Hornet Queen’s Creature Type

How come hornet queen doesn’t have the creature type hornet?

Because we use Insect as a larger grouping.

Hornet Queen Reprints

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by quantext 48 Comments

If Hornet Queen is a color pie break, why is it reprinted so often in commander pre-constructed decks?

Because it’s popular and it’s not introducing it to a format that doesn’t yet have it.

Hornet Queen Color

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 34 Comments

Famously (or infamously), Hornet Queen is considered a Colour Pie Break in Green. Would adding Black to its colour identity fix this, is this perhaps the direction for bees going forward?

Hornet Queen could be black.

Hornet Queen Break Criteria

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by seventhousand7 31 Comments

Is Hornet Queen only a break because it makes a bunch of small flier tokens? Green seems to be allowed to get flying on high MV rare creatures, like on the occasional green dragon.

Hornet Queen’s issue is that it’s too efficient in both creating fliers and in shutting down the opponent’s fliers with your own fliers.

Token Attribute Consistency

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 40 Comments

RE: Previous ask regarding token abilities and color. Unfortunately, you did not address the question. If a token is generated by a card of a different color, can it have abilities that ARE in-pie for the card that generated it, but NOT in-pie for the color of the token itself. The original example I gave was if Hornet Queen itself were Black, but the tokens were still mono-Green. Another example might be a Red card that generates mono-Blue tokens with haste.

If a black card makes a token, of any color, it has to have abilities that black can have.

Token Abilities and Color

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 33 Comments

Can tokens have abilities that are out-of-pie for the token's color if the token itself is generated by a card of a color that could have the ability? For example, if Hornet Queen were a black card, could the tokens it generated still be mono-green?

Cards can generate tokens of other colors, but that token must mechanically be something the original color can produce.

Overlay Name Reuse Possibility

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by simicmimic 30 Comments

Could an overlay card name be the same as another regular card, e.g., a reprinted Ant Queen with the overlay name Hornet Queen?

I do not believe we’d use a name on an existing Magic card as an overlay name.

Color Assignment for Hornet Queen

In order to keep its exact text, what color(s) should Hornet Queen be?

Black could do the exact text except the tokens would be black.

Hornet Queen in white would have a different keyword on its babies.

Mono-Black Hornet Queen Possibility

Would Hornet Queen but mono-Black be following the color pie?

Yep.

Suitability of Hornet Queen

Would Hornet Queen be perfectly acceptable if it cost 4BBB instead of 4GGG?

I’m not good at power level, but it’s in color pie.

Feasibility of Colorshifted Theme

New 27 Dec 2020 Asked by cannotwynn 83 Comments

Do you think it’s possible and worthwhile to, **without** bending or breaking the pie like Planar Chaos, have a “colorshifted” theme in a set? I’m picturing things like the GDS3 “Serra Angel” in BG, a monoblack Hornet Queen, or monocolored versions of some of the appropriate-but-unique hybrid cards.

It is possible.

Combining Hornet Queen Color Combinations

New 27 Dec 2020 Asked by szwanger 44 Comments

Would a green/blue or green/white Hornet Queen be a bend?

Green/white is a possibility. Green/blue is a little more of a flavor stretch.

Remaking Hornet Queen

Either monoblack or black/green, most likely.

No.

Green Creature's Flying

New 26 Dec 2020 Asked by pop-star-manager-1 43 Comments

I don't consider it so wrong when a green creature flies. Flying is something so common that it's just everywhere. I think that flying is something that is chosen for flavor reason, because that character flies. The only things that don't fit to green are effect that grant flying or care about flying (except for flying hate), or also things that create too many fliers (such as Hornet Queen). Or am I wrong?

Green is supposed to be actively bad at flying and have very few fliers. It is first in reach and flying creature kill to have an answer to fliers.

New Colors for Hornets

New 25 Dec 2020 Asked by evscfa1 39 Comments

If Hornet Queen/Nest are breaks, what color would hornets be now? Or would they be a multicolor-only type of insect as green/black?

Hornet Queen should have been black/green.

More Flying Insect Cards

New 25 Dec 2020 Asked by evscfa1 50 Comments

I know green isn't usually supposed to get flying except the rare case of mono green dragons and insects, but can i request more insect tribal that includes flying? Hornet Queen and Hornet Nest are two of my favorite mono green cards despite being so close to being green breaks, only avoiding it via the loophole of insects being green.

I consider those cards breaks, especially Hornet Queen.

Hornet Queen Reprint Concern

New 10 Aug 2020 Asked by kmalsom 45 Comments

Mark, do you believe that reprinting hornet queen into Arena will confuse newer players about color pie since you've stated that this is a color pie break?

If the decision was up to me, I personally wouldn’t have reprinted it.

Concerns about Green Color

New 10 Apr 2020 Asked by badatcommander 74 Comments

I just saw Ram Through, and it feels about as green as Hornet Queen. I know you guys have been experimenting with giving green still more of the color pie, and I'm humbly asking you to please, please rein it back in.

“Bite” (one-sided fight) isn’t just allowable in green, it’s primary and has been for a while. Adding “trample” to it (a primary green ability nonetheless) shouldn’t make the spell feel out of pie for green.
