Playable Black-Border Cards

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 41 Comments

I know there's been discussion around cards like "Krark's Other Thumb" being considered black-border playable, do you think "As Luck Would Have It" could also be in that same group? It doesn't seem that crazy, when cards like "Vexxing Puzzlebox" and "Helix Pinnacle" exist.

My biggest worry was As Luck Would Have It was designed around six-sided dice, not twenty-sided dice.

Infinite Buzzbark Play

You still have to roll the dice.

Boomstacker Gameplay

New 30 Aug 2023 Asked by dialupmodern 27 Comments

Hey, big fan! I'm building a Space Family Goblinson deck (and apologies if this has been asked this before,) but when a Boomstacker stack falls, does that count as rolling dice for the purposes of triggers (The Space Family Goblinson, As Luck Would Have It, etc.?)

It does not. You have to be rolling dice for a specific card’s effect (aka the card tells you to roll die).

Unstable vs Unfinity

New 12 Mar 2023 Asked by armeizh 59 Comments

Hi Mark, yesterday we drafted a stashed box of Unstable. It involved "As Luck Would Have It" as high as 61 counters; a Five-Fingers Discount on Rules Lawyer to turn a game around and win at a negative life total; round 1 getting overtime because one player had to play two games at once due to Better Than One; and a player without a board state topdecking Over My Dead Bodies for a massive attack that left the opponent just one life short of lethal, fitting for a horror villain's last lunge. All in all a good time for everyone, and for what it's worth it confirmed that I liked Unstable more than Unfinity. Contraptions play better than stickers, and the "silly themes" feel more scattered in Unfinity, which makes the draft a bit more daunting as it's harder to get a feel for whether your deck will "get there" in terms of playability. The puns and flavour and individual cards are still solid, though! I just enjoy Unstable more.

I think Attractions are the closer thing to compare Contraptions to. Which you prefer depends on how much you enjoy planning ahead. Contraptions are Spike-ier and Attractions are Timmy/Tammy-ier.I’m glad you enjoy Unstable. I spent a lot of time on that too, and am always happy to hear people enjoying it. Stickers ended up being more polarizing than I expected. Part of it was logistical issues that we didn’t have a lot of control over.

Un-cards Casual Play Impact

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 21 Comments

Do you believe the acorn/eternal divide in unfinity will further delegitimize existing silver-bordered cards in casual play? The fact that some Un-cards ARE going to be commander legal now seems like it will only further the notion that the other Un-cards are strictly off limits in Magic’s flagship format for casual play. Regardless of if they are “Un” for rules reasons (like Frankie peanuts or goblin haberdasher) or purely due to their border (as luck would have it or beast in show) or somewhere in between (host/augment), many players are already on the fence about allowing Un-cards, even in non-tournament play. By pointing out specifically which new Un-cards are “in-bounds”, people playing casually might feel even LESS inclined to allow for the “out-of-bounds” designs, like my sweet sweet elephant man Frankie.

I’ve heard it working both ways. Some groups finally play with some Un-cards and enjoy them, so they’re more willing to let people Rule 0 in others.

Counting Pixie Guide Rolls

New 22 Jul 2021 Asked by mattfox12 30 Comments

Un-rules question: if Pixie Guide and As Luck Would Have It are out, when rolling (2) D20, does As Luck Would Have It count both rolls, or just the higher one?

Just the higher one.

D20 Mechanic and Card Interaction

New 30 Jun 2021 Asked by spaceyjdjames 38 Comments

Do cards like Krark's Other Thumb, Chittering Doom, and As Luck Would Have It interact with the D20 mechanic in AFR?

Some do and some don’t. It depends whether it says “die” or “six-sided die”. If it says “die”, it works with twenty-sided dice.

Un-Mechanic Transition

New 27 Jul 2019 Asked by righteousforest 35 Comments

If the game advanced to the point that an Un-mechanic was allowed in black border, would it be possible that a card that was originally silver-border could get a black border reprint? Or would it need to be a functional "reprint"? For example, I could see As Luck Would Have It and Three-Headed Goblin feeling flavorfully at home in black border if their mechancis were supported/supportable.

It can’t as we have two rules - one that you can play any copy of a card legal in a format and another saying that you can’t play a silver-bordered card in a non-Un tournament. That is why The Cheese Stands Alone became Barren Glory when it transitioned to black border.

top 3 cards for your St Patrick's themed deck... GO!

Well, there’s only one Leprechaun… Aisling Leprechaun from Legends. Sylvan Paradise, also from Legends, turns any number of creatures green. And As Luck Would Have It from Unstable has a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Dice Count Clarification

New 05 Jan 2018 Asked by lunck-pixelverse-blog 14 Comments

Hi MaRo, how are you? My doupt is about "As Luck Would Have It" and "Krark's Other Thumb": Does ALWHI count both dices rolls or, as mentioned on KOT, count only the one I choose to be the final result? Thx in advance :)

It only counts the die you select.

Luck Token Mechanics

New 24 Dec 2017 Asked by sometimesalwayslucky-blog 22 Comments

Two-part question since I'm thinking of making an "As Luck Would Have It" deck. Do cards that modify a die result, like "Snickering Squirrel", trigger before adding luck tokens to "ALWHI", hence increasing the number of luck tokens gained? Also, "ALWHI" reads "Whenever you roll a die", so that includes other numbered polyhedral random number generators, like those called for with the "Sword of Dungeons and Dragons", correct?

As Luck Would Have It counts the altered die roll only. And yes, other numerical dice like the 20-sided die on Sword of Dungeons & Dragons do count.

Krark's Thumb Mechanics

Yes.

You only count the die that you “count” of the two.

Both rolls count.

Dice Roll Outcomes

New 26 Nov 2017 Asked by tarectarec 12 Comments

In your FAQ you said that As Luck Would Have It would get counters from the original dice in case of a reroll. But would Chittering Doom give me a squirrel token if I rolled a 6 but then decided to reroll it (Rolling a 1 this time for example)?

No. Counting die rolls is different than triggering things based upon on a particular outcome.

As Luck Card Mechanics

New 22 Nov 2017 Asked by kandykidzero 19 Comments

RE: "As Luck Would Have It" - I assume you only count results from die that you are instructed to roll, not for something like determining who you should attack by rolling a D100 and assigning numbers to each player?

Yes, it only counts dice rolls that cards make you do. Just rolling dice for whatever reason (such as helping to randomly select something) isn’t counted.

Topical Blends Future

New 09 Nov 2015 Asked by organizedhysteria 26 Comments

By my count you've done 4 Topical Blends. 2 in 2005, 1 in 2007, and 1 in 2012. Why the long delays? Will you ever do them again? Along the same lines, would they work for a podcast topic? (Great content always, not griping, you owe us nothing.)

I just remembered I promised to do a Topical Blend this year. As luck would have it, I have one article unspoken for. Well, I guess I know what I’m doing. : ) I could try a Topical Blend podcast but I have no idea if it could work.

Avalanche Riders Creation

Just came back from a weekend of wintersports with family and friends. Have you got amy trivia on Avalanche Riders ?

It was the first Invitational card to get made even though it was the prize for Darwin Kastle for winning the second Invitational (held in Rio de Janeiro). We had not promised Darwin his picture would be in the art but as luck would have it, I was the person writing the card concepts for Urza’s Legacy (the only time I did it outside of an Un-set) so I asked the artist to use the provided photo and a tradition began.
