Take Down

Future Set Speculation

New 02 May 2023 Asked by unknown-destination 41 Comments

Hi Mark! Is there a chance for a future set where there's only one Planeswalker, that being the antagonist of the story and the rest of the important characters are legendary creatures; either the servants of the Planeswalker or the protagonists trying to take down the Planeswalker?

There’s definitely a chance.

How do 15 squirrels take down Emrakul?

14 stand behind him and one pushes.

HOU Cycle Design

New 30 Jun 2017 Asked by comicsammrh 115 Comments

Did the HOU Defeat cycle initially have some text about "not a Bolas planeswalker spell/permanent"? (I.e., Jace's Defeat can't counter Bolas spells, Chandra's Defeat can't deal damage to Bolas planeswalkers). If so, why was it removed?

Bolas would take down an alternate Bolas in a heartbeat.

Gatewatch Power Perspective

New 16 Jul 2016 Asked by venserismyhomeboy-deactivated20 53 Comments

I think the main complaint on the whole "nothing bad has happened to the gatewatch" thing is where they started. It'd be like the avengers formed and immediately took down Thanos. The eldrazi were these incredibly monstrous forces of - nature? something? - that seemed like the biggest, baddest thing we've ever had in magic and the gatewatch got together and dispatched them with relative ease. But maybe the disconnect is the eldrazi arent THE big bad to wotc, just seemed that way to us.

You do realize in both the comics *and* the movie, The Avengers form and take down Loki, one of the biggest bads in the Marvel universe. : )

Is the deck throwing incident when you decided your life goal would be to take down Magic?

Magic hurt me. I’m going to hurt it back.” : )

Answer Mismatch Issue

Why did you take down those questions? I loved your answer about how fblthp being a planeswalker was "a creative decision".

The mismatched answers seem to cause more confusion than enjoyment.

White Removal Philosophy

New 19 Oct 2014 Asked by mattlashof-blog 16 Comments

How do you feel about white removal like Smite the Monstrous? I know you like white's answers to either have answers, or have "you messed with me" flavor, but Reprisal goes back to Alliances.

White gets a little of “take down the big guy”. I’m not a giant fan of it but know it exists. Something going far back is not evidence necessarily though that it should be there.

Highlighted Words Mystery

New 16 May 2014 Asked by ablogoficeandfire1-deactivated2 8 Comments

What's with the highlighted words on the new cards? Will they highlighted words give us access to secret bases underground where WOTC is secretly manufacturing power 9 cards to sell on the secondary market and subsequently take down the secondary market?

It has to do with how cards look on Magic Online. For Vintage Masters, we’re trying to show you the Magic Online version. Note, there have been some technical issues with trying to do that this week.

Red Strategy

New 13 Jun 2012 Asked by keated 7 Comments

Isn't 'scorched earth' Red's favourite answer to things? After all, the most sure-fire way to remove anything is to take down your opponent...

One of the answers we gave red long ago was the “nuke everything” plan. It’s okay for red to get rid of enchantments when it’s wiping everything out.

Grizzly Bear Analysis

New 14 May 2012 Asked by ccgnick 19 Comments

I'd actually say that Grizzly Bears being plural and 2/2 makes perfect sense. A well trained human (1/1) would probably be able to dispatch a single Grizzly Bear, but two or three bears would be able to take down the human. I think either you're underestimating what a well trained human can do, or I'm overestimating what you mean by well trained.

I think you’re underestimating a grizzly bear.

Innistrad's Firearms

New 24 Mar 2012 Asked by togglerjim-blog-deactivated2021 1 Comments

A few cards in the Innistrad block depict traditional handguns, first time we've seen 'em since the early stretches of the game... any reason we're seeing them now? Considering how a token produced from Gather the Townsfolk that apparently has some sort of handgun can't take down a Sanctuary Cat, I'd question their relevance in the setting.

They’re not hangguns. They are small personal crossbows. There’s no gunpowder on Innistrad.

Sanctuary Cat Lore

New 07 Feb 2012 Asked by foilfleshformer-deactivated2012 22 Comments

What's the flavor justification for Sanctuary Cat being able to take down a trained soldier and live?

I guess you’ve never gotten into a fight with a Sanctuary Cat.
