Survival of the Fittest

Green-Blue Overlap

New 25 May 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 31 Comments

Green cares about evolution but so does Blue. Green takes a survival of the fittest approach to evolution, while Blue takes the adaptation processes and ultimate mutation benefits into account. Is there more to the Green Blue overlap?

There is a love of observation and a joy of interconnected systems that green and blue both enjoy.

Survival and Scavenging Philosophy

New 08 Nov 2021 Asked by princedenzo 58 Comments

Hey Mark!, I find it interesting that black/green is both the colours of survival of the fittest and also the colours of scavengers. So my question is how are these seemingly opposite roles reconciled under the same colors philosophically?

Why do you think survival of the fittest and scavengers are opposites? They overlap a lot.

Green Philosophy Mechanics

New 10 Jul 2019 Asked by treysorensen 36 Comments

I’m a little confused by some of green’s philosophy in the color pie and how it’s represented mechanically. Death is still very much a part of the life cycle, and it can be sapiogenic and massive and random as science has told us. While I think mechanics like fight are great at represented death in green as “survival of the fittest”, do you think cards like Extinction would be (should have been) printed in green to better represent this flavor?

No, because green’s mechanical identity requires using its creatures to deal with other creatures.

Color Philosophies

New 18 May 2017 Asked by ihaveaten 45 Comments

Regarding the "Colors in one word" response from earlier -- Blue as Strive? I thought Blue's theory was more about learning and knowledge than conflict. Same for green. Isn't green all about survival of the fittest? That seems more like striving than accepting.

Strive to be the best version of yourself you can be.Accept the world as it is and understand your place in it.

Green vs Black Conflict

New 15 Nov 2016 Asked by siamkor 66 Comments

Could you please clarify an issue regarding the Green vs. Black conflict? Green is a believer in the natural order, which includes prey and predator. I understand why Green wouldn't want prey going out of its way to become predator (part of Black), but shouldn't it be okay with the notion of true predators taking advantage of the weak (another part of Black, i.e., Vampires, some Demons...)? Thanks!

People confuse “survival of the fittest” between Black and Green. Black’ Survival of the Fittest is the idea that the stronger person will get what they want. Might makes right. If you can take something away from someone else, it belongs to you.Green’s Survival of the Fittest is the Darwinian meaning. Things that can survive to mate pass along their genetic traits. Over time the traits that better allow survival will grow while those that don’t will die out - through natural selection.

Sith Philosophy Color

New 24 Dec 2015 Asked by dukepaulus 58 Comments

On the Sith being green, if you get into more of the extended universe stuff like the games and books, the Sith believe very firmly in survival of the fittest and fitting into a natural order, part of which is the "Rule if Two", which states that the Sith Lord must have an apprentice that will eventually kill their master and take on an apprentice of their own. In many ways, they're as green as the Jedi.

You are confusing Green’s Survival of the Fittest with Black’s. Green Survival of the Fittest is Darwinian. If a trait isn’t useful, evolution will weed it out. Black’s is “might makes right” - if I’m able to defeat you, we do what I want.

Green Enchantments

New 22 Dec 2015 Asked by slimonz 28 Comments

Has green gone away from having powerful, interesting enchantments? Like Sylvan Library (out of colour pie, I know), Survival of the Fittest, Aluren, Pattern of Rebirth, etc? Seems like a space green used to play in that it doesn't any more...

Green is still allowed access to powerful, in color pie, enchantments.

Green's Philosophical Concepts

New 12 Aug 2015 Asked by aazadan 37 Comments

How does green reconcile the contradictions of destiny and survival of the fittest? One suggests complacency and acceptance of whatever happens while the other involves a struggle to be the best.

Those two ideas do not contradict.

Card Creation Background

New 16 Jun 2015 Asked by deathbybaconess 23 Comments

My birthday was a few days ago. Sadly, I think my request for trivia was buried, but here goes another try! Do you have any trivia on Survival of the Fittest?

I made the card because I love utility belt style decks (lots of one of’s that you go get when you need them).

Color of Disease

New 16 May 2015 Asked by imperialgrunt 18 Comments

Isn't disease green? It's part of the natural cycle, it believes in growth and survival of the fittest (evolves etc)

Disease is Black and Green but leaning more towards Black because if its association with Death.

Ultron's Color Analysis

New 03 May 2015 Asked by revadr 27 Comments

So, in the movie, Ultron has a very clear and obvious blue element to his personality. He talks a lot about evolution, regrowth, and survival of the fittest, and claims he's doing what he does for the benefit of humanity, but personally I don't really see any green or white in him (except maybe his obsession with wrath of god effects). What color(s) do you peg him as?

In the movie, he’s probably Blue/Black, maybe Blue/Black/Red.

Green Cards Design

What other awesome green cards have you designed? Green Sun's Zenith? Protean Hulk? Oath of Druids?

Doubling Season. Deranged Hermit, Tooth and Nail, Survival of the Fittest, and Garruk Wildspeaker off the top of my head.

Term 187 Explanation

New 21 Jun 2014 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 24 Comments

To further clarify, the term "187" started being used around the era of the Survival of the Fittest/Recurring Nightmare standard deck, when many of the creatures with ETB abilities used were those that killed something upon entering play, like Nekrataal and Ukatabi Orangatang.

That is correct. I should stress that while I am trying to help explain Magic slang, I want to point out that this particularly slang is upsetting to some people and something like ETB (for “enter the battlefield”) is probably a better choice.

Timmy Johnny Definition

New 24 Apr 2014 Asked by masterhelion 58 Comments

Two of my friend have been auguring on whether one of them is a Timmy or a Johnny, so we are turning to you to end it. He has a Commander deck that uses Survival of the Fittest and Elvish Piper to play any creature in the deck. She says because he is using a combo that makes him a Johnny. He says that the combo is meaningless and that, he simply enjoys the feeling of playing all his creatures from the deck. Please Maro your our only hope.

Psychographics are about why you play. Using a combo doesn’t make you a Johnny. Wanting to use Magic as a means to express yourself makes you a Johnny. I rule your friend is a Timmy. Court is now adjourned.

Color Pie Swap Hypothetical

New 31 Jan 2014 Asked by deathbyneutrino-blog 51 Comments

If, say gun to your head, you were forced to permanently swap two colors' position on the color pie, then philosophically justify the change; what two colors would you swap and why?

Why is my life constantly threatened or worse I’m forced to eat bananas so often hypothetically in questions on Blogatog?  The color pie is a thing of beauty so the real answer is that this couldn’t be done with any real effectiveness. That said, if I have to, I guess I swap black and red making black/green allies and black/blue enemies. Black/green bonds around a shared Survival of the Fittest mentality and black/blue argue over perfection versus pollution - blue is trying to make it self better while black keeps giving up things, and thus downgrading itself, to gain power.

Survival Theme Color Alignment

New 18 Jan 2014 Asked by silpheed-tandy 23 Comments

is the concept of "Survival of the Fittest" really Green? I always thought it was Black, not Green?

It’s the natural order. It’s pretty green.

Future of Birthing Pod

New 27 Jun 2012 Asked by theheadiestbrah-blog 3 Comments

I think it's fair to say Birthing Pod is widely accepted as a very strong card with regard to both flavor and power level. It's functionality, in the vein of Natural Order/Food Chain/Survival of the Fittest seems to be a relatively recurrent aspect of Green's slice of the pie. I imagine that due to Birthing Pod's Phyrexian mana cost it will likely never see an exact reprint, but with it's success would you venture to say that we are likely to see a functional reprint perhaps sooner than later?

You’ll notice a trend in Magic’s history that we tend to riff designs off of popular cards. Birthing Pod lovers, take heart - I’m sure we will riff off its design one day.
