Modular Monstrosity

Clarifying Modifier Rules

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by nootnooter34 7 Comments

Hello Mr Rosewater,
Un-rules question for you:Modular Monstrosity has the ability, "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you have five seconds to choose a keyword you haven't chosen for a card named Modular Monstrosity today that's been printed on a creature card."There is also a ruling that reads, "If the keyword has a modifier, such as a mana cost or a number, you must choose a modifier that’s been printed."
My question is, can you choose a keyword that has been printed on a creature with a modifier that's only been printed on a noncreature card. Cumulative Upkeep has appeared on many creatures so is a valid keyword. Can I name "Cumulative Upkeep-Add {R}" which has only been seen on the noncreature Braids of Fire?
Thank you in advance

You have to choose a mechanic and a modifier that’s appeared on a creature.

Can you choose backup as a keyword for Modular Monstrosity? If so, would it do anything?

You can choose it, but it doesn’t do anything.

Unstable Draft Strategy

Hi Mark, I'm going to my first Unstable draft this Saturday with my dorm. Am I going about it the wrong way by having my Spike combo prepared, bringing a Masters booster to Summon, having lists for Hangman and Modular Monstrosity?

That’s a good start. Do you wear glasses and if not, could you?

Unstable question! Ordinarily in Magic if you copy a card with the cardname in the rules text, the name actually means "this card". What happens if a Do-It-Yourself-Seraph copies the text box of a Modular Monstrosity? Do you track two separate lists, one for cards named Modular Monstrosity and one for cards named Do-It-Yourself Seraph, or do you only track the MM list but the Seraphs don't add to it because they aren't named that? Thank you for any help! (We're playing as the former for now.)

You have one Modular Monstrosity list that applies to anyone using the ability.

Mechanic Naming Rules

"You can’t do Mechanic X because X has to be defined. You have to do Mechanic [number]." Well, Fumiko, the Lowblood has an effect that grants Bushido X, Petrified Wood-Kin has Bloodthirst X, and Thromok the Insatiable has Devour X.

My answer was talking about keywords nameable by Unstable’s Modular Monstrosity.

On modular monstrosity, is “Bushido X where X is the number of attacking creatures” valid? Or does the part defining X make it more than a keyword now?

You can’t do Mechanic X because X has to be defined. You have to do Mechanic [number].

With Modular Monstrosity, how does it work if you choose a keyword that typically has a number attached to it, such as Bushido? Would the number automatically be 1?

You have to pick the number and it must exist on a card. Then that ability regardless of the number is used up for the day.

Modular Keyword Retention

New 11 Nov 2018 Asked by cireretals 27 Comments

Modular monstrosity. Does it retain keywords from game to game? Through the day?

No. The abilities just last until the end of the game. The inability to rechoose them though lasts all day.

Modular Monstrosity Token Query

If I create a token of Modular Monstrosity (That has no had no abilities named on it) with Feldon of the Third Path's ability, since tokens are not cards, if I name Trample would future tokens be able to name trample as well?

Any version of Modular Monstrosity, token or card, counts towards your named abilities for the day.

Unusual Commanders Tale

New 16 Dec 2017 Asked by joslifer1 40 Comments

This may not be a silver-bordered story you want, but I pulled off the Clocknapper combo I wanted in the first Commander game I played with it. I had Clocknapper on the field, and a Modular Monstrosity with Triple Strike. I then cast Stolen Identity, encoding the spell on Modular Monstrosity and copying Clocknapper. When the copy entered the battlefield, I stole my opponent's beginning phase, then I went to combat and copied Clocknapper 3 more times, essentially stealing the rest of his turn. =D

It’s a cool story.

Can we call bushido X(Fumiko the Lowblood) for modular monstrosity and define X, or it has to be the same as Fumiko?

Choosing a keyword with X doesn’t mean anything as X is undefined.

Modular Monstrosity Limit

New 07 Dec 2017 Asked by sapphiconoclast 16 Comments

modular monstrosity can gain nonbasic landwalk because of dryad sophisticate, but can it also gain “basic landwalk” because that phrase is within the phrase “nonbasic landwalk” so it’s technically been printed on a creature card?

You can’t take pieces of words, so no that won’t work.

Modular Monstrosity Definition

New 06 Dec 2017 Asked by ismartman 18 Comments

For Modular Monstrosity, what is the definition of "today"? Does the list reset at midnight, or do you have to wait 24 hours before choosing a given keyword again?

It resets at midnight.

Undeathtouch Gameplay

New 06 Dec 2017 Asked by galaxy-drifter 28 Comments

Say I give Undeathtouch to my Modular Monstrosity and it's blocked by a totally normal, living creature on the battlefield. Is that creature killed or exiled?

There’s no way to currently do that. Modular Monstrosity can only name a keyword that’s been printed on a creature. Over My Dead Bodies, an enchantment, is the only card to ever have had undeathtouch printed on it.

FAQ Correction

New 04 Dec 2017 Asked by elmdormesdoram 55 Comments

Re: Modular Monstrosity. The FAQ says that different protections count as the same ability and that you can't pick "protection from red" and "protection from demons and from dragons" the same day.

Oops. Being a Rules Manager is hard. I messed up. The FAQ is correct. You may not rechoose a mechanic that uses the same word . So Protection is limited to once a day as it repeats the same word. You can use islandwalk and mountainwalk because they are different words with a similar root.

Balancing Modular Monstrosity

New 04 Dec 2017 Asked by death-burst 28 Comments

"If the name of the ability switches words (landwalk, protection, etc.) you can name each version once per day." ==> Hum, I think allowing variants of Protection makes Modular Monstrosity too strong. There are so many Protection that you'll never lose your keywords.

Monitor the gameplay and let me know if it’s causing a problem.

Keywords Rules Clarification

New 04 Dec 2017 Asked by maygekyatt 53 Comments

You've said that Annihilator 1 and Annihilator 6 both count as an instance of the same keyword for Modular Monstrosity, but what about Forestwalk and Islandwalk? Do they count as separate keywords, or are they both instances of Landwalk? For that matter, what about Denimwalk? Is it also a form of Landwalk?

Here’s how it works. If the keyword name stays the same but just the number changes (Annihilator, Rampage, etc.), you can only name it once a day. If the name of the ability switches words (landwalk, protection, etc.) you can name each version once per day. In other words, if you say Annihilator 4, you can’t then name Annihilator 2 on the same day, but if you name islandwalk, you can later name mountainwalk on the same day.

Modular monstrosity: 1st game; "Annihilator 2" 2nd game; "Annihilator 4"? Or only one version of a keyword per day regardless of number difference? Thanks for answering.

Only one version of Annihilator (or any mechanic) per day.
