Intro Packs

Evolution of Product Line

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by thasgar 22 Comments

Hey Mark! I've been playing Magic long enough to remember tournament packs (originally known as starter decks) and theme decks, and remembering being disappointed when they were cut in favor of Intro Packs (which then were changed further, but that's for another question). Anyway, i don't remember the reasoning behind that change those years ago. Was it a similar situation to what we are seeing now with Set/Draft being cut and the introduction of Play Boosters?

What did tournament packs in was they were significantly more expensive to make (compared to how many cards were in it) and much less popular than boosters. We also had data that said it wasn’t helping with onboarding which was a lot of their initial purpose.

Appreciating Blue/Red

Hi, Mark! Today is my 26th Birthday and I wanted to invoke the sacred rite of Birthday Trivia! But, instead of trivia, I wanted to asked what's something you appreciate about Blue/Red philosophy? Blue/Red was the color pair of the second deck I ever got (it was the Monstrosity Intro Pack from the OG Theros set), and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you so much! : )

I love that knowledge + passion = creativity.

Planeswalker Pack Strategy

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by spiketheallosaur 73 Comments

Why do you keep overcosting planeswalker pack cards? Intro pack Ral actually seems like a decent card but at 6 mana that makes him unplayable, and I really feel that "because new players" isn't a good reason

We don’t want to put tournament viable new cards in the planeswalker packs because we don’t want to make tournament players feel as if they have to buy them.

Defending Crabapple Cohort

New 24 Jun 2017 Asked by mewr11 71 Comments

Why is everyone hating on Crabapple Cohort? Its essentially a 5-mana 5/5. It beats down. It's no Tarmogoyf, but throw a couple into an intro pack and it plays fine. Cards don't need to be super powerful to be fun, they just need to be played with and against cards of a similar power level.

Yeah, stop being mean to Crabapple Cohort.

Standard Cards Issue

New 15 Sep 2016 Asked by iamhighwayman 29 Comments

Like many players I know my main formats are limited and standard. I get most of my standard cards from playing limited and buying boosters. Sure, it would be nice to collect every single card you guys print, in all formats and all artwork, but as long as i can still play standard i don't mind that i will probably never own more than a couple of masterpiece cards. No Problem. Except... apparently now standard also includes cards only printed in intro packs. What the heck??

The new cards in the planeswalker packs are design to be exciting to beginners but not tournament level.

PW Deck Choices

New 12 Jul 2016 Asked by serpens 31 Comments

You said Tamiyo wouldn't get a PW Intro deck because other PWs had a bigger role. I'd been kind of assuming that the PWs with big roles would actually have cards *in the set/block*, and the Intro pack PWs would be the ones that were more of the side characters in the block story. So I was wrong? The main PWs will get the main set cards AND the different Intro deck cards?

Yep. The Planeswalker packs are to introduce new players. We want the highest profile Planeswalkers.

Intro Pack Surprise

New 26 Jun 2016 Asked by translesbianorchestra 25 Comments

Im getting a friend into magic, so i helped order him an intro pack (WR from SOI). In it was a pack with both Relentless Dead and Thing in the Ice. Thanks for putting that in there for him! (he loves the deck, btw)

You’re welcome.

Revamping Intro Packs

New 03 Jun 2016 Asked by 77dredd-blog 17 Comments

Was the option of improving Intro Packs rather than scrapping them ever discussed? They got panned as bad by some folks, but it wouldn't have taken much to improve them.

In some ways the planeswalker packs are a revamped into deck.

Planeswalker Packs

New 30 May 2016 Asked by ibarakidouji 45 Comments

It's really nice of you guys to turn intro packs into planeswalker decks. But is there a possibility that either one of the 2 walkers(you were making 2 decks at a time instead of 5, right?) are from older sets that just fits better a certain theme? Will there be a possibility to see old walkers reprinted outside Modern masters and such special sets?

The Planeswalkers in the planeswalker packs will be from the current set’s story. Our goal is to get new players invested in the current story and characters.

DFCs in Intro Packs

New 31 Mar 2016 Asked by feylund 22 Comments

any particular reason for not having any DFCs in the intro packs? Logistical? or not wanting to include checklist cards with the packs?

It’s a logistical issue.

New Player Products

Any plan for new product for new player? When new truly intro pack like Magic Origins release?

I’m going to have an article on the topic next month.

Supplemental Products Strategy

New 19 Mar 2016 Asked by ibeticaneatawholecow 25 Comments

The supplemental products HtH is a bit strange because it puts up products that are aimed at different people to one type of audience (you have said the twitter followers were more enfranchised) eg MM vs Intro packs. MM is likely to crush intro, but I'd argue intros are more important to the game.

Head-to-Head is primarily for entertainment and to spur discussion.

Non-full-art Wastes will be in the intro packs (like the other non-full-art basics)

Intro Pack Standard Lands

New 03 Oct 2015 Asked by the-orz 84 Comments

Though I'm really quite excited about the new Zendikar block, I was a little disappointed to find my intro pack was full of standard land cards instead of the full-art lands found in the individual boosters. What was the reasoning behind this?

It’s very important for the intro packs to be available for the players who need them. If we had put full-art lands in them, the more enfranchised players would have bought them all up and the main way to ramp new player into the game wouldn’t be there for them.

Supplementary Product Control

New 22 Apr 2015 Asked by sparkysparkyboomman525 11 Comments

How much control do you have over supplementary products such as event decks and intro packs?

Very little.

Intro Pack Complexity

New 30 Dec 2014 Asked by voicesofchaos 27 Comments

All of the Intro Pack cover cards seem more complicated then your average card. I know NWO only cares about commons but how do you feel about these products aimed at beginners showing off the more complicated stuff so much?

This block is definitely pushing NWO boundaries. We are aware and this is not an overall shift of any kind, it’s just the pendulum swinging in a direction it normally does not.

Watermarking Decisions

New 18 Sep 2014 Asked by markxero 17 Comments

Now we've seen the intro pack lists, I'm struggling even more to understand the watermarking decisions. How was Kin-Tree Invocation *not* Abzan, for example, or Master the Way Jeskai? I so want to be ok with it all, but things like that stir my Vorthos blood :(

Remember that if a card was in multiple intro decks, it couldn’t have a watermark regardless of the creative.

Intro Pack Production

New 16 Sep 2014 Asked by chardish 18 Comments

Since I'm sure there's a reason: what's the reason why intro packs don't have their own print runs like Duel Decks, where they could have whatever watermarks they need?

Intro packs do have their own print run, but we like all copies are cards from the same set to be identical (obviously barring alternate art promos).

Intro Pack Watermark Issue

New 15 Sep 2014 Asked by mtgstarwizard 49 Comments

I'm usually very optimistic and not a naysayer, but you guys really blew it with the watermark problem in Khans. The intro packs are not more important than respecting the flavor of the cards, and a lot of cards are lacking the mark they should have/have a mark they shouldn't have. Master the Way, the rare enemy-color pair cycle that only Rakshasha Deathdealer has the mark, Altar of the Brood are some of the more serious examples. You should have made different intro decks and marked right.

Different people prioritize different things. Return to Ravnica had spells (although not creatures) that were clearly one guild without the watermark and players didn’t seem to mind so we made our choice somewhat based on that. Khans of Tarkir will definitely get us to talk more about how and where we use watermarks.

Watermark Production Issues

New 12 Sep 2014 Asked by mcsleuthburger 9 Comments

As I'm sure there are reasons, what are the reasons that wizards didn't just make cards in the intro packs have the appropriate watermark for the deck it was in and then cards in boosters have the watermark they were supposed to have from a creative/design standpoint?

Having two different versions of the same card causes all sorts of production issues.
