Temur Werewolves Concept

New 03 Mar 2023 Asked by monorayjak 63 Comments

Hi Mark, I wanted to ask your opinion on this, because its a hill I'm willing to die on and no body else I talk to thinks it even makes sense really. Do you think Werewolves based in Temur could exist? Not that we will see them or anything like that, but do you think the idea behind them is feasible: That blue wants perfection, and what could possibly be more perfect than the body and ferocity of a beast fused with the brilliance of inventors? Does that make sense within Temur to some degree?

I think the natural third color for Werewolves in a vacuum is black, but in the right world with the proper creative creature types can make sense in other colors. White Zombies on Amonkhet are a good example.

Hydras as Green's Iconic

New 01 Nov 2014 Asked by dace67 30 Comments

Why were hydras (a historically red creature type) chosen as green's iconic and not Wurms who have had a history of being beefy green creatures?

Wurms are wingless dragons and are just too close to dragons, red’s iconic. We explored all of the creatures in green and couldn’t find anything that worked, so we had to branch out (pun as always intended). I believe hydras were in red because of Alpha’s Rock Hydra which tied to elements of red. We like it as green’s iconic because it plays nicely into both green’s ferocity and its connection to growth.

Clan Words Critique

New 01 Sep 2014 Asked by liampk 42 Comments

MaRo, I have to say I find the clan words creative okay'd in your article to be strange. "Cunning", and "endurance" are fine, and I'm really glad that "charisma" was changed, but Mardu worshipping "speed" feels like the most immersion breaking, game-y term I've ever heard. I also don't see why they'd have a problem with "strength", although "ferocity" is fine too.

How is “speed” immersion breaking? Why can’t a clan admire speed?

Art Perception

It's kind of annoying you guys gave Triumph of Ferocity an alternate art. There is nothing wrong with the original art; it portrays the struggle equally, in which Liliana wins with Triumph of Cruelty. I think doing so admits that WOTC thinks the first portrayal is indecent, when it is not.

You have to remember that intent is not enough. Yes, our motives behind the illustration were pure, but the way it was perceived upset a portion of our audience. We have to be sensitive to the fact that, out of context, the art portrayed some things that we work very hard to avoid in our game. The portrayal of women in Magic is something that we strive to be a leader on in our industry. Part of living up to that goal is being aware not just of what we mean when we make our cards but what the audience perceives when they look at them. We changed the art because it was creating messages, intended or not, that we did not mean to send. I realize that some people, such as yourself, did not perceive the art that way, but you need to understand that others did and we have to be respectful of that.

Designer's Ferocity

After seeing the ferocity you embodied with the axe, are there any members of WotC who should have something to fear from the Apex Designer? Is it possible to now say you like Planeswalkers as long as the axe is within view of a sideways glance?

I haven’t tried the “crazy man with an axe” approach to design. : )

Badger Encounter Story

New 25 Jan 2014 Asked by wilderrover 48 Comments

Maro, a few years back on the way home from the pub, I was attacked by a badger. This actually happened. I emerged victorious in the brief altercation that followed, but I certainly gained a new respect for the ferocity and courage of the humble badger. I'd like the Question Marks who have disrespected the badger to know - NEVER underestimate a badger. They're worthy adversaries. I'm actually not kidding, I genuinely get charged by a badger. I can't wait to re-enact our scrap in card form!

I also get people sending me articles about people being attacked by squirrels. Do not disrespect the badger (or squirrel).

are the ordeals basically your attempt to fix mirage's consuming ferocity?

I’ve been remaking (and improving upon) Consuming Ferocity for years.

Shift to Green Hydras

New 20 Sep 2013 Asked by calypsoinferno 8 Comments

Hydras started out as part of the Red color pie (Hydra and Balduvian Hydra) and fitted it nicely because they had the whole Fireball on legs vibe to them. What has been the philosophy behind the shift to Green?

Green is the color of growth and ferocity. Also, hydras kind of got drowned out by dragons in red.

Hydras Embody Green

New 04 Jul 2013 Asked by piaco 11 Comments

Just to make a counterpoint here on Blogatog, I think you finally got the point of Green's iconic creature with hydras. I really think they embody Green's "ethos" with perfection. They're huge, mighty, and epic-feeling, they have strong fantasy background as rare, savage monsters, and are a pure manifestation of "savagery", "ferocity", and "growth". Yeah, Hydras (Hydrae?). You got it. Congratz.

Both hydras and sphinxes are our latest attempts and green and blue iconics respectively, but I’m happy that both are showing potential.

Triumph of Ferocity Art

New 25 Apr 2012 Asked by dukkhasatva 29 Comments

It seems there is quite the discussion about the art of Triumph of Ferocity. If one has no context/background knowledge, that does look like the "helpless woman" you talked about not wanting on cards. Your thoughts?

I feel like its unfair to judge everything out of context. Part of the story had a big fight between two of our main planeswalkers. We want to show that on a card. Can we only illustrate that fight if Liliana is shown winning?  That seems just as sexist to me. As is, Liliana wins that fight. It’s not like we’re portraying her as some weak victim. She’s holding her own with a man twice her size.  I get where people are coming from, but I have to stand up for context.
