Monastery Swiftspear Trivia

New 01 Oct 2017 Asked by onionslut 25 Comments

Maro! It's my birthday and I've forgotten to ask for trivia for the last 3 years. Got anything about my favorite card, Monastery Swiftspear?

I believe Monastery Swiftspear was one of the creatures made in the first batch of prowess creatures we made to first test the mechanic. Happy Birthday!

White Prowess Possibility

New 22 Apr 2017 Asked by ashmount-blog 27 Comments

Are we ever likely to see prowess in white again? I know it's primarily a U/R mechanic now but cards like Seeker of the Way and Monastrey Mentor were favourites of mine from Khans. Second only to Monastery Swiftspear of course :)

White has it tertiary which means it could show up infrequently.

Vanilla Spell Concept

New 03 Mar 2017 Asked by drukai 42 Comments

Do you as a designer ever want to create cards like this hypothetical "Vanilla Noncreature Spell" to see if someone can effectively utilize it? Something along the lines of a 0 cost Vanilla Instant in a set with cards like Guttersnipe, Young Pyromancer, Monastery Swiftspear or even Kiln Fiend could be a bizarre but interesting tool.

The problem is it takes up space that can be used to make a card that significantly more people will play with and enjoy.

Impactful Cards Satisfaction

Given people constantly say how much you guys lower the power level of sets, does it give you a lot of satisfaction when cards like "Treasure Cruise" and "Monastery Swiftspear", cards completely balanced in limited formats, make huge impacts in constructed, even eternal formats?

I feel they show we keep making cards that can be powerful in the right environment.

Old Formats Impact

So Khans has already hugely impacted older formats with 4 very defining cards. Jeskai Ascendancy, Treasure Cruise, Dig Through Time, and Monastery Swiftspear. I can't help but notice three of these cards are blue... does this signal a return to our Island loving overlords?

Or that blue cards are more likely to play into current metagames of older formats.

New Card Impact

As a eternal and standard player, I was really happy to see 'Treasure Cruise' and 'Monastery Swiftspear' in the winning deck at the LEGACY Star City Open Series tournament in New Jersey! Congrats for making such a cool set that can still shake up the eternal formats so well. Excited for the summer supplement set and Fate Reforged! My question is when will we find out about 'Origins' and when will we hear more about the summer supplement set? Thanks and keep up the amazing work!

I’m always happy seeing new cards show up in larger formats. As for what’s upcoming - have patience. All will be revealed in good time.

Jeskai Deck Building

New 28 Sep 2014 Asked by oogahound 24 Comments

MaRo! Help! I just can't manage to build a decent Jeska(i) deck! Cards like Singing Bell Strike and Monastery Swiftspear are incredibly powerful but after that and Seeker of the Way, all of the other cards seem to be extremelly below the curve unless you play atleast 2-4 noncreature spells per turn! Which is very difficult to do, atleast for me with my very limited collection of cards. Any piece of advice? P.S is it a coincidence that you already have a card named Jeska?

My advice is to see what decks others are playing. I hear Jeskai’s doing okay (see below).
