Reverberate Vs. Arcane Rule

New 17 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 26 Comments

How come “wheel fortune but it’s arcane” isn’t allowed because of the RL, but reverberate is?

We technically shouldn’t have made Reverberate. We realized that after we printed it, but as it was done we decided to let it be. One mistake does not allow other mistakes.

Reverberate and Green Sun's Zenith

If i reverberate my green sun's zenith do i have to shuffle 4 times? :)

I believe one shuffle is acceptable for numerous back-to-back shuffles (with nothing happening in between).

Reserved List Confusions

New 16 Dec 2021 Asked by darkelder-blog1 40 Comments

Hi, considering what you posted on the "Fork ./. Reverberate" issue (your post id 173202717833 of Apr 22, 2018) how did the "Roc of Kher Ridges ./. Moonveil Regent" happen? I know it's not identical, but even strictly better (a better flyer than a 3/3 for 3R mana without negative effects, like e.g. on Flailing Manticore). In the "spirit of the RL" that should have been caught prior to releasing the Moonveil Regent, right? Cheers.

The Reserved List doesn’t mean we can’t make better cards than cards on the Reserved List. The Fork/Reverberate is about making an almost identical card.

Reserved Cards in Other Colors

New 28 Dec 2020 Asked by lbolt187 52 Comments

In regards to the Drop of Honey, you colorshifted it to white in porphyry nodes. Why were people not upset about that in comparison to Reverberate? Seems a clear violation of the spirit of the reserve list.

The Reserved List says you can’t print that exact card. That card in another color is completely fair game.

Deafening Silence Critique

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by peaceloveexplosives 45 Comments

I detest Deafening Silence as someone who likes noncreature spells and spells that copy other spells. Considering many of those copy effects are in Red - e.g. Increasing Vengeance, Fork, Reverberate - which has absolutely no recourse in-color to deal with enchantments (like Deafening Silence), it feels like it majorly hoses those types of fun red cards and is very uninteractive where it has that effect. To balance this with something positive, Fervent Champion is delightful.

Magic shines because it makes a wide variety of threats and a wide variety of answers. One of the downsides of playing a monocolor deck is you are more vulnerable to certain threats as not every color has every answer,

Red Copying Mechanics

New 06 Nov 2018 Asked by thecurioustale 22 Comments

The talk about the downside of tutoring (repetitive gameplay) got me thinking: My favorite effect in red is copying (with cards like Reverberate), but it's almost always at rare. Does that mean copying has a downside too? If so, what is it?

The ability is at rare because it’s something that is rare in effect, aka it isn’t supposed to happen all that often.

Reverberate's Status

New 22 Jun 2018 Asked by unadulteratedobjectpainter 30 Comments

I know you said Reverberate was too close to Fork and thus broken the spirit of RL. Does that mean Reverbereate is now kind of on a virtual RL?

No. What’s done is done.

Legacy Vintage Support

New 22 Apr 2018 Asked by parkerlewis31884 17 Comments

Hi Mark ! Would you guys consider doing what you did with Fork/Reverberate to other cards to help out Legacy/Vintage players (in a relevant supplemental set obviously, and just as obviously, probably not for every card but for as much as realistically possible) ? If the answer is yes, can we send you (even general) tweak suggestions (trying to steer away from unsolicited designs) ?

By our own rules, we shouldn’t have done Reverberate (although we accepted the damage is done on that one) and thus aren’t going to further break the rules we set out.

Reserve List Alternatives

New 15 Nov 2015 Asked by jokey665 19 Comments

I know how you feel about Fork vs Reverberate with regard to the Reserve List, but how about Juzam Djinn vs Plague Sliver? Could we see more Plague Sliver-esque attempts at reserved cards?

Those are allowable, but not something we plan to do a lot.

Spell Copy Similarity

New 13 Mar 2014 Asked by howler13 21 Comments

Both Blue and Red are able to copy instants and sorceries, and at about the same efficacy (given the fairly recent reprintings of Twincast and Reverberate). Any thoughts put into distinguishing these two, or are you fine with the overlap?

It happens infrequently enough that we’re okay with the overlap.

Reserve List Loophole

New 22 Nov 2013 Asked by zennithgp 13 Comments

What was the rationale for circumventing the reserved list for FtV: Relics, Powder Keg's MPR printing, and Judge Gift cards (to say nothing of Reverberate)? I'm not complaining, just wondering how much wiggle room we can expect in the future.

We used to make use of a loophole using premium versions of the cards. That went over poorly so we closed the loophole.

True-Name Nemesis Clarification

New 31 Oct 2013 Asked by tsumiband-blog 10 Comments

"All permanents can affect [True-Name Nemesis]. It’s not strictly better than protection from color(s)." :( No, the reminder text says 'anything controlled by that player'. And it's unfortunate Tabak says 'your own Earthquake kills it'. (1) 'Pyroclasm effects + pro-red' hasn't been viable for years in Legacy (2) That kind of hairsplitting is not applied equally to all cards (Reverberate v Fork much?). Look, it's not *broken*, it just tops White's protection in the most important ways.

As always, I should not answer rules questions. I made assumptions rather than reading the card.

Reserve List Loophole

New 08 Oct 2013 Asked by dancesubomp-blog 11 Comments

Hey - while we're talking about the "spirit of the Reserve List", does printing Reverberate when Fork is on the list break that? Only difference is that Fork makes the spell Red. Kinda feels like a loophole to me (not complaining, by the way)

It’s something we did that crosses a line we no longer cross.

Reserved List Policy

New 08 Jun 2013 Asked by myonlyfathersson 5 Comments

On the reserved list topic: What about Fork vs. reverberate? Or Blaze of Glory vs. Valor Made Real? I can understand that something might care about Fork's copies being red, but Valor Made Real seems strictly better than Blaze of Glory? It seems clear that mechanically-identical functional reprints of reserved cards have already been done.

Yes, there was a time when we were thinking about phasing it out so we experimented with coming closer to the line. That experiment failed miserably so know we’re towing a wider line.

Reverberate vs. Fork

New 26 Apr 2013 Asked by mediocreman5-blog-blog 7 Comments

You often talk about how the spirit of the reserved list is just as important to uphold as the letter, which makes sense and I can appreciate it even though I hate the RL. So why, then is Reverberate perfectly okay to print in every core set while Fork is on the list? They're the exact same card with the only difference being the removal of the "the copy is red" clause. It seems like if that's fine to print, other "loophole" cards should be too.

Over the years, R&D tried slowly doing away with the list and as part of that pushed the line in a few places. Once it became clear the list was staying, we stopped doing that, but we’ve allowed ourselves to keep the cards we made along the way. Essentially, those cards got grandfathered in.

Fork-like Effects Frequency

New 06 Apr 2013 Asked by thefirewarde 12 Comments

As far as mechanics go, as a red mage, I love Fork/Reverberate. Can I hope to see more effects in that line as a recurring red thing? It just fits so well (IMHO - I yield to your Color Pie Culinary Arts).

We do them on regularity. Do you want them done even more often?

Copy Effects Rarity

New 29 Nov 2012 Asked by eyeball-frog 4 Comments

Why are copy effects like Clone or Reverberate always rare? Are they too complex for uncommon, or is there another reason?

Time has shown that rare suits them best (for both limited concerns and complexity).

Reserved List Query

New 22 Sep 2012 Asked by kingdavidofisrael 5 Comments

If Fork is on the reserved list, why is Reverberate okay? I know they're not exactly the same but it seems like basically a functional reprint.

It was created at a time when we were a little looser with how we handled the Reserve List. As it’s a done deal, we use it, but I don’t feel like we’re going to be doing that in present day.

Common Rarity Mechanics

New 03 Aug 2012 Asked by tablegames-blog-blog 2 Comments

To quote one of your most common phrases, "if your theme isn't in common, it's not your theme." How does this statement apply to red and it's issues with mechanics at common? Obviously not every mechanic can be placed at every rarity, but maybe by expanding the common presence of certain of red's higher rarity mechanics (Shunt/Reverberate) in a similar way to how counterspells are handled at common will allow people to get the feeling that these effects are part of red's broader identity.

The problem is those mechanics just aren’t common mechanics. Also, regarding my quote, those effects are not supposed to be red’s most defining effect, direct damage is- and that’s all over common.
