Creature Type Updates

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by captainjackharness 36 Comments

Any thoughts on giving creatures with types in their name the actual creature type? Such as Shadowmoor's Demigod of Revenge getting Demigod, in addition to its Spirit Avatar types it already has? Or Elite Inquisitor getting Inquisitor? Or the Aether Revolt Rebels getting that?

When we errata creature types, we often do that, but not always. The word being in the name doesn’t always line up. A Giant Spider is not a Giant as an example.

Increased Spider Cards Design

New 20 May 2022 Asked by whipandnaenaethesqueakquel 46 Comments

i started to get into magic with a spider tribal deck in 2016, Ive noticed that spider designs really ramped up in both frequency and power. instead of Giant Spider every set, a new one would be made with the set mechanic. Was this a draft focused decision, since spiders are a key defensive green option against flyers. Or was there a big spider advocate in the design team?

R&D just likes Spiders, I guess.

Trivia Request About Giants

New 15 May 2022 Asked by miresmalice 51 Comments

Hi Mark! It’s my birthday, so would love to request some trivia on my favourite tribe of all time: Giants!

Giant, as a creature type, is a specific race of creatures (like Merfolk or Elves) and not a descriptor. That’s Giant Spider isn’t creature type Giant Spider. Happy Birthday!

Trivia about Spider Tribes

Hi Mark! I’d like to invoke Birthday Trivia for my favorite tribes: Spiders and Insects.

I believe, in Alpha, Richard Garfield got the idea for reach from Giant Spider and not the other way around.Happy Birthday!

Giant Spider Typing Conundrum

Does Minsc mean your opinion on whether things like giant spider should have the giant type, changed?

No. If it was up to me, Boo wouldn’t have had the Giant creature type.

Color Assignment for Spiders

New 02 Mar 2021 Asked by barreldogzilla 52 Comments

Are spiders green only because of reach? It always felt weird to not see spiders primarily in black

I think Giant Spider is the main reason they ended up in green. We do on occasion make them in black.

Terminology of Creature Type

New 16 Jan 2021 Asked by aniodia 62 Comments

Giant Ox, is an Ox, but not a Giant. What gives? (I know Giant is a relevant creature type in Kaldheim, but still...)

The creature type Giant means you of the race Giant, not that you are large. Giant Spider is giant, but not a Giant.

Rogue Elephant Card

New 09 May 2020 Asked by wholesome-yandere 42 Comments

who do i have to talk to to make Rogue Elephant an Elephant Rogue instead of just an Elephant?

Rogue Elephant is no more an Elephant Rogue than Giant Spider is a Spider Giant.

Prior Keywords Origin

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by eyeball-frog 85 Comments

You mentioned there used to be nicknames for lifelink, vigilance, and haste before they were keyworded. What were they? What about other later keywords like reach, deathtouch, etc?

Vigilance was called the Serra ability after Serra Angel. Lifelink was called spirit link after the Legends card (which worked slightly differently than what we ended up keywording. Haste was called Raging after Raging Goblin or celerity which is what R&D called it.Reach was called the Spider ability after Giant Spider. Deathtouch was called the basilisk ability after Thicket Baslisk in Alpha. My point is that players will come up with slang usually based on the first and/or most popular card with the ability, but once we give it an official name, it eventually becomes the default. And yes, players always say they’re going to keep using the slang, but they don’t, not when the cards give it a real name.

Card Reprint Trivia

New 25 Nov 2018 Asked by aleriacarventus 35 Comments

Here's a trivia question: do you know what card has been reprinted the most times with the same artwork?

I do not. My guess is Giant Spider as it was in the most core sets usually with the same art.

Spider Card Design

are spiders like minotaurs in that the limitations of their design make it hard for there to be any 1 drops? we don't have any yet :(

Giant Spider can fit in any world that has giant spiders. More than you think.

Alpha Reprints

New 19 Oct 2015 Asked by paxaqua 33 Comments

Re: reprints. Are we essentially done seeing reprints from alpha other than an occasional giant spider or giant growth? Is there anything left from that set that still fits modern color pie, power level and flavor?

There are still a few things left.

Giant Mantis vs Spider

New 07 Oct 2015 Asked by forgottenghosts 46 Comments

Why was Giant Mantis printed instead of Giant Spider? They're exactly the same. And last I heard Zendikar had spiders (Oran-Rief Recluse).

And also apparently mantises. : )

Mark, did you see you're reprinting giant mantis ?! High fives for childhood card returns!

I’ve gotten people happy to see the Mantis returns and others sad that it wasn’t Giant Spider.

Core Set Survivor

New 12 Jun 2015 Asked by darththulhu 20 Comments

The Core Set Survivor game ended because even Giant Spider rotated out. It was the *last* one to rotate out, which is why it won, but there are no other Alpha Cards that didn’t rotate out earlier, so the game ended.

People today are talking about “Creature Keyword Survivor”.

Deathtouch and Trample Query

New 10 Apr 2015 Asked by garrukked 34 Comments

What are the chances of getting Deathtouch and Trample on a monogreen creature? Like a Legendary Giant Spider? It just seems like Green often lacks in the department it's supposed to excel in, good, big Creatures.

Deathtouch and trample are extremely powerful together and not a lot of players understand how they interact so it’s not something we want to do very often.

Green's Iconic Debate

New 03 Feb 2015 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 30 Comments

Giant Spider was in 15/17 core sets, how is he not green's iconic?

Iconics are high profile, exciting cards if a particular creature type we do at higher rarities. Giant Spider does not fit multiple requirements.
