Blue/black is my opinion.

Hand Tracking Mechanics

New 02 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 31 Comments

In a previous answer you said effects that care about how long a card has been in your hand is alchemy territory, but your skeptical of if they would do it. Funnily enough, They have done it! Captain eberhart reduces the cost of cards you’ve drawn this turn and raises the cost of cards your opponent drew this turn. Technically this could work in paper as it functions like sylvan library or miracle, although there are practical issues since tracking across an entire turn is very different than checking only when you draw the cards

Sylvan Library Color

Sylvan Library would still be a weird effect/template, but in-pie for black, right?

If we made Sylvan Library today, it would be a blue/black card.

Is Sylvan Library a bend? Reading the text it seems like a black card

Sylvan Library is a break. It’s actually a blue/black card.

Green's Power Analysis

New 04 Dec 2019 Asked by xenrac 31 Comments

Is the Pioneer banned list good evidence that Green, without color pie breaks, has been trending too strong in recent years? Because, anecdotal evidence, in my experience, the majority of green's dominance in commander comes from totally in color pie features such as card draw tied to land or creatures, land ramp, and universal regrowth effects. Sylvan Library may be a break and entirely too good, but it does not win the game by itself.

Card draw tied to land *is* a break. Green’s card draw needs to be tied to creatures.

Sylvan Library's Pie

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by yorgi-north-deactivated20231019 30 Comments

Are cards like Sylvan library and Abundance within green's colour pie? I feel like they should be black and white respectively.

Those abilities left green years ago.

Modern Horizons Color Compliance

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by btwofftopic 44 Comments

I've seen someone wonder about Sylvan Library in Horizons on Twitter, and although the consensus is "it would never happen", it led me to the question: does Modern Horizons follow the current iteration of the Color Pie? Despite power level, Color Pie alone would keep out, say, Swords to Plowshares.

Modern Horizons had to go through the Council of Colors.

Green Card Mechanics

would a card like Sylvan Library be less of a break in green if the effect was on a creature?

Not really. Green doesn’t pay life to draw cards.

A break. Card drawing in green is tied to creatures.

Addressing Color Pie Evolution

New 13 Aug 2017 Asked by tinyhideoutbouquet-universe-blog 68 Comments

The problem with color pie break intransigence is that the color pie itself evolves. What used to be canon is now a break. For people who are not interested in Standard or Limited and only play Eternal (i.e. Commander, Legacy, Vintage etc.), fast mana IS part of black's slice of the pie simply because Dark Ritual exists and gets competitive play. Same for Pyroblast, Sylvan Library, etc. People won't just stop playing Magic with these cards because R&D changed their minds about them.

Magic’s past is littered with mistakes especially from its early years where we were still figuring a lot of things out from power level to rules to color pie. We can’t erase the mistakes of the past, but we can keep from replicating them for the future. Plus every year we tow the line and keep Magic in the confines of modern design and development, we lessen the number of players playing with cards outside of it.#WotCStaff

Color Pie Consistency

New 05 Jun 2017 Asked by tinyhideoutbouquet-universe-blog 40 Comments

Are you sure the color pie is the same in all formats? For Eternal players (Legacy Commander and the like) most strategies and gameplay revolve around staples that are breaks according to the modern day color pie (Harmonize, Pyroblast, Sylvan Library, Swords to Plowshares, etc.) so their conception of the color pie (as in what color offers to them) is very different from that of R&D. Aren't you afraid of becomong out of touch with a growing portion of your playerbase about how Magic plays out?

The color pie shifts over time so obviously the size and time period of the cards in the format dictates what the color pie looks like within it. What I said was that at any one point in time there’s only one color pie and all new cards are made using that color pie. We can’t look at every new card through the lens of every version of the color pie.

Planar Chaos Theme Idea

New 31 May 2017 Asked by crazychucky 215 Comments

I, for one, would be tickled pink about a "fixed" Planar Chaos theme, one that took old cards that no longer fit in the modern color pie and reskins them into what they currently should be. We could finally see the blue/black equivalent of Sylvan Library!

Hmmm…

Sylvan Library Colors

Given that Sylvan Library is a break for Green, what color(s) would that card be if made today, as written? My guess would be black or black-blue.

Blue/black.

Harmonize is a bend. Sylvan Library is a break.

Are Sylvan Library and Harmonize color pie breaks when card draw/advantage isn't tied to creatures in some way?

Pie bends more than breaks but yes.

Green's Philosophy

New 26 Mar 2017 Asked by tangiblebanana 30 Comments

In regards to color pie philosophy, how do you reconcile green's "resistance to change" with advantage cards like Giant Growth, Exploration, or Sylvan Library? I know that green is about growth, but in my mind, growth is a type of change. Is it because the effects all strengthen the game rule mechanics that are already there (e.g. You already get to play lands, but now you get to play more)? Good job on the color pie articles, by the way :)

Green is against artificial change. It is just fine with normal, natural change.

Sylvan Library Question

New 07 Aug 2016 Asked by pumpkabrie 41 Comments

The color pie was still being figured out in the early days. If we made the card today, it would be Blue/Black.

I believe Sylvan Library today would be a Blue/Black card.

Green Enchantments

New 22 Dec 2015 Asked by slimonz 28 Comments

Has green gone away from having powerful, interesting enchantments? Like Sylvan Library (out of colour pie, I know), Survival of the Fittest, Aluren, Pattern of Rebirth, etc? Seems like a space green used to play in that it doesn't any more...

Green is still allowed access to powerful, in color pie, enchantments.
