Richard Garfield's Ingenious Ideas

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by remasuri 2 Comments

Hi Mark, Is there an Article or Podcast about how exactly Richard Garfield came up with the ideas? Especially basic lands, one Land per turn rule or the idea of tapping things for use? I mostly like the idea of having 5 colors and the more colors you play the harder it is to cast the right cards on time, that is the perfect system of keeping people out of playing all the best cards in the same deck most of the time.

Here’s the podcast with Richard where I ask about decisions he made in Alpha:

Richard Garfield's Intent on Design

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by khyrberos 7 Comments

Just listened to your Blue Sky Design episode, & you touch on the concept of not considering all early game design decisions as "precedents" (e.g. Black's inability to deal with Black creatures, ala Terror). You mention that this was "not what Richard Garfield intended"; my question is, was that something Richard himself said? Or was it simply the decision you guys made (to discard it as precedent)?

I spent a lot of time asking Richard about intent (back in the day when Richard worked at Wizards), and the vast majority of the time the answer was “that was meant for the flavor of that specific card and not intended for all cards of that color”.

Insights on Absorb Mechanic Designs

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by mytheralmin 28 Comments

Hello, I heard something interesting about MH3 where you retried EVERY mechanic to see what would work with a new context or be interesting. You (WoTC) revisited many of my favorite mechanics like grandeur but didn't for probably my favorite. That mechanic is absorb, and while it has only been keyworded on one card "Lymph Sliver" it did see a continuation on my favorite card of all "Valkmira, Protector's Shield" alongside what would only a few sets later become ward. I wanted to know if you could share any insights on the designs taken with absorb or any other of your favorite mechanics? Thank you very much for your time.

I designed Lymph Sliver and absorb. If I remember correctly, I was riffing off of a shield mechanic from the Star Wars TCG. (It was a trading card game design lead by Richard Garfield that I was on the initial design team for.)

Phelddagrif Origin Story

New 22 May 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 8 Comments

Hi Mark! I hope this allowed, my friend who isn't on Tumblr has asked me to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia on his behalf. Could you share any insights concerning Phelddagrif? Thanks in advance!

Phelddagrif was an inside joke in R&D. It’s an anagram of “Garfield Ph.D.” referencing a rule in the early days that whenever PR talked about Richard, they always called him Dr. Richard Garfield or Richard Garfield, Ph.D. R&D also used to joke about how long before they’d have to make a purple hippo. All this resulted in the card Phelddagrif.Happy Birthday to your friend!

Richard Garfield PhD Rules

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by justletmereadmyoldblog 31 Comments

Apologies if you've answered this but I couldn't find an official un-ruling: in a game of commander, can I use Richard Garfield, PhD's ability to play a card as a copy of another card already in my deck or does that violate the "must be legal in the format" rule on the grounds that a second copy of any card is not legal in commander? This is the same question as asking if, in ordinary constructed, his effect can duplicate a card that you already have four of in your deck.

He is not limited by deck construction rules. He can make a card into a copy of a card in your deck.

On Flavor Fails

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 96 Comments

Regarding "flavor fails" I'd like to share an excerpt from the Alpha rulebook's Q&A segment:
"Q: Can my opponent do something that doesn't make much sense, such as casting both Holy Strength and Unholy Strength on his Air Elemental?"
A: Yes, these effects are magical, after all." "Flavor fails" are canonically "as Garfield intended"! :)

What's your hunch on how solidly acorn Richard Garfield, PhD is? Like on a scale of Uktabi Kong to More or Less, which is he closer to?

Very solidly.

Richard Garfield Collaboration

New 20 Feb 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 24 Comments

What was your favorite set to work with Richard Garfield on and any chance he'll be on a new set anytime soon?

I enjoy all the sets I get to work with Richard on. If I had to pick one, it was probably Tempest as it was the first set we worked on together and I was so excited to have him on my design team.

Un-cards Power Nine

New 18 Feb 2024 Asked by rocketknightgeek 40 Comments

Discounting Blacker Lotus and Gleemox, what would you consider the silver border/acorn 'power nine' to be?

The most powerful Un-card is Richard Garfield PhD, but I don’t know the whole top nine.

Doctor Typing Errata

We use the creature type Doctor to mean physician and not just someone with any type of doctorate.

Origin of Danger Room

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by bardakus 52 Comments

Whats the danger room?

Two offices back, Richard Garfield was given an office, but he just wanted to sit in The Pit, so he turned into a room we could playtest in or have meetings. It wasn’t officially in the system for meeting rooms, so only R&D would use it. He called it The Danger Room after the place the X-men practice using their powers. Each new office has had a Danger Room.

Potential Vanity Cards

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by rez-z 44 Comments

If/when: Are we going to see the great Mark Rosewater depicted in Magic card form? Whether something like we got for Richard Garfield, or at least a card that very obviously represents you?

If. We currently have a rule against vanity cards.

Gunk Mechanic Test

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by zibus 47 Comments

Have you guys ever tried a mechanic where you shuffle some kind of token or unwanted card into your opponent's library?

We did. Richard Garfield actually made it. It was called gunk. It’s just not particularly fun.

Silver vs Black Border

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by themrbobz 35 Comments

Hi mark, weird question, but I was discussing potential bleed of silver border and black border. Would Garth One-Eyes ruling allow for something similar to a Richard Garfield, Ph.D to work within the rules? Or something modified like simply naming a magic card name and casting a copy?

Richard Garfield not being eternal-legal is more than just a rules issue. Cards that require an extensive knowledge of thousands of cards is not something we want to inflict on tournament play.

Errata for Doctor Type

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by bungo-underhill 40 Comments

Any chance we see errata adding the doctor creature type to older creatures? Goblin Medic, Goblin Chirurgeon, Richard Garfield, Ph.D.?

I don’t think there are plans. Also, Richard is not a medical doctor. : )
