Mind Control

Understanding of 'Threaten' Effects

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 16 Comments

Blues mind control power suite mist be a total anathema to Red core beliefs of listening to that inner voice(all of a sudden its that Blue mage ordering you about) which always made Threaten effects odd to me as part of its color pie; those would seem more in line with Black mind control (since Nlack would threaten, conjole and blackmail but thats a different topic all together). What was the impetus to put Threaten effects in Red was it part of the old I can use my enemys effects against them(i.e. Red Elemental Blast) or purely a playbalence thing of as a way to deal with big creatures?

Threaten is merely red using its magic to make others as impulsive as itself. Threaten is less it gaining control of their mind and more putting implusive thoughts in their head that get them to act a certain way.

Black's Steal Mechanic

New 20 May 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 33 Comments

Can Black still get Enslave without it being a bend or can it only steal creatures Gonti style? I would love to see more Mind Control style effects in Black.

Stealing creatures is tertiary in black. We do it pretty infrequently.

Mind Control Mechanisms

New 26 Feb 2023 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 38 Comments

Can I request that Mind Control Effects be aura based again? So many of them lately are irreversible. It is incredibly potent in Commander as this is a way to permanently steal a commander.

We try to do a mix.

Black's Control Mechanic

New 25 Feb 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 22 Comments

Are cards like Enslave (i.e. mono black Mind Control/Control Magic) a bend or a break? I would like to see more of it in small doses.

We call it tertiary in black, but is used pretty infrequently.

Card Names and Flavor

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by theshunpiker 33 Comments

I have been searching to see if you have answered this question, because I am sure you have, but I can not find it. Why are identical cards printed with different names, like Terramorphic Expanse | Evolving Wilds, Mind Control | Persuasion, or Llanowar Elves | Fyndhorn Elves| Elvish Mystic?

If cards aren’t problematic in number, we will sometimes change the flavor to better match the creative of the set it’s in.

Mind Control within White

New 22 Jun 2021 Asked by papillon94 28 Comments

I know it's not "in White" but are mind control effects really that far outside of White's wheelhouse? White's all about punishing large creatures, turning opponent's strengths against them, and its removal tends to be either reversible (like removing a mind-control enchantment) or expensive (like most permanent mind-control effects). Outside of not really needing the effect in more colors, is there any reason to keep it out of White's hands?

Yes, it’s very outside of white’s wheelhouse. Every color has some form of creature interaction. That doesn’t mean it gets all kinds of creature interaction.

Mind Control Permanency

New 19 Jun 2021 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 26 Comments

Aren’t irreversible mind control effects (so not like auras that can be removed or creatures that end the effect on leaving the battlefield) blue permanently dealing with something on the battlefield?

There are effects that can return control to a card’s owner such as flickering a creature, so that is not necessarily permanent.

Mechanics vs Flavor in Theft

New 14 Dec 2020 Asked by toilettoads 51 Comments

Blue is #1 in stealing permanents, normally flavored as manipulation or mind control, but sometimes as theft (Steal Artifact). Is outright theft, stealing something because you want it, in Blue's color pie? Seems like it could be Black.

Just because something flavorfully fits a color doesn’t mean it has a mechanical execution. It’s not hard to flavor just about any mechanic to fit a color. Flavor is just way more flexible than mechanics. Black is tertiary at stealing.

Blue Characteristics

"She’s scheming and tricky and loves stealing things. She also systematically works to keep improving her capabilities, whether it’s finding the best sea monster to summon or the most effective gadgets to steal." Whoa whoa whoa! Schemes are a black thing, no? Doesnt trickster feel more at home in red? The love to steal things? I understand take something to study, or to mind control, but just plane ol' blatent thievery?

Scheming and trickery and stealing are all base blue things. Black is more about doing things others won’t and less about elaborate sneaky plans.

White's Mind Control

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by spoopiestcentaur 21 Comments

Could white, reasonably, get a "Mind Control" effect of it was tacked onto a 'flicker' or ohh a Pacifism?

No. Creature stealing is primary blue, secondary red, tertiary black. We don’t want any more colors doing it.

Mind Control Logic

New 30 Apr 2019 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 36 Comments

Why are mind control effects blue? Why isn't letting blue permanently get rid of a creature this way considered a break? (The flavor is very blue, admittedly)

I enjoy when players answer their own questions. It saves me a lot of work. Every color needs flavorful ways to deal with creatures. They’re a major part of the game and make up over half the cards.

Not Mind Control

New 23 Apr 2019 Asked by hedronsifter 64 Comments

"It’s not mind control. You are making them peaceful. They can chose what they choose to do with that. You have no control of their actions." To make someone peaceful sounds like mind control. How can you make someone choose to be peaceful without mind control? Especially at instant speed? What exactly is making them choose to be peaceful? Verbal convincing? Soul manipulation? How is it not inherently mental?

It’s mental. Blue doesn’t have a monopoly on mental spells. Black can make you forget thinks, red can enflame your emotions and green can create serenity.

The Essence of Peace

New 23 Apr 2019 Asked by hedronsifter 38 Comments

"You are making someone give up the desire to fight. You are literally making them embrace peace, White’s end goal." Does the goal really matter with regards to the ability? Isnt it still mind controlling them to embrace peace? A very blue ability. Or is it more of a conversation they are having in the middle of the battle that changes their mind?

It’s not mind control. You are making them peaceful. They can chose what they choose to do with that. You have no control of their actions.

Color Pie Philosophy

New 23 Apr 2019 Asked by hedronsifter 63 Comments

It seems to me Swords to plowshares would be at least partly a blue ability... forcing someone (mind control) to give up evil for a life of humble farming. Why isnt this a break in the color pie..? If it isnt a break, perhaps I am not understanding the flavor. Does it have to do more with speaking directly to their soul than their mind? Could you explain the flavor of Swords to Plowshares?

You are making someone give up the desire to fight. You are literally making them embrace peace, White’s end goal.

Color Pie Breaks

New 13 Feb 2019 Asked by silas-mn 32 Comments

Everyone focuses on color pie breaks undermining a color’s weaknesses, but breaks also include undermining a color’s strengths, right? For instance, a red Mind Control would be a break because it undermines something Blue is supposed to be good at. (This might be why people see Delver of Secrets as a break.)

Yes, breaks can also make a dominant color no longer the most dominant at an effect. Delver of Secrets is not a problem as blue is supposed to be the best color with creatures optimized by playing instants and sorceries.

Creature Stealing Colors

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by jrjetu-blog 43 Comments

I don’t feel like creature stealing is as blue as it is white. White can have it flavored as recruitment, whether politically or ethically, as taking prisoners, many different ways. Blue just has mind control basically which doesn’t even seem to be a big part of blue’s philosophy in general.

Blue is all about the power of the mind. Mind control is as central to blue philosophically as it gets.

Animate Library drops off if you lose control of it as it can only animate your library.

Red vs Blue Traits

New 17 Apr 2018 Asked by keith-cancel 45 Comments

I find interesting you say red and blue have the least mechanical overlap. Both like to mess with the stack, both like spells, both like to use artifacts. Blue has card draw, red has impulsive draw. Blue has mind control effects, red has act treason effects. When it comes to filtering blue has draw then discard and red has discard then draw. Both have a form of free spells Cloud of Faeries vs Priest of Urabrask. I just thought of those quickly too.

I said the least, not none.

Command Zone Replacement

New 03 Dec 2017 Asked by wasteofzerosandones 20 Comments

To veganpopsicle: you can only opt to move your general to the Command Zone as a replacement effect during zone changes. Mind control effects just switch places on the battlefield, but the card doesn't actually leave the battlefield so no replacement effect would have a chance to apply.
