Hybrid Mana Cards Correlation

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 5 Comments

People have complained about not having enough cards to fill out colors for limited with the switch to play boosters and I've started noticing an uptick in hybrid mana cards which would be a solution to this problem. Is this correlated, or is it just a coincidence that we've recently seen more hybrid and that it helps address this issue?

It’s correlated.

Seeding Sets and Block Monsters

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by msandbot 9 Comments

In Bloomburrow's design am I seeing the needle move slightly back towards "block monsters" (iirc named after the Goblins and other ilk of Onslaught)? It is clear that you are still seeding prior and subsequent sets, but has there been a push to put more strong themed cards together in a set? This might be more noticible with the creature type focus or due to the set ushering in rotation.

The change away from blocks and towards play boosters (two different forces) has allowed us to focus more power of a theme into a single set than we used to.

Transition to Value Boosters

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by marlarkey01 12 Comments

Hey Mark, why was it decided to remove the draft and set the booster because of confusion amongst them, but putting value booster is better, is supposed to be a support for pauper/pauper commander?

You’re conflating two things that have nothing to do with one another. Draft boosters went away because the majority of the audience preferred set boosters. Play boosters were a way to keep the essence of set boosters while still providing limited play. All of that is mostly centered in local game stores. Value boosters are addressing a need of certain mass market stores to have Magic boosters at a lower price point. They are not a product the vast majority of enfranchised players will ever interact with, and their existence has nothing to do with organized play.

Draft Boosters Removal Feedback

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by sickosickofruit 32 Comments

Hey Mark just wanted to say that the news about the new "value boosters" feels like a kick in the teeth as someone who has had to give up drafting as often as I used to enjoy because of the removal of draft boosters increase in costs (not to mention how that affected how limited plays). I'm all for having more afforable ways to interact with this game obviously, but when you tell me that I can't play draft at the price point I could afford before because they were too niche to sell then follow up by releasing a new niche pack type I can't help but feel betrayed. I love this game and I love how fun limited has been in recent years just wish something similar to draft boosters (which was already a budget version of our new play boosters) could have been a priority.

Not enough players wanted to buy the draft booster. That’s why it went away. It was nothing nefarious. We can only sell something that there’s a large enough market for.The value booster is an attempt to solve a completely different problem. There are a lot of stores that want a lower priced Magic booster option, so we’re experimenting with something for them. If there isn’t an audience for it, this too will go away. The two boosters are quite different from one another and serve very different audiences.

Issues in Play Boosters

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by guardmanxl 23 Comments

Mark, I play a lot of limited and one thing I've noticed with the new play boosters is that it is no longer guaranteed to have a card of every color in it. This is especially glaring in a set like MKM or MH3 with multicolored commons. In MH3 especially, since there are no colorless commons, I've opened several packs where it is missing a color and the only cards in my other color are multicolored, meaning I basically don't get a 1st pick. Is this a known problem? Is anything being done about it?

The collation only allows us to guarantee four colors and not five.

Complexity and New World Order

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by dude1818 3 Comments

Does R&D still think in terms of NWO? How has that changed with play boosters?

Elements of New World Order live on, but we have increased the complexity at common a bit.

Reprints of Secret Lair Exclusives

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by izzet-always-r-versus-u 4 Comments

Any news on reprints of secret lair exclusives? After the initial few SLX runs, exclusives without non-lair reprints have started to pile up again (Honor Among Thieves, Doctor Who, Lara Croft, Arden Angel). Did the switch from Set Boosters to Play Boosters affect getting these out in the wild at all, and if so, is there a new solution in place yet?

Play boosters have added some new challenges to work through.

Face Commanders in MH3 Booster

I did in fact like opening face commanders in MH3 play boosters. Thanks for that :)

You’re welcome.

MH3's Face Commanders in Boosters

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by onecentpenny 22 Comments

Why was the decision made for the face commanders of mh3 to be in play boosters?

I assume because we thought enough players would like being able to open them.

Commander Cards in Play Boosters

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 8 Comments

Amid the endless positivity I have towards MH3, I do have oThe presence of Commander cards in play boosters. Its a bit soul crushing when I buy a pack that is more expensive than a regular standard pack, and it has a card in it I can't even use in my Modern deck. I've not hidden the fact I dislike that Modern Horizons has Commander precons attached to them. But its also really frustrating when the Modern Horizons packs themselves have cards in them that you can't even use.

It’s a fine note. How do others feel? Do you only want cards in the pack that are legal in Modern, or would you like access to all the new designs in the product suite inside the booster?

Impact of Play Boosters

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by battle-of-wits 20 Comments

Does the fact that play boosters have the opportunity for more rares impact what cards you print at rare and mythic for limited purposes? One of the MKM packs I opened for a draft recently had 4 different blue rares in it.

We’re designing sets such that common and uncommon have more answers to the rares and mythic rares.

Marvel Products Information

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by zackdes44 2 Comments

What information is publicly available about the Marvel products? All I can find is that there will be Marvel products. Do we know what products (play boosters, commander decks, secret lairs, etc) will be made or a schedule for any of it?

The only news about it is the partnership exists and it will be for multiple sets.

Pack Collation Improvements

New 23 May 2024 Asked by ganymederise 4 Comments

I know pack collation is a complicated and detailed process that most players (myself included) know little about, but after two sets of drafting play boosters, I'd like to ask if it's possible to collate them to avoid duplicate cards in a pack and ensure there is at least one card of every color per pack. Duplicate rares and packs missing a color can really mess with draft signaling, and my naive self wonders if collation is a place to improve the draft experience without harming collectors.

Ideally, packs should avoid duplicates within each pack. Duplicates within a booster box are a bit trickier to avoid. We can guarantee four out of the five colors in most packs, and five in some. We haven’t found a way in the current system to hit all five in every booster pack.

LGS Challenges with Boosters

New 18 May 2024 Asked by charble 31 Comments

Mark, today, my LGS of 24 years announced that it is closing at the end of the month because it can no longer run a profit because of Play Boosters. Since Limited was its primary revenue driver, the increased cost of running a draft, combined with the USD/CAD exchange rate and a weak economy, running the LGS became financially untenable. Charging more for draft wasn't an option. There are many similar LGS outside the US facing the same problem. Regular draft boosters served an important role.

The market was driving away draft boosters. Not enough people were buying them to justify their existence. Play boosters was us doing something to keep limited play from going away.

Fog and Multi-Blocking Future

New 16 May 2024 Asked by zopandrel 4 Comments

unless I'm mistaken, from what I Saw, fog and multi block ( one Can block many ) didn't showed much or even at all in the recent set ( at least standard legal ) will those show up again at some point or is it unlikely ?
Also, which colors might get the ability to block multiple creatures with one ? From what I Saw it was a white thing, is it specific to it or can other expect to see this effect ?

Fog is something we use pretty sparingly these days, especially in play booster world. Multi-blocking is something we stopped many years ago due to digital concerns. We already were making so few of them, and they didn’t play all that great, so giving them up wasn’t a big deal.

Design Change Effects

New 11 May 2024 Asked by owenkirby 7 Comments

Hi Mark, from what I understand about the changes in design due to play boosters. Common cards will be relying more on creatures with etb abilities. Is this a correct assessment?Thank-you

I think that might happen, due to numerous factors, but other solutions to those issues exist, so it won’t always happen.

Booster Pack Feedback

New 11 May 2024 Asked by su92 15 Comments

I might be a victim of statistics, but play boosters have felt a little rough for sealed in both MKM and OTJ (in average). Obviously it's playable, but I find myself a lot of the time short of a cool color combination by just a few more cards. (And to be clear, I mean including everything even the "bad" commons). Is this a common complaint? Is there something that can be done? Maybe a little fewer multicolored cards or fewer unplayable/unsupported cards in the bonus sheet? Maybe boosters could go back to guaranteeing one common of each color?

This isn’t a complaint I’ve been getting. Note 95% of sanctioned sealed in the world is at prereleases.

Token Slot Complexity

New 06 May 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 15 Comments

About the suggestion of a second token slot being surprisingly complicated. There was a time when there was no token/ad/minigame slot in packs. How complicated was it when the pro tour player profile cards were added then turned into the ad/token slot?

Making a draft booster is a different animal than making a set booster. The play boosters are far closer to a set booster than a draft booster, so comparing it to old draft booster executions is comparing apples and oranges.

Drafts & Play Boosters

New 06 May 2024 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 24 Comments

Maybe I am in the minority, but I previously only bought set boosters and never really cared for draft as I was primarily a constructed player. With Play Booster, I actually started to play in drafts and prereleases. So it's actually a win for me and my play group who would never play any form of limited.

I haven’t seen the data on this yet, but I believe you’re part of a larger group than you think.

Play Booster Pricing

New 06 May 2024 Asked by theothin 25 Comments

For someone buying Play Boosters as a replacement for Set Boosters, the price of a booster has not changed. For someone buying Play Boosters as a replacement for Draft Boosters, the price of a booster has increased.

You are getting something for that price increase, more rares/mythic rares per dollar spent.
