Planeswalker Deck Mechanics

New 31 Jan 2023 Asked by jjarnone-blog 28 Comments

When you use to make planeswalker intro decks you would make cards like Elspeth's Devotee that would searched out the named planeswalker from the preconstruct. Did you ever consider having those cards search out an "Elspeth planeswalker" so in theory those cards could have some application outside just that deck?

I think they were Standard legal, so we had to be careful with what they could fetch.

Planeswalker Decks Sales

New 20 Oct 2022 Asked by jjustin1379 66 Comments

You sold planeswalker decks for many years. Your numbers imply that a majority of people did not know a product that you sold for many many sets even existed. That is terrible for business. What happened there?

You vast overestimate how many planeswalker decks we sold.

Planeswalker Decks Return

New 17 Sep 2022 Asked by archfiend-of-ifnir 47 Comments

i work summers at the camp where i learned to play magic years ago, and i’d like to note that the discontinuation of planeswalker decks has really hampered our ability to introduce new players. commander is tough to explain to kids, and welcome decks aren’t anywhere near as appealing. in the future could we see pw decks return, even as a yearly or infrequent thing? nothing delights new players quite like a planeswalker

I’ll pass along the note.

Artwork of Planeswalkers Casting Spells

New 06 Jul 2022 Asked by jjustin1379 37 Comments

Can we see more spells with planeswalkers in the art casting them? I want to make all planeswalker decks where all the cards in the deck depict a specific walker?

We tend to do a few each set.

Elspeth Resplandent Design Feedback

New 08 Apr 2022 Asked by bdiasf 47 Comments

Did you know Elspeth Resplandent is the 4th monowhite planeswalker card (not counting Planeswalker Deck exclusives) with mana value 5 or greater? I love low MV monowhite PW, but I was really missing the high MV ones. Can you high-five whoever was responsible for this card design?

Will do!

Black-green Vraska

New 23 Nov 2021 Asked by forestd3w 39 Comments

We have a mono-black Vraska from a planeswalker deck. Is she core black or could we get a mono green to balance it?

She’s more black than green, but pretty black/green.

Kenrith Twins Card Mechanics

New 24 Sep 2021 Asked by yunasjet 64 Comments

If/When? A Will or a Rowan Kenrith planeswalker card that isn't mechanically linked to the other twin?

It’s kind of their schtick. Rowan did get a solo planeswalker deck card in Throne of Eldraine.

Oversized Cards Consideration

New 01 Sep 2021 Asked by kandykidzero 31 Comments

Are there any plans to make oversized cards to help with accessibility to those that would like to play but have trouble with small print? We have seen various versions in the past as well as gimmicks with "The World's Smallest" planeswalker decks a couple times. Not saying that whole sets need to be done, but some kind of product that could be made available like those.

Magic has made various oversized cards (of different sizes) over the years.

Comparing Commander and Planeswalker Decks

Hi Mark I think that the answer is obvious, but how well the new commander decks are doing when compared to the planeswalker decks they replaced?

Doing very well.

Planeswalker Spotlight Set Issues

New 06 Sep 2020 Asked by subwayray 27 Comments

I know you aren't planning to do them again for now, but could a Planeswalker in the story get a PW Deck but not be in the main set? That should alleviate set design issues while still giving the PW a spotlight for the set.

Zendikar Rising doesn’t have Planeswalker decks.

Reason for Named Planeswalker Tutoring

New 09 Aug 2020 Asked by creaky-jiki 38 Comments

Hi Mark! Is there any reason the planeswalker deck cards that tutor for the key walker like Garruk’s Warsteed and Chandra’s Outburst search for the Planeswalker by it’s name instead of by type? I always thought the cards were pretty neat, but I have never used any of them outside of the decks they come in because the walkers they come with tend to be underpowered. I changed them to type in my cube and have had a lot of success so far.

It’s done to keep the power level in check.

Green Planeswalker Print Frequency

New 09 Jul 2020 Asked by typewryter 30 Comments

re: raffyk's question, you didn't actually answer the question they asked. They felt like theres been more mono green walkers printed in recent sets than other walkers. Idk if thats true or not, and I'd love to see the stats on it if you have them, but they didnt say anything abiut there being more monogreen walkers overall.

Let’s look at recently released monocolor planeswalkers (in the last year, not counting Planeswalker deck planeswalkers):
White (2) - Basri, Elspeth
Blue (2) - Teferi, B.O.B
Black (1) - Liliana
Red (2) - Chandra, Lukka,
Green (2) - Garruk (2021), Vivien
Tied for first, but not what I would call “more”.

Reprinting Errata'd Cards

New 14 Jun 2020 Asked by grey-oppenheimer 56 Comments

MaRo, as a cube curator, may I ask you consider reprinting some errata'd cards, especially those that deal damage to "any target"? I know Volcanic Hammer isn't the most desired card out there, but maybe a Planeswalker deck can get it as a reprint?

I’ll pass the request along.

Question about Playing Magic

New 15 May 2020 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 36 Comments

Mark, how often do you get to play Magic against people that aren't WotC employees? What kinda game are they? Super Casual or pretty competitive?

I play my son and occasional play on MTG Arena. My son and Inplay Planeswalker decks or Unsanctioned. I currently just play limited on Arena.

I don’t believe so.

Jumpstart and card printing

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by su92 33 Comments

Jumpstart got me curious. Is it easier now to print boosters with more than 15 cards? Or is jumpstart being printed more like a fixed set of cards (like a planeswalker deck, for example)?

Anytime we print something we haven’t done before, it’s a new printing challenge.

Fate's Impact on Sets

New 15 Nov 2019 Asked by lookingupanddown 69 Comments

If R&D had known about Dack Fayden's fate, would he have gotten a card in the set proper, replaced Tezzeret as the Buy-A-Box promo, or been the face of a planeswalker deck?

He would have been in or connected to the set had we known.

Limited Play Time

New 31 Oct 2019 Asked by theloganite 42 Comments

I know Commander politics keeps you out of it normally, but have you tried 1v1 Brawl or Commander at all? If you have time between killing Magic and world domination, of course

Besides other factors, I don’t have much time out of the office to play Magic. My son and I play occasionally, but with Planeswalker decks.

Nonhumanoid Planeswalkers

New 20 Oct 2019 Asked by sirprofessorpiglesworth-blog 64 Comments

On average, how many new planeswalker cards do you intend to print in a non War of the Spark year? ( Including planeswalker decks) Then rationalize to me why 1 of those a year cant be a Sphinx, or Hydra, or Spider, or Ooze, or Fairy, or Surrakar, or Khenra, or Viashino, or Cephalid, or Nantuko, ect. I’m not trying to be rude, I just legit don’t understand why 1 or 2 of something weird a year is so problematic when you make so many.

We get somewhere around twelve planeswalkers a year in Standard-legal sets (barring outliers like War of the Spark). They need to be the characters from our story. Most will be existing planeswalker’s as that’s who is in our stories - our cast of characters. That means we only get a handful of new characters. Some of them have to be certain new characters that are part of the story. Our next priority is to hit our diversity goals. We want to figure out groups that aren’t represented by our planeswalkers and give them representation. Those tend to be human or at least humanoid. After that, there’s not much left, many years that fills up all our slots. So it’s not as easy as you think. And that’s not even getting into our market research that shows most players aren’t interested in nonhumanoid planeswalkers.

Face-Down Card Mechanics

New 31 Aug 2019 Asked by papillon94 40 Comments

What with the M19 Planeswalker deck Tezzeret putting cards from your hand face down as 5/5 Artifact Creatures instead of the 2/2 nonartifact Creatures of Morph, is there design space in having face-down things being different in the right environment?

The reason that was possible is that the card that does the effect is visible so you can double check the size of the creature in the rules text.
