Improved? Siege Rhino isn’t good enough? : )

Siege Rhino Reprint

Hi Mark. Happy Halloween. I miss Siege Rhino. May it see a reprint in Standard please?

I’m not a play designer, but I’m skeptical it’s returning to Standard.

Siege Rhino Possibilities

Can siege rhino be in a non tarkir set?

A supplemental set? For sure. Another world? Maybe, but it would be tricky.

Siege Rhino Pun

Pun Siege Rhino, if you don't mind. We've taken to just saying Siege Rhinoceres as it's silly name.

Rhino Nasty. : )

Siege Rhino Creation

Who designed Siege rhino?

Development designed it. I’m not sure specifically who.

Design vs Development

New 03 Apr 2016 Asked by mathhombre 18 Comments

Your quip about development's Siege Rhino made me wonder: what % of a typical set is design vs. what is development? Does that percentage vary much from set to set?

It can vary quite a bit. It has to do with what changes in development.

Siege Rhino Trivia

New 01 Apr 2016 Asked by trifas 63 Comments

Tomorrow is the last FNM with Siege Rhino as a legal card. Can you share any trivia on this so much loved/hated Abzan card?

Siege Rhino was not made in design but development. Bye, bye Siege Rhino.

Megamorph Cycle Praise

New 17 Mar 2016 Asked by henro88 34 Comments

The cycle of 1C 2/1 creatures with evasion and Megamorph were actually incredibly well-designed cards, and extremely useful. The problem is that the only one that remotely competes with Siege Rhino is the one in Siege Rhino colors! Once Rhino rotates out, the rare Megamorph cycle will definitely see a lot more play because they really honestly are VERY good cards.

I agree.

Reality Smasher Design

New 14 Mar 2016 Asked by jainmor 30 Comments

I have a bet, can you ask someone in development if Reality Smasher was given 5 thoughness so it could survive siege rhino please? : )

Sam Stoddard says “No.”

Promo System Preferences

New 01 Feb 2016 Asked by mediasresreviews 24 Comments

I like the Promo system currently in place where any card can be a pre-release promo. A lot of people who play non-rotating decks (Modern Legacy Commander, ESPECIALLY Commander) like to 'bling out' decks with foils, alters, and promos. There are fewer people out there who want a promo Prism array than who want a promo Siege Rhino, but we exist.

I’ve had a lot of people post things similar to this.

Siege Rhino Strength

Mark, is Siege Rhino too strong for standard?

Not a developer but yeah.

Development Card Design

Some cards like siege rhino are made during development. From a 280 set, about how many cards are designed by development?

Varies wildly.

Third Un-set Journey

New 08 Dec 2015 Asked by the-memelight-district 45 Comments

Okay Mark, let's address the Siege Rhino in the room. What do we have to do to make the third un-set happen?

Convince the Powers That Be that there’s a large enough audience.

Siege Rhino's Colors

New 31 Oct 2015 Asked by asw122 31 Comments

On the subject of siege rhino - what is the white in the card? Feels like a green black card. Green for a large, efficient creature, black for a drain effect. The white however eludes me.

Black is the life loss and White is the life gain. I guess.

Siege Rhino Query

New 31 Oct 2015 Asked by heshotmeagain 24 Comments

Could siege rhino have what he has for (g)(4)

No, Green doesn’t drain players (or creatures for that matter).

Format Warping Concerns

New 29 Oct 2015 Asked by emilthehuman 48 Comments

What does R&D fear more: a card being over powered and warping standard (such as siege rhino), or a card being over powered and warping older formats (dig and cruise)

The former. Older formats have active ban lists to solve issues.

Lightning Bolt Collection

New 11 Oct 2015 Asked by bfbonatto 69 Comments

Its my birthday!! Can I please have some trivia on the most awesome red card ever printed: Lightning Bolt? Or if you don't have any, trivia on the most awesome creature ever printed: Siege Rhino.

There is a man named Mike Donais who used to work in Magic R&D as a developer for many years. One if Mike’s claims to fame was he had a collection of a copy of every Lightning Bolt ever printed, every variation, every printing, every language. I personally helped him acquire one from a printing that we never released. Happy Birthday!

Siege Rhino Rotation

New 16 Sep 2015 Asked by deetsposts 47 Comments

It hasn't even been a year and we're all sick of that stupid rhino already. When does it rotate out?

Khans rotates out when “Tears” rotates in. From that point on, no card will ever be in Standard as long as Siege Rhino (except cards released in multiple sets near each other). EDIT: Oops. I got my math wrong. Siege Rhino is in the first set to be in Standard for 18 months.

Siege Rhino Design Approach

New 13 Jun 2015 Asked by i-am-the-king-of-garbage 15 Comments

Is Siege rhino top down or the opposite? I may be confused by that terminology and the whole concept of design.

The mechanics came before the flavor do it was bottom up design not top down (where flavor is where you start from).
