Shichifukujin Dragon Rarity

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by yuleooze 34 Comments

Hi Mark, while looking up the Shichifukujin Dragon I did not see anywhere that it is on the reserve list. Could a functionally identical version be made? I'm assuming the intent of the cards function is not to die with the enters trigger on the stack :p

It is one of two Magic cards that only one exists in the world, so I do not expect it to get reprinted. I do know as the person that designed it, it was more about being cool to read than play.

Intimidate Vs Menace

Why doesn't Nuka-Nuke Launcher just give menace, instead of the largely deprecated intimidate? Is there some Fallout reference I'm missing?

Can any Fallout fans answer this?

Comparing Card Types

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by tybonel13 30 Comments

Would saying that Baldur's Gate Wilderness is the same sort of "card" as Garruk the Slayer and the ones made for Theros block's Hero's Path be an accurate statement?

Yes.

Acorn Richard Garfield Rating

What's your hunch on how solidly acorn Richard Garfield, PhD is? Like on a scale of Uktabi Kong to More or Less, which is he closer to?

Very solidly.

Eternal-legal Uktabi Kong

New 07 Mar 2024 Asked by ragavanwithagun 27 Comments

“What other silver border cards are people interesting in seeing become Eternal-legal?” Uktabi Kong! I both rule0 him and see him played with some regularity

He could easily be Eternal-legal.

Designing Synergistic Cards

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by zombsidian 22 Comments

So, with the release of Slime Against Humanity, obscure cards like Nantuko Shrine got way, way more popular because of the synergy betweet the two. Does R&D ever develop new cards in order to bolster more older obscure cards, or is it usually just a coincidence?

We make open-ended designs aware of things that exist in the past.

Green Power Spells

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by moonsliceman 25 Comments

I've been playing Standard on Arena, and Master's Rebuke feels so much like Doom Blade it's stopped being funny. With the overall increased power numbers in green, bite spells feel very pushed, and frankly, they don't strike me as green feeling either. Could I request a return to fight spells?

The increase in bite spells comes from play design needs. From a color pie perspective, it still hits the core green necessity that green is reliant on its creatures.

Rukh Egg Reference

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 27 Comments

Would you ever print a card like Rukh Egg pre-rules clarification where it worked from anywhere? It's an interesting part of magic history that would be neat to reference, at least from an un-set.

Note that wasn’t the intent of the card, but bad templating. We have played around with graveyard triggers that work when coming from other zones.

Card Text Variations

New 03 Oct 2023 Asked by boymeetsanime 34 Comments

Hi Mark, do you know why some cards such as Lazotep Sliver have the wording "Sliver creatures you control" while others like Rukarumel, Biologist have "Slivers you control"? This extends to quite a few creature types, and for some reason Regal Sliver even has both wordings.

When the Tribal card type was in regular use we used “<Creature Type> creatures”, but once that stopped we eventually went back to just “<Creature Type>”.

Legends Design Request

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 56 Comments

It's been a while now, but I really appreciated the Legends Retold box toppers in Dominaria United; bringing old underpowered legends back up to speed with current Commander design conventions. So high fives for that. Can we expect more or less of this design approach down the line? I'd love to see something like Thriss, Nantuko Primus get a glow-up for example.

If we did it again, what batch of legendary creatures would you like us to focus on?

Justice By Cookie

If or when: Sir Gynger, the Meal Ender, Mother of Cookies, the Sole Survivor of the Boiling Cauldron, the Last of Her Batch brings Garruk Wildspeaker to justice?

If she hasn’t already. : )

Modern Relevance

New 17 Aug 2023 Asked by rodrigoserafimfr 44 Comments

Hey Mark! Is there a reason why Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor is commander-only? That would be just the card Modern Faeries players have been asking for years, and honestly it doesn’t seem that strong compared to the rest of modern

It’s not as if we design cards in a vacuum and then decide what formats want it. The card was designed for a Commander deck, so there was no point where its relevancy in Modern was considered.

Uktabi Kong's Un-Status

New 23 Apr 2023 Asked by old-planet 35 Comments

What made Uktabi Kong an un-card at the time? To me it seems completely fine within the rules.

It was more the flavor than the mechanics.

Un-cards Legality

New 22 Apr 2023 Asked by godsmack711 47 Comments

UNQUESTION: Since this question does not involve a product release, I'm hoping you can answer it definitively... Now that Unfinity has allowed for eternal legal un-cards is reassessing Unglued, Unhinged, Unstable and Unsanctioned cards for eternal legality an if or a when? If it's a when, when is that happening? I really want to play Uktabi Kong in my Kibo deck without having to rely on rule 0.

It’s an if, but I’m working to make it a when.

Kaito Shizuki Origin

New 20 Apr 2023 Asked by bace-jeleren 97 Comments

Oh hi Mark! It's my birthday, and I've come to invoke the sacred tradition of Birthday Trivia in hopes to learn a cool fact about the planeswalker, Kaito Shizuki! He's quickly become one of my favorite Magic characters, and getting to learn even a crumb of behind-the-scenes knowledge about my Boy would honestly make my birthday perfect! Thank you for everything you do here on Tumblr, by the way, you rock!

Kaito started as “blue/black Ninja planeswalker”. We’d talked about wanting to have a Ninja planeswalkers for years. Once we knew we were going to a Japanese-inspired world (it wasn’t definitely Kamigawa yet), we penciled it in. And it never left! Happy Birthday!

Tribal Mechanics Limitations

New 31 Jan 2023 Asked by stormcrow13 29 Comments

Why can't cards that do extra if you control a creature of a type, when they target a creature of a type, return to hand when a creature of a type enters the battlefield, etc. be tribal? I don't see a downside making cards that care about a creature type be tribal. Simple token creating spells don't care about the creature type so they wouldn't need to be tribal. For example Sosuke's Summons has a reason to be tribal and Krenko's Command doesn't.

It’s a matter of cost versus benefit. Adding a lot of words for minimal mechanical interaction isn’t a great trade-off.

Ticking Mime Bomb Rules

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by bobinthings 21 Comments

Hi Mark. Unfinity ruling - when playing Ticking Mime Bomb in Britain can we use our national understanding of the word “pantomime” (musical comedy theatre - see Wikipedia page for pantomime for more details) rather than the separate concept of “mime” the card implies?

The intent of the card is that use mime rather than singing as singing what creature you want them to choose isn’t much of a minigame.

Secret Lair Art Praise

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by jtfr96 30 Comments

Just got in my secret lairs for Street Fighter, Kaito Shizuki, and the Kamigawa manga art, and I just wanna say that they look incredible in person. WOTC really knocked it out of the park with the art for this round of drops

Glad you enjoy it.
