Jaya's Joke Explained

Re:Jaya/Lightning strike: isn't the joke that she's using lightning not fire?

Probably.

Flavor Text Query

New 10 Sep 2022 Asked by zzedar 53 Comments

I have a question about the flavor text on the DMU printing of Lightning Strike. Jaya is quoted on some printings of Incinerate, so presumably she used that spell. So why are Danitha so astonished and impressed (and Jaya so smug) about Jaya having a strictly worse version of that spell now?

Danitha wasn’t alive during the Ice Age.Also, in world, I don’t think someone could see two similar spells and tell which one was “stronger”. Both would be impressive.

Appreciation for Archive Artwork

Mark, As a red white player and a commander player I loved the lightning strike in the archive, the archive in general is just super pretty. Please congratulate the artist on their great work.

Will do!

Card Reprinting Logic

New 16 Oct 2017 Asked by jhoslayer 39 Comments

What's the design reasoning behind reprinting lightning strike over searing spear? Both seem generic enough.

Two issues: 1) Which is a better fit for the creative?
2) Will having two different copies of the same card (allowing eight to be played) cause a developmental problem in any format?

Designing Staple Effects

New 07 Sep 2017 Asked by inanimateau 33 Comments

Hi Mark, When designing a new set with common utility staple effects like Naturalise or lightning strike, do you "redesign them" each time or start with a base line of staple effects and see if the set needs them to move in new directions? Or do you always start with new versions and see if they conform to existing cards once the knobs stop turning?

We usually tend to start doing the staple mechanics mixed with the set’s mechanics and themes.

Returning to Standard

Lightning Strike, duress, unsummon and opt in standard. Thanks Maro!! After many years I am back in standard :)

Happy to hear that.

Effect Cost Variation

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by jadephoenix13 36 Comments

"Effects ebb and flow. 3 damage costing 2R today doesn’t mean it costs that next year." This is a pretty poor excuse when Lightning Strike might have kept at least 2 cards from getting banned in standard...

There are cheap removal cards in the format, so I believe your statement isn’t true. Not a developer, yada, yada, yada.

Standard Cards Proposal

New 13 Mar 2017 Asked by mdbryan84 30 Comments

I want to thank you for taking time to answer questions and communicate with the players. So if we can't have lightning bolt back in standard, how would you feel about the following suite of cards (one for each color) being perpetually in standard: naturalize, mana leak, doom blade, lightning strike, and celestial flare?

The cards always being in flux is a core part of the game.

Card Naming Convention

New 19 Aug 2016 Asked by soapiecakes-blog 22 Comments

I'm sure the window has passed now given all the "name a card" cards, but was it ever talked about to have names not be markers of unique cards? So you could do things like reprint Inquisition of Kozilek under a name that fits the plane it's being reprinted on, but have it count as the same card for deckbuilding, etc, or not have issues with stuff like searing spear/lightning strike because they'd be the same card?

There’s no easy way to make the names not the markers. I don’t expect it to change anytime soon.

Removing Shock & Lightning

New 23 Apr 2016 Asked by roborosewater 24 Comments

What makes you guys think getting rid of Shock and Lightning Strike will make "more interesting" two-mana Shocks and three-mana bolts see play? Even with an upside, three + mana for three damage isn't very good (with the exception of Prophetic Bolt and Fiery Temper, and Temper is only good in a dedicated Madness deck). Also, what exactly is not interesting about Atarka's Command, Skullcrack, Pillar of Flame or Wild Slash? They are/were by no means too powerful either.

Keeping control of the answers is about making the threats more interesting.

Mana Cost Order

New 12 Oct 2015 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 37 Comments

While we're on the topic of re-templating mana costs, can the cost be retemplated to put colorless after colored? e.g.: Lightning strike would have a cost of R1, instead of 1R.

If we started over, we’d probably do that. I’ve tried to get the public to say the mana cost as it’s written with little success.

Reprints Decision Factors

New 10 May 2015 Asked by nick-dowdle-jeskai-judicator-de 22 Comments

How does design decide when to do verbatim reprints (like Tormenting Voice) vs functional reprints (Incinerate vs Lightning Strike)?

That call is usually made by the creative team. Does the old name and concept fit the current world? Development occasionally steps in if having two versions of the same card has tournament issues.

Card Descriptors Idea

New 06 Nov 2014 Asked by inspired-kettchup 45 Comments

D&D spells have descriptors like "fire" or "death" or "evil" or whatever to categorize them and distinguish them. If the Magic card face had enough space, would you use descriptors on Instants and Sorceries the way permanents have subtypes, so they could be easily grouped? (Searing Spear and Lightning Strike would be slightly functionally different then; maybe young pyromancer cares more about the spear.) Or do you think it would add too much complexity?

If we started over, I’d be tempted to make more flavorful supertypes.

Lightning Strike Decision

New 04 Oct 2014 Asked by sofacoin 15 Comments

Let's reverse "Why Lightning Strike": If you'd thought of Lightning Strike before m13, would you have used it instead of Searing Spear?

Remember that the change in particular happen after we were committed to art that didn’t match the old name.

Card Naming Strategy

New 04 Oct 2014 Asked by lseths 30 Comments

In regards to names for cards, you said "It’s one of our most limited resources. Note we are careful about when we use a simple name." Then why do you keep wasting names on functional reprints? Why not reprint Searing Spear instead of wasting the name Lightning Strike? Why not reprint Inspiration instead of making Weave Fate? I can understand for something like Counsel of the Soratami becoming Divination due to it being plane-specific, but why do these re-names if names are so valuable?

Usually when we use a good name on a card that’s similar, one of two this is going on. One, we slightly changed the card mechanically and that’s what we want to be reprinting in the future (example: Weave Fate) or two, it’s a general enough effect that we know we’ll use often, so we make a slightly different creative take to allow us some choice to adapt to the world it in future reprints (example: Lightning Strike).

Role of Removal Spells

New 19 Jul 2014 Asked by brutticusforce 28 Comments

I really like X removal spells like Death Wind and Heat Ray. It seems only fair that if your opponent invests a lot of mana in to a powerful creature, you should have invest a lot to kill it. Do you think "hard removal" like Doomblade (or "fixed removal" like lightning strike) are required in magic? How do you think the game would be like with out them?

I think they play an important role in the game.

Removal Rarity Shift

There is good removal at common, though, like Lightning Strike. Only the cheap and unconditional ones have shifted rarity.

Correct.

Lightning Strike Reprint

New 14 Jun 2014 Asked by amcrocker 50 Comments

What purpose does reprinting Lightning Strike serve? Its already in standard and will be for same length of time as M15. If red needed a decent burn for limited why not reprint Searing Spear or create a new burn spell. It seems rather lazy.

My new theory is people just don’t like Lighting Strike because every time we print it, I get angry mail. : )

Theros Lightning Appreciation

New 02 Apr 2014 Asked by write-in-stone 20 Comments

The more we see of Theros worldbuilding and learn about Keranos in particular, the happier I am that Lightning Strike exists as it is, instead of being Searing Spear, as many fans (including me) wished it had been when Theros was first spoiled and came out. Lightning Strike keeps getting cooler the deeper we get into Theros!

I’m glad some of you are coming around. : )

Countering the Uncounterable

New 27 Mar 2014 Asked by theredvader 19 Comments

So I was thinking about the idea of a counterspell that can only counter a card that was considered "can't be countered." It would only work for cards like supreme verdict but not normal spells like lightning strike. What do you think about this?

A trace buster buster buster? : ) Pretty narrow. Maybe in a set with a lot of “can’t be countered”.
