aquatic, beavers are well known to change their environment by constructing dams and lodges. They are one of the few animals known to artificially shape their environments to their needs. The behavior of beavers align with blue's philosophy.

There seems to be a lot of support for beavers.

Rodent Cycle Composition

Rodent Cycle: Moles should be Reds and Beavers should be Blue (to complete the Rat/Black, Mouse/White, Squirrel/Green cycle).

Interesting suggestion.

Rodent Characteristics

You asked about which rodents would fit blue and red. Blue has got to be beavers, no way around it. Not only do they swim, but they build things too!

That’s been suggested before.

Green’s View on Nature

Re: yesterday's color mailbag. Does Green also consider beavers cutting down trees as an unnatural act?

No, just as a lion killing a gazelle isn’t murder.

Unstable Draft High-Five

New 17 Jul 2018 Asked by madmanatw 45 Comments

Mark! This weekend I played my first Unstable draft, which quickly degenerated into a 5 player star multiplayer game (you win when the two people opposite from you have lost). On turn 2 someone played The Grand Calcutron, and I won by beating people up with a 15/15 Hydradoodle that I untapped with a Multi-Headed Beaver. It was an amazing time, so please accept this virtual high-five!

Accepted!

Johnny vs Spike

New 17 Oct 2014 Asked by subbak 13 Comments

The MTG Turing Machine and the MTG Busy Beavers (Season of Doubling) are probably the Johnniest things out there, but they're both about proving a result. How come?

If I understand them correctly, they’re very Spike. They’re trying to show they can accomplish a task. They’re trying to demonstrate what they are capable of. It’s not a form of self-expression which is what Johnny is all about.
