Draft Themes in MH3

New 29 May 2024 Asked by trifas 32 Comments

Does every Wedge have a draft theme in MH3? Jeskai has Energy, Temur has Eldrazi and Abzan has Modified. I wonder if Sultai and Mardu have something too.

There’s connective tissue, but not a full named mechanical theme.

Color Shift Explanation

New 27 May 2024 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 1 Comments

So last week, iirc, you mentioned that today's making magic article explains why energy moved from temur into jeskai. But the article makes no mention of the color shift. Can you explain why it had to move colors?

I believe I said my podcast with Erik Lauer on the topic talks about it. That goes up this Friday. But maybe I misspoke and said my article.I’ll give you the short version. The set had to divvy up the core themes and Eldrazi worked better in green/blue/red as it wanted to have more ramping elements and wanted green more. Energy went into blue/red/white because it had more of an aggro component and played better in those colors.

Energy in Jeskai

New 13 May 2024 Asked by weebos 26 Comments

Is there a reason why MH3 seems to focus Energy in Jeskai when it was more Temur in Kaladesh? It's cool, but I was hoping to see more Green Energy cards.

I recorded a podcast with Erik Lauer on the vision design of Modern Horizons III and we touch upon that exact issue.

Three-Colour Combinations

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 14 Comments

So far Temur, Bant, Esper, Naya and Grixis have been previewed. Can we expect all 10 three-colour combinations in OTJ ?

No, all ten are not there.

Energy Deck Color Choice

New 28 Feb 2024 Asked by validtangent 18 Comments

Hello Mark! After reviewing the Modern Horizons III Commander Precons, I was curious how the energy deck ended up in Jeskai instead of say Temur, cutting green, a color with twice as many energy cards as white. Thanks for any insight you might have!

I assume it has to do with themes in Modern Horizons 3.

Commander Product Strategy

New 28 Dec 2023 Asked by hodorkotb 39 Comments

When designing a Commander product, do you approach each deck/commander as a faction? Do you look at potential archetypes from tearing the decks apart and putting them back together (e.g. RUG in WHO) as a faction? Finally, would you consider a podcast on Universes Beyond design?

Designing Commander decks is partially about how the deck plays in a vacuum and partially about how it plays against the other decks that come out with it. The latter is extra important in Universe beyond decks. Usually each deck is looking to have a new theme or a new take on an old theme. It also thematically ties itself to the product it is released with. Universes Beyond design has been added to the “short” list.

Green Mechanics Query

New 25 May 2023 Asked by thetitan555 20 Comments

Does green get to return its own stuff to hand? Eg Roaring Primadox, Kolga the Titan Ape, Temur Sabertooth

We occasionally (although infrequently) do it as an upkeep cost.

Temur Werewolves Concept

New 03 Mar 2023 Asked by monorayjak 63 Comments

Hi Mark, I wanted to ask your opinion on this, because its a hill I'm willing to die on and no body else I talk to thinks it even makes sense really. Do you think Werewolves based in Temur could exist? Not that we will see them or anything like that, but do you think the idea behind them is feasible: That blue wants perfection, and what could possibly be more perfect than the body and ferocity of a beast fused with the brilliance of inventors? Does that make sense within Temur to some degree?

I think the natural third color for Werewolves in a vacuum is black, but in the right world with the proper creative creature types can make sense in other colors. White Zombies on Amonkhet are a good example.

More Wedge Commanders

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by strix-soven 36 Comments

May I request more wedge commanders? There are nearly 2x as many shard as wedge. In case you're interested: Sultai 17, Temur 15, Jeskai 19, Abzan 12, Mardu 23. Wedge total 86. Esper 34, Grixis 39, Jund 28, Naya 30, Bant 29. Shard total 160.

We do them in about equal numbers. The discrepancy comes from the fact that we used to do a lot more of the ally combinations than the enemy ones.

ONE Set Color Themes

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by beastmasterftw 31 Comments

Hi Mark, I was looking at the ONE cards, and I noticed that a lot of the mechanics seem to fall into 3 color pairs, specifically the enemy color wedges (Temur has oil counters, Sultai has proliferate, Abzan has toxic, and Jeskai seems to have some artifact synergies). I was curious if this was intentional, and if it was, if it means that ONE was a wedge set at some point in design, or if this was a result of some other part of the way you design sets.

It was purposeful that certain themes show up in three colors, but it wasn’t because the set was ever a three-color set. It just lets us have some nuance with draft color pairs. For instance, white, black, and green are the toxic colors, so it lets us do three different draft archetypes that are each distinct from one another.

Temur Design Trivia

New 20 Jan 2023 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 31 Comments

Had my birthday this last week. So I'm invoking trivia! Any cool info about designing temur colored cards? (Not necessarily designing for the clan)

When we designed Bear’s Companion, there was a big discussion about making a 4/4 Bear. My response was we should be suspicious of the 2/2 Bears. Those seemed odder to me than a 4/4 one. Obviously the pro-4/4 camp won the argument.Happy Birthday!

Temur Wedge Insights

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by monorayjak 53 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my 22nd birthday. Can I have some trivia relating to my favorite wedge Temur? Also, if you don't mind asking a bonus personal question or two, what is your favorite three-color combo and triple color card? Feel free to ignore those last two, those are just me being curious. Thanks in advance Mark!

Temur plays into an aspect we don’t often see in blue, a quest for physical perfection. I don’t have a favorite trio. I personally am Jeskai (blue/red/white), if labeled as three colors. I’ll choose a card I just designed as my favorite three-color card. I’m really proud of it. : )

Cyborg's Magic Colors

Would you consider Cyborg from Teen Titans Simic or Temur?

It depends which version you’re talking about. The Teen Titans Go version definitely has red.

Tribal Support Review

New 25 Oct 2022 Asked by lylethebloody 81 Comments

About this time last year, I asked you what creature types you felt like needed support (either for EDH and you allowed your readers to weigh in. I was wondering if you'd be interested in doing again. I would also like to ask how R&D feels like they have done over the past year in terms of expanding tribal support to tribes that need it. It definitely seemed like there were a few creature types (Assassin and Archer for example) that definitely got some needed assistance over the past year. Here's hoping for Temur Dinosaurs in Return to Ixalan!

Answer away everyone.

Temur's Blue Aspect

New 19 Sep 2022 Asked by untapupkeepdrawpact 53 Comments

Hello Mark! What makes the Temur clan in Tarkir "Blue"? The aspect of Savagery seems like just a Gruul notion; there's nothing particularly thoughtful about Savagery.

The Temur are about physical perfection, and blue is all about reaching one’s potential.

Faction Name Origins

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by monorayjak 31 Comments

Hey Mark! Just wanted to say thanks for answering a question I asked before! It means a lot to me, even though its small. Anyways, this is a question that I'm not sure you'll actually know the answer to or not, but where do the names for factions come from? Like, does anyone you know (yourself included) have a method to create the names? Like, Maestros. How did that come about? Temur? Izzet? Thanks for any answer you give!

It’s the creative team’s job to generate those names. There are a lot of tricks they use to make them.

Lack of Thematic Differences in Capenna

New 10 Apr 2022 Asked by braveswordwielder 83 Comments

I personally don’t feel the Capenna families differ enough thematically. They all have the same goal, they all seem to have the same view of society and the world, and despite being based on different crime tropes, they all seem to use the same methods. There are a lot of flavor texts in this set where, if you pulled them off the card and presented them in isolation, could have been said by any of the families. It really does feel like the only difference between them is aesthetic — how do you want your violent, money-grubbing gang to dress? This has never previously been a problem for Magic’s factions. There’s no confusing the Orzhov with the Simic, or Bant with Esper, or Jeskai with Temur, even when they share colors. I do wonder if there’s really enough trope space in this genre to support a five-faction world. (This is not helped by two of the families barely appearing in the fiction, incidentally.)

Streets of New Capenna is trying something a little different in that all the factions are based on different categories within the same genre. If we want to do a lot of faction sets (and we do, players like them), we have to explore ways to do it without chewing up as much conceptual space. Each are as different mechanically as other faction sets, but the flavor is a little tighter.

Three-Color Cards Sequence

New 24 Mar 2022 Asked by rs-torres 62 Comments

Hey Mark! I noticed something that got me curious... I'm used to the WUBRG color sequence in Magic, and thought every card followed this pattern, but I noticed that's not true! Speaking about the 3-color cards, Grixis, Esper, Jund, Temur and Abzan cards follow the WUBRG sequence in its mana cost, but Jeskai, Naya, Mardu, Sultai and Bant cards do not, and I have to ask... why?

All ten three-color pairs do actually follow a WUBRG pattern. The central color, the one with two allies in arcs and two enemies in wedges, is in the middle. Then the colors follow the two-color order. For example, we use WU and GW, so the arc mana is GWU. Likewise, we use WB and RW so that order is RWB.

Differences Between Wedge, Shard Planes

New 13 Mar 2022 Asked by cle-guy 30 Comments

Is one way to differentiate between wedge and shard planes to change which color is primary in each faction? For instance Temur in Khans of Tarkir focused on green but Ketria (same colors: URG) focused on blue in Ikoria. Does that strategy work to help make the factions unique?

Khans of Tarkir was weird in the factions changed over time. Normally, in tri-colored factions, we focus on the center color (aka the one with two allies or two enemies).

Absence of Temur, Azban Commanders

New 05 Feb 2022 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 43 Comments

I love the three color commanders we got with this set, but why no Temur or Azban when the other wedges got representation?

It wasn’t designed as a cycle. Each card just ended up being the colors that made the sense for it.
