Evolving Wilds

Potential for Desert Evolving Wilds

New 09 Jun 2024 Asked by bigbantbeast 13 Comments

Hi, Mark! In 2017, you wrote an Odds & Ends article for Amonkhet. In that article, someone asked why a Desert-typed Evolving Wilds wasn't made and the short of it was it didn't occur to the designers. Now that OTJ brought back deserts, it appears that card also didn't make it. Do you think there's a chance we could one day see a Desert Evolving Wilds? Thank you!

I’m not sure how much space Evolving Wilds have for added value.

Subtype Absence

New 02 May 2024 Asked by thunderweb 27 Comments

Is there a term for these type of cards? "(Type) cards that don't have any (type) subtype"- creature cards without any creature subtype (such as "Go-Shintai of X", Legendary Enchantment Creatures - Shrine)- artifact cards without any artifact subtypes (such as "Greatest Show in the Multiverse", an Artifact Enchantment - Saga)- other type of cards without respective subtypes (such as "The Wanderer" for Planeswalker, "Evolving Wilds" for Land, "Lightning Bolt" for Instant, etc.)

There is not a term for it, as it’s not something we need to talk about in design.

Wilds vs. Courts

New 20 Sep 2023 Asked by shallowerblue 39 Comments

Hi Mark, I just learned that in WOE, the three cards with "Wilds" in their name: Evolving Wilds, Brave the Wilds, and Return from the Wilds, can each search for a basic land from the library and put it into hand or the battlefield. I was intrigued since the counterpart to the wilds, aka the courts, were mono-color focused. Was this naming intentional? Thanks!

I assume it was intentional. Evolving Wilds being a reprint whose name already existed.

Land Selection Rationale

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by followingthemagic 31 Comments

Why does a set get or not get evolving wilds or terramorphic expanse? MOM has plenty of three color legendarys people would want to fix for, or even heavy single color. Seemed like an interesting lack of inclusion.

There’s a larger balance of lands that gets chosen to provide enough color fixing without making too much.

Card Names and Flavor

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by theshunpiker 33 Comments

I have been searching to see if you have answered this question, because I am sure you have, but I can not find it. Why are identical cards printed with different names, like Terramorphic Expanse | Evolving Wilds, Mind Control | Persuasion, or Llanowar Elves | Fyndhorn Elves| Elvish Mystic?

If cards aren’t problematic in number, we will sometimes change the flavor to better match the creative of the set it’s in.

Choosing Card Version in Reprints

New 20 Jul 2022 Asked by born-hurt 25 Comments

When reprinting cards like Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse or Meandering River/Coastal Tower, how do you decide which version of (functionally) the same card gets printed in which product?

Usually, it’s a call by the creative team which best fits the world.

Evolving Wilds Reprint Trivia

Fun fact - with the reprint in Midnight Hunt, Evolving Wilds is now the card (that isn't a basic land) with the most unique arts! It used to be tied with Counterspell and Stone Rain

Evolving Wilds vs Terramorphic Expanse

New 01 Sep 2021 Asked by titania776 54 Comments

Is there any particular reason that Evolving Wilds gets printed in premier set and Terramorphic Expanse hasn’t been since Core set 2011? I understand not wanting them together but why not alternate?

My guess is the name Evolving Wilds just fits better with most worlds.

Frequency of Printing Manaless Lands

New 17 Jul 2021 Asked by anonleoleo 34 Comments

How often would you say it's okay to print lands with no mana abilities (talking like Eye of Ugin, not Evolving Wilds)?

Very infrequently. Once every other decade or so.

Appreciation for Happy Little Gathering

New 24 Feb 2021 Asked by gamma-3 67 Comments

I just got my recent secret lair order and I have to say, I love the inclusion of the Evolving Wilds (with art by Bob Ross) as a hidden bonus in the Happy Little Gathering drop! High fives to whomever is responsible!

High fives shall be delivered!

Shuffling Impact on Standard

New 30 Aug 2020 Asked by lbolt187 35 Comments

Regarding fetch lands in standard if shuffling is such an issue why ever reprint evolving wilds, or Fabled Passage? I feel like regardless of duals or not most tournament decks would run them regardless thus still having the shuffling issue.

There’s a difference between decks running four copies of one shuffling card and multiple copies. Perhaps even one shuffling card is too high, but we’re testing having a little.

Teramorphic Expanse in JumpStart

Can you please (virtual) high five whoever is responsible for putting Terramorphic Expanse in JumpStart instead of Evolving Wilds? The new art is beautiful.

Will do.

Preference for Evolving Wilds

New 10 Apr 2020 Asked by pforpizza 37 Comments

Hi Mark, I just saw in the full spoiler the reprint of Evolving Wilds. I'm genuinely curious, why there's this overwhelming preference of it over Terramorphic Expanse? I know the former one's name can fit in more planes, but is it only a flavor reason? Thanks.

I think it’s the major reason.

Land Color Representation

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by hejemony 62 Comments

hi mark. do you happen to know why recent five colour fetch-esque lands prismatic vista and fabled passage are gold while evolving wilds is grey? does this represent a change to how lands are coloured or am i missing a variable? thanks!

No, it’s a change. We like lands to give you a hint what color they give you access to. Gold does a better job of visually conveying any color.

Fetchlands in Pioneer

New 26 Oct 2019 Asked by itsgadang 49 Comments

Hello Mark, can you explain why the fetchlands that are banned in pioneer considered problematic even in an envoirement where they can only get monocolored lands but "basic-fetchlands" like evolving wilds and fabled passage are okay? They both have the same shuffling problem.

There is a shuffling threshold. We think a little is okay, but fetchlands (plus basic land types on dual lands which exist in Pioneer) tend to encourage playing a whole bunch of fetchlands.

Reprint Art Variety

New 30 Jun 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 38 Comments

Re art reprints: I also wish there was more variety in art chosen for reprints. For example, the ROE Evolving Wilds art is pretty boring, but it's been printed 21 times! Meanwhile, there's tons of alternate art for Evolving Wilds that have only been used once each.

There is an advantage to making lands easy to grasp by seeing their picture as they sit in an area of play less focused on.

Duplicate Basic Fetches?

New 22 Mar 2019 Asked by mrmoustachemm 28 Comments

Would you ever put both Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds in the same booster set (Standard or supplemental)?

Unlikely.

Brawl Format Concerns

New 24 Mar 2018 Asked by mrmoustachemm 59 Comments

Currently there are only 18 lands in Standard with a colourless colour identity (ie no colour mana symbols), excluding Evolving Wilds (no Wastes to fetch) and transformed lands (which don't really contribute to a deck's land count). I'd suggest that if Brawl has any colourless commanders legal (like Hope of Ghirapur or Karn), there should be at least 25 unique colourless lands available, or Wastes should be always be printed in Standard (maybe in Deckbuilder Toolkits).

It’s an issue that has been raised and I know R&D is going to talk about it. Brawl is a new format so it will have some early growing as we figure out issues. Input from all of you with concerns will have us figure out these issues.

Evolving Wilds Reprints

New 06 Jan 2018 Asked by theroguepyro-blog 49 Comments

Why do you guys continually reprint Evolving Wilds when Terramorphic Expanse has an INFINITELY cooler name?

We let the creative team choose the name the better suits the world.

Card Reprints Considered

New 11 Jul 2017 Asked by genderlich-deactivated20211204 43 Comments

Is Terramorphic Expanse ever coming back or is Evolving Wilds here forever?

It could come back if the flavor is a better fit for the world.
