Enter The Battlefield

Formatting Change Query

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 0 Comments

I’m personally fine with the shortening of “enters the battlefield” to just “enters”, it’s what I say out loud most of the time anyway, but wowza something feels super wrong reading “whenever a creature you control enters” and it not being worded as “whenever a creature enters under your control”. It gives me the same feeling as ordering water and getting carbonated strawberry milk, or taking a bite of a BLT and finding an entire uncut pickle inside. There’s literally nothing those two have in common with magic cards, I’m just using them to explain my level of discomfort and confusion. What led to this formatting change?

It allows us to use one less word (“you control” vs. “under your control”).

Keyword 'Draw' Consistency

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by cdailey 8 Comments

Re: Keyword 'Draw': "We increase confusion for what?"We'd gain some consistency. As the previous person noted, it'd put drawing cards in line with things such as scry, survail, and mill. It also would be adjacent to the changes from "enters the battlefield" to "enters." In the same way that the battlefield is the only thing that can be entered, cards are the only thing you can draw.I personally don't feel either way is inherently better, I just see the merit the previous post was getting at.

But we simply don’t template everything that involves a number like that. We don’t say Lifegain 3 and Discard 2 and Tutor 1.

Card Text Change

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 4 Comments

I'm so happy that "When Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward enters the battlefield" will now just be "When this card enters". It saves SO much space in card text and cleans up (IMO) Magic text boxes a fair bit. Can I ask what finally made the change happen? Also, why didn't the two changes (ETB and "Card Name") happen at the same time?

In templating, there often is a conflict between clarity and brevity. Also, we more often tend to take changes slowly as it’s easier if they’re more incremental.

Streamlining Card Text

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by tailsrevane 1 Comments

hi mark! big fan, thank you for everything you've done for this game and its community.with the recent emphasis on streamlining text ("enters" replacing "enters the battlefield" etc), has there been any discussion of replacing "draw a card" with "draw 1," "draw two cards" with "draw 2," etc?

It doesn’t save us much space, and not in the places we most need to save space.

Battlefield Terminology Change

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by coolcoolcooltighttightight 3 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm curious about the reasons for changing "enters the battlefield" to just "enters". I feel like there are other similar wordings that you say wouldn't be worth shortening because it wouldn't save that much space. I don't mean this as a criticism. I'm just curious.

It’s a change we’ve talked about for a while. One playtest we decided to just try it, and no one noticed. So we decided it was a low impact way to lessen words.

Enters the Battlefield Change

Is "enters the battlefield" going away completely in favor of "enters"?

Yes, as of Bloomburrow “enters the battlefield” is being shortened to “enters”.

Sharazad Card Interpretation

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 7 Comments

Why is sharazad a sorcery instead of a creature with an ETB and Ward cost both of which make you play sub games when the latter is more accurate to her lore.

Enter the battlefield effects didn’t exist when Arabian Nights was published.

Templating Reach Versus Flying

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by kasim18-blog 1 Comments

regarding the templating as far as reach as flying. My inclination would be to divide it into 'what the caster needs to know' and 'what both players need to know'. especially in draft, if a creature draws a card on ETB, that can go below, the owner will read that, but a combat relevant keyword should always be up top to be visible. To me, 'reach' at the bottom is the same basic Dryad Arbor problem.

But let’s say the card has an alternative cost. If you put that too far down on the card, players miss they can cast it. It’s a tricky balance.

White's Card Draw Mechanics

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 41 Comments

I gotta say, I am not a fan of the "once per turn" draw in White. It just doesn't have the same mechanical bite that other colors have like Red's impulse draw/rummaging or Black's sacrifice for power. Can we see more of a push in forms of White card draw that thematically fit, like charity (Secret Rendez-Vous), compensation (Discerning Financier), and retribution (Esper Sentinel) with less ETB card draw and "draw a card because you did something" (Wedding Announcement, Welcoming Vampire)?

The flavor is white draws long, that is it sets up the proper condition and then gets rewarded with card draw over time. It’s slow, methodical card draw.

Defining 'Warps the Format'

New 09 Jun 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 34 Comments

For folks unclear on what "warps the format" means, consider that in Modern and Legacy, any creature with cost 3 or more and power 3 or less is basically unplayable (Unless it has a strong ETB or similar upsides). There are just too many people playing lightning bolt and your creature is extremely likely to be cheaply removed by the game's best (and perhaps best-balanced-for-its-early-power-level?) common card.

Correct. Lightning Bolt prevents a lot of creatures from seeing tournament play.

Landfall Mechanic Definition

Is "if you had a land enter the battlefield under your control this turn" still considered Landfall?

Landfall is “Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control,”.

Changing Ability Word to Keyword

Is changing an Ability Word to a Keyword considered functional errata? Like if you changed "Landfall - Whenever a land enters the battlefield..." to "Whenever you landfall...."

It is functional errata.

Energy on ETB Balancing

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 32 Comments

Is there a mechanical reason why most cards (especially in MH3) that give Energy on ETB give 2 Energy instead of just 1?

I assume for game balance.

All Creatures Fight/Bite Spell

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by braveswordwielder 5 Comments

A theoretical “all creatures fight/bite” spell seems like it’s going to be Day of Judgment (or at least Duneblast) in 99% of situations. Seems like it goes squarely into the “deathtouch + ETB fight” category to me, even if a functional template could be figured out.

It would probably be multicolored, if we did it.

Green’s Role in Card Draw

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by brotein-manganiello 13 Comments

can a creature with ETB draw two be G/U hybrid?

I’m skeptical green would do that.

"Enters the Battlefield" Update

New 30 May 2024 Asked by lylethebloody 32 Comments

I may have missed something but I was delighted to see that "enters the battlefield" is back in MH3. Also... Always appreciate the retro frame!

“Enters the battlefield” hasn’t left yet. It changes to “enters” in Bloomburrow.

Urza's Destiny Trivia

New 16 May 2024 Asked by jmart1841 8 Comments

Today is my thirtieth birthday. To celebrate the milestone, may I have a piece of obscure trivia about either Magic’s thirtieth planeswalker type, Ugin, or Magic’s thirtieth set (counting Limited Edition as a single entry), Urza’s Destiny? Thank you for everything you and your team continue to do for the game and community.

Urza’s Destiny was the one expansion where I was the sole design team. It premiered the flicker ability which was inspired by self-phasing, but triggering ETB effects. I originally designed a vertical cycle in white, but it got cut down to a single rare (with the ability closest to my common design).

Design Change Effects

New 11 May 2024 Asked by owenkirby 7 Comments

Hi Mark, from what I understand about the changes in design due to play boosters. Common cards will be relying more on creatures with etb abilities. Is this a correct assessment?Thank-you

I think that might happen, due to numerous factors, but other solutions to those issues exist, so it won’t always happen.

Red's Impulsive Draw

New 07 May 2024 Asked by szwanger 31 Comments

Could red get a creature with an etb trigger of "impulsive draw - you can cast the exiled card as long as this creature remains on the battlefield"?

We’re experimenting with having longer durations with impulsive draw, but we still want some amount of uncertainty. So, maybe. : )

Pondering Host/Augment through Text Effects

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by quadruptytch 24 Comments

Could host/augment be achieved through text changing effects in black border (replacing 'when ~ enters' with ...)? And make every etb creature hostable?

Interacting open-ended with any ETB effect would most likely cause some corner case issues. We could probably design a mechanic that played in that space as we could control the effects.
