Strixhaven: School of Mages

Educational Aspect of Exponential Growth

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by sparkvalk 82 Comments

It's maybe a bit late but I want to say that "Exponential Growth/STX" was a great card from an educational perspective.People intuitively believe that the 2^0 = 0 which is wrong. But thanks to this card, we can intuitively understand the fact that the 2^0 = 1.Education is in the perfect form if it's fun and enjoyable. I'd love to see more cards like this.

Yachting (return to Strixhaven) will have more math cards. : )

Set Naming Criteria

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by thunderweb 29 Comments

Some set names don't include the plane name where the set takes place. (such as WAR, STX, BRO, MOM, and MKM)Can you tell me when/how/why it happens?

It depends if the focus is on the environment of the world or something else.

Evolution of Set Names

New 15 Jan 2024 Asked by gnommunist-organizer 62 Comments

something I noticed sorting my bulk: sets were originally called named after words like "Tempest" and "Onslaught", and now they're called verbose things like "Strixhaven: School of Mages" and "The Lost Caverns of Ixalan". do you ever see Magic having another one-word set name (that isn't the name of a new plane)?

Our current philosophy is that the theme is clearly communicated through the name, which makes one-word names harder to use.

Strixhaven Birthday Trivia

New 08 Jan 2024 Asked by justletmereadmyoldblog 52 Comments

Invoking my God-given right to birthday trivia on this January the 8th. I would like something about Strixhaven and ideally any of the following: the card Expressive Iteration, the Witherbloom faction, or the secret ally-colored archetypes in STX draft.

Witherbloom was the first college to get its field of study. Originally it was “soft” sciences like biology and blue/red was “hard” sciences like physics. When Prismari became art, Witherbloom became just science. Happy Birthday!

Quintorius Evolution

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by thunderweb 25 Comments

Can you tell me since when Quintorius was planned to become a planeswalker?a) during the development of STXb) somewhere between a) and c)c) during the development of MOM

I believe b).

Draft Archetype Balance

New 16 Sep 2023 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 49 Comments

Hi Mark, I want to register my disappointment that it seems like whenever there's an unusual/unique draft archetype in recent sets, it's almost always severely underpowered. UW tap in WOE, UG scry in LTR, and UG transform in MOM are the three most recent sets and all follow this pattern. Moving back a little further, the RW Lorehold graveyard theme in STX and RG werewolves in MID are also good examples. Can you pass along that limited players would like to see weird themes pushed a little more?

When you’re working with something you’re unfamilar with, it’s a lot riskier to push power levels, because you have no idea exactly what power level you’re at. With themes we’re familiar with we have a better ability to pinpoint where we think they’ll end up. As we repeat themes, it becomes easier to push them appropriately.

Strixhaven Trivia

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by lanabutnotdelray 37 Comments

Hi mark! I would like to invoke my birthday trivia for my favorite set, Strixhaven: School of Mages!

The set was supposed to be the premier for MDFC’s, but we liked them so much, we spread them across three sets.Happy Birthday!

Lorehold Reception Analysis

New 22 Jul 2023 Asked by armeizh 40 Comments

Hi Mark, the mention of Lorehold in STX being "disorienting" surprises me a bit. In the arguably pretty dedicated/enfranchised spaces I frequent, people were overall excited about a new approach and the poor reception came from the low power level of the cards, especially how much work was asked for worse payoffs than other colleges/themes. eg. "I wanted it to be good but drafting classic RW aggro works better". Was confusion frequently quoted by the less involved sections of limited players?

Enfranchised frequent drafters usually love when we do something different from the norm. The more casual/average drafters tend to reject formats they find disorienting. The classic example is Rise of the Eldrazi. The hard core drafters adored it, but it got very low marks overall.

Bonus Sheets Showcase Usage

New 29 Apr 2023 Asked by crowes-nest 20 Comments

The previous two sets with bonus sheets (STX and BRO) didn't have showcase frames in the main set; instead the mystical archive frame/retro frame was only used for cards on the bonus sheet. MOM however does feature showcase frames for both cards from the main set and cards on the bonus sheet. Going forward, should we expect sets with bonus sheets to also use the showcase frame in the main set, or was MOM the exception?

It can vary based on the needs of the set.

Themes in Sets

New 18 Mar 2023 Asked by yaamzie-deactivated20230318 45 Comments

Re: American themes in UNF and STXIs this necessarily a bad thing? I don’t necessarily look at “deep cuts” from Kamigawa or Amonkhet and say “that’s offputting how they have primarily Japanese/Egyptian flavor in their set”, I look at it as a cool nod and opportunity to learn about another culture/tradition. Isn’t including some American tropes in one or two particular sets a similar thing?

The issue is that other places have colleges and carnivals. It’s not as if we were doing a Native American set that focuses on specifically American things.

Study Mechanic Suggestion

New 28 Feb 2023 Asked by gevth 19 Comments

I recently read the “Strixhaven Vision Design Handoff Document”. You mentioned an unused mechanic, “Study” (I’ll add your example at the end of this question).May I suggest it for the next time you use keyword counters prominently, like in Ikoria? From the STX Vision design handoff document:StudyGuardian Ancestor1WCreature — Spirit2/22: Study. Activate this ability only when you could cast a sorcery.(A) Spirits you control have vigilance.(B) T: Another target creature you control gains protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.

We don’t need study to let you choose between two keyword counters.

Sagas Usage Increase

New 11 Nov 2022 Asked by wildcardgamez 57 Comments

After 10 months of watching this blog and asking questions, I'd like to invoke birthday trivia! My favorite card type is sagas, and I try to fit some into every deck I make. I watch a lot of your DTWs, and one thing I remembered was that sets like ELD, ZNR, and STX also had pushes for sagas in them but they didn't get too far. Is there anything you can say about those? If not, some trivia on the foretell mechanic would suffice.

We liked Sagas, but were worried about making them too often, so we limited how often we used them. As time has gone by and it’s clear the audience is comfortable with us doing more of them, we’ve upped how often they get used. The fact that so many sets wanted to use them was very telling though.Happy Birthday!

WH40K Deck Praise

New 16 Sep 2022 Asked by ghostlygideon 38 Comments

These WH40K decks are blowing my mind, I've never been so happy to have blindly pre-ordered a whole pod of precons (and STX and SNC made me pretty happy)! 42 new cards, my nerd heart sings with joy at the answer to life, the universe, and everyWarhammer deck! High fives to the design team for excellently crafting interesting competitive decks with perfect fit reprints! High fives to the creative team for all the amazing new art and flavor text! I've always loved the idea of Warhammer, but never had time/money to get into it so extra shout out to Loading Ready Run and MTGmudstah for diving into the lore alongside their full deck previews. Do you think it would be possible to get more of this type of "but what is this thing?" analysis for future UB product previews?

Glad you’re so excited. I assume we’ll do similar things with future Universes Beyond.

Forbidden Mechanic vs Learn/Lesson

New 09 Mar 2022 Asked by j-waffles 31 Comments

The scrapped “forbidden” mechanic from AVR sounds similar to “learn/lesson” from STX, but the lessons were all *weaker* than normal cards, not stronger. Was “learn/lesson” based on forbidden, or am I just drawing connections where there aren’t any?

Lessons were actually a riff on inventions, a mechanic from Kaladesh that we didn’t end up using. While there are some similarities (getting things from outside your deck), they played very differently.

Possibility of STX Archetypes Recurrence

New 28 Feb 2022 Asked by zorroaburrito 29 Comments

Clarifying about STX themes: forgive me, archetypes is probably a better word. I was just asking if things like Golgari lifegain and other unique archetypes from STX could happen elsewhere, or if they were considered an Arcavios thing. I really enjoyed the takes on Boros and Golgari

They are not locked to Arcavios, but the flavor has to make sense and I don’t think we’d use the same flavor on another world.

Potential for STX Themes Repetition

New 27 Feb 2022 Asked by zorroaburrito 17 Comments

Are the themes explored in STX locked in to Arcavios? Or could we see them elsewhere?

Which themes are you talking about?

Variation in Planeswalker Quantity

New 03 Sep 2021 Asked by horchestra-blog 30 Comments

As you mentioned 3 planeswalker per set, is there a reason why KHM and STX got 4 (while still 3 in ZNR)?

I think the average is actually three and a half.

Standard Rotation and Innistrad Sets

New 03 Sep 2021 Asked by cardiclon 33 Comments

I’m sorry mark but i’m still confused about the two Innistrad sets and size of standard thing. So, the next standard season will have 5 sets (MID, AFR, STX, KHM, & ZNR). 1 year from now when The Brother’s War releases, standard will rotate and have 6 sets (Brother’s War, Dom United, New Capena, Kamigawa, Crimson Vow, & Midnight Hunt). Is this incorrect? p.s. the new day/night mechanic looks awesome and i loved reading the design history in your new article

Dominaria United is the first set of the new season (akin to Midnight Hunt), and when it rotates Standard, there will be five sets in Standard. Brother’s War will come out two months later (like Crimson Vow).

Managing Multiple Set Releases

New 08 May 2021 Asked by armeizh 82 Comments

Hi Mark, the comment on Offroading coming in 2.5 years, and all the asks about STX, MH2, AFR, and phyrexians at the same time made me wonder: does it get overwhelming to handle both what you're working on, and what's coming out, at all times?

It is. For example, here are sets that I have to care about (at various levels) right now: Modern Horizons 2, Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Hockey, Ice Skating, Judo, Kayaking, Lacrosse, Marathon, Netball and Offroading. In addition, we’re doing preliminary work on the next couple years. It’s lot to process. On the plus side, I’ve lived this life for a long time, so I’m used to it.

Planeswalker Disability Representation

New 06 May 2021 Asked by ofelementsandartifice 133 Comments

Do you think we can get a planeswalker with a physical disability for some representation?
Killian (the uncommon from STX) knows how to sign (kind of) but we don't have a deaf planeswalker to my knowledge.

We obviously can have more, but we do have some. Daretti is in a wheelchair.Tezzerett is missing an arm. Narset is neuro-atypical.
