Incorporation of Technology in Magic

New 25 Aug 2021 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 126 Comments

Technology has existed in Magic really from the begining, but Antiquities brought robot soldiers, energy weapons, strip mining machines and mechanized warfare. Phyrexia is a robotic/mechanized plane effectively ruled over by a malevolent AI. Karn is an andriod of sorts, Mirrodin was about Cyborgs and now the New Phyrexia is like The Borg. Kaladesh is sort of steam punk without the steam, Vryn has a mass power grid. Magic has always had one toe in Scifi and I hope it keeps going deeper from Magics unique point of view.

Interesting point.

Karn Representation

New 12 Nov 2017 Asked by genderlich-deactivated20211204 233 Comments

When all the asexual and Nonbinary people are telling you Karn isn't good representation, why is your continual response "yes he is" instead of listening to them?

Sorry, that’s not my intent. What keeps happening is people keep saying “Karn is a robot” and, as his co-creator, I keep defending the character as a character. I’m not trying to defend him as a good representative of an asexual character (although I occasionally defend him as being an asexual, agender character). I’m trying to defend him as a good character, one more worthy than constantly being called “just a robot”. I hear the larger message though that there is a desire for more asexual characters. Asexuality is hard for us to show as we barely even touch romantic relationships and almost never show sexuality, so I’m not sure it’s a demand that will be easy for us to meet to the satisfaction of the people asking. If I have come off as dismissive on the topic, that’s not my intent, but I will try to be more conscious in the future as to how my words are being received. If I have offended anyone, I apologize.

Ace Walkers Representation

Will we ever get ace walkers that arent literally a robot? Sort of reinforces bad stereotypes, tho I know wizards didnt do that on purpose

Karn is not some emotionless robot. He’s a golem with deep emotions and is one of the most sympathetic and popular characters in the game.

Forgetting Karn

When mentioning the planeswalkers that are older than Arlinn Kord you forgot everyone's favorite robot, Karn! :)

Oh, sorry Karn. I’m sure I forgot someone else. Sorry, someone else.

Karn and Robot Magic

Do you think well see more of Karn when robots start getting into magic?

The bigger question is when Magic is designed by an AI, will there be more artifact creatures made?

Colorless Fictional Characters

Curious. Is there any fictional character that is colorless? Like Karn?

Emotionless robots probably, ones that just do the functioned they are programmed for.
