Possible Return of 8ed Frame

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by thenbnerd 4 Comments

Not sure if you're the person to ask, but

If or When - 8ed frame return in any form?

I started right before the switch to m15 frame and have been pretty bummed out seeing retro frame every couple sets, would love to see some strong cards and staples from after the switch like arcane signet, sheoldred, fatal push, etc in that frame. I'd definitely purchase any secret lair with any cards no matter how weak if they were in 8ed frame, though I'm probably in the minority there.

I’m not sure how many retro frames we can support.

Potential Future Frame Changes

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by mistereff 15 Comments

It has been about 10 years since the introduction of the m15 frame, and about 20 years since the eighth edition frame was introduced.
Would magic ever consider doing a major frame change for regular (non-showcase) cards again? And if they did, what is the likelihood the new frame would in any way resemble the Future Sight frame?

Each frame change has been more minor than the last. I assume any change in the future would follow that pattern.

Reprints in Sets

New 17 Nov 2023 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 33 Comments

Mark, I was understanding but disappointed that Fungusaur, last seen in 8ed, wasn't included in Caverns. Have you ever done a Drives to Work about why the relevant reams choose to include or not include on-theme reprints in a set?

There are a lot of moving pieces in designing a set. Yes, we look for in-flavor reprints, but with 27,000+ cards, there’s simply no way to reprint everything that could potentially fit. The reprint has to fit many criteria, the biggest of which is synergy with other elements.

Tombstone Icon Feedback

New 02 Feb 2023 Asked by ghostlygideon 56 Comments

I got introduced to Magic with Onslaught and always found the tombstone icon confusing. Even once someone explained that it didn't do anything itself, was just a reminder for a graveyard effect, I didn't really get it since I have to read the card to know the effect anyway so it struck me more as visual nuisance than helpful reminder. I do find newer symbols like DFC icons helpful though. Do you think it would have been better received if tied to a specific mechanic like flashback?

The tombstone went away interestingly for printing reasons and not audience reaction reasons. It didn’t work with the Eighth Edition frame, so we just made it an Odyssey block thing. The original plan was to make it a permanent part of Magic. I don’t think the message of “this works in the graveyard” was fundamentally flawed.

Planar Chaos Frames

I second the request for the Planar Chaos frames, those are my favorite by a long shot.

They were designed to be halfway between the original frames and the Eighth Edition frames.

8th Edition Frames Nostalgia

New 30 Oct 2022 Asked by kriosuranous 34 Comments

How long do you think it’s gonna be before we see cards with the 8th edition frame again in the same vein as the retro frames?

Are there people out there that are more nostalgic for Eighth edition frames than retro frames?

Water Gun Balloon Game Misprint

New 29 Nov 2021 Asked by annorax 31 Comments

The preview of the release promo Water Gun Balloon Game has an oval stamp and a black border. Will that promo be actually printed with an acorn stamp? As printed, it technically legalizes the original silver-bordered printing of Water Gun Balloon Game in the Eternal formats, which calls back to why The Cheese Stands Alone couldn't be reprinted in Eighth Edition.

The original card image in the article (which I think has been fixed) was in error. The printed card will have an acorn security stamp.

Trivia on Card Frame Designs

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by lanz37 47 Comments

Hey Mark! I think my Birthday trivia got buried, so I'd love to get some trivia about card frames. My favorite frames are the Mystic Archive and Planar Chaos frames, but I'll accept trivia about any of them : )

The Player Chaos frames were designed as a what if for if we make the “eighth edition” frames hew closer to the original Alpha frames. Happy Belated Birthday!

Reprints Border Decision

New 26 Jul 2019 Asked by evileyeball 38 Comments

About the question on white boarder Was the "first in black all reprints In white" abandoned when it was decided to put reprints in non core set expansions? I can't assume a set with mixed borders would be at all possible.

No, the decision was made in Eighth Edition, I believe. It was basically “the cards just look so much better in black border and it’s what the audience prefers”.

Modern Masters Suggestion

New 22 Dec 2016 Asked by kandykidzero 40 Comments

Frank Lepore brought up an interesting point for the ongoing "supplemental cards for Modern" debate. Could Modern Masters be used to reprint supplemental set cards into Modern? He also mentioned that just allowing them to be Modern legal could be included by the precedent set by the current Planeswalker/Welcome decks that introduce cards for standard that can't be opened in boosters. You could state that only cards originally printed first in Mirrodin or later are legal to keep Sol Ring, etc out

The problem becomes a messaging one. How do you properly convey which cards are and are not legal for Modern? “Every Standard legal set from Eighth Edition forward” is pretty stratigraphy forward. “Plus a bunch of random sets that we have to list by name” (which would grow lengthy over time) is not.

Eighth Edition Promotion

New 09 Apr 2016 Asked by nobthehobbit 44 Comments

"I tried very hard to get Booster Tutor into Eighth Edition as part of the “a card from every set” promotion." Except that Booster Tutor is from Unhinged, which is post-Eighth Edition. I thought the Un-card you tried to get into Eighth Edition was The Cheese Stands Alone. (Also, Zur's Weirding is from Ice Age.)

You are correct. It was the Cheese Stands Alone.

Black Border Wishes

New 09 Apr 2016 Asked by connorzworld 15 Comments

Hey Mark, If you could chose a silver bordered card to be in black border magic, what would you try to bring into currnet day black border (Disregarding Zur's Weriding and other cards that have already made the shift) ?

I tried very hard to get Booster Tutor into Eighth Edition as part of the “a card from every set” promotion.

Slivers Evolution

New 23 Dec 2015 Asked by mrphillipjones54 88 Comments

I can't remember but with your market research did the new take on slivers get viewed as a positive or negative, mechanically I mean, I don't care about the art, but a big fan of the change, wish they were all like the new cards.

Mechanically, players preferred the change. I’ll tell a story to hit this point. Many years ago, we ran a promotion called “Selecting Eighth Edition” where we let the audience vote on which of two cards to include in the next core set (Eighth Edition obviously). One of our biggest votes was Crusade vs. Glorious Anthem. Crusade is a card from Alpha that costs WW and it grants all white creatures +1/+1. Glorious Anthem is a card from Urza’s Saga that costs 1WW and it grants all your creatures +1/+1.Crusade had been out of the Standard for a while and the card is pretty powerful, but development had decided it was okay to bring it back. Rather than just put it in the set, we decided to let the public vote it in. We put it up against a card that was similar but powerwise weaker. We were shocked when Glorious Anthem defeated Crusade. We did a little research and started finding more evidence that many players didn’t like it when their cards helped the opponent’s creatures. And when we dug deeper, we also discovered that less experienced players weren’t even aware that your cards could help the opponent’s creatures. Why would your card do that?So we decided that we needed to shift how we thought of lords. Slivers got changed later because the first time they came back after the shift was Time Spiral block and we felt that it would be wrong in a block all about nostalgia to change them then, so we decided that the next time we brought them back we’d make the change. As I mentioned in another post, the original plan was to give them a new creature type, but we ran some internal playlets with people outside of R&D and we kept getting the same comment. “Why aren’t these Slivers?” So we changed them to Slivers.

Early Gaming Memories

New 08 Aug 2015 Asked by mccager 28 Comments

Hey Mark! I've been playing since Odyssey block but when I learned to play it was with my friend's big-brother's ice age cards. When he and I learned the game it was mostly through the cards themselves. I always remember he and I pooling all the resources 2 12-year-olds could muster over a summer to buy a box of Eighth Edition and one particular card was spellbook which we looked at in some confusion... as we had never once considered that there might be a maximum hand size.

Card Reprint Mix-Up

New 20 Jun 2015 Asked by innatebehavior 12 Comments

I think you're misremembering something re: black-bordered Booster Tutor. Unhinged came out after 8th Edition, so how would you have tried to reprint it? When you told this story before I think it was The Cheese Stands Alone.

You’re correct. It was the Cheese Stands Alone. I did try to get Booster Tutor into a core set but not Eighth Edition.

Wished Black-Border Card

Booster Tutor. I tried to get it into Eighth Edition.

Silver to Black Transition

New 01 Mar 2015 Asked by asw122 18 Comments

You mentioned the cheese stands alone, a silver bordered card that became black border. Are there any more silver border cards that you want to get to black border but haven't quite managed yet?

I tried very hard to get Booster Tutor as Unglued’s representative in Eighth Edition but it turns out we can’t print a card in both silver and black borders.

Fate Reforged Design Idea

New 23 Dec 2014 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 46 Comments

This might sound stupid, but here goes: a few days ago, I was talking with a good friend and we came to the conclusion that it would have been awesome for Fate Reforged, as a set flavored as a travel to Tarkir's past, to be done in the "classic," pre-Eighth Edition border, and would easily set you apart from other games because WotC retconned its entire flagship product for purely flavor reasons. Please tell me this was at least considered by Creative/Design.

We already did that joke in Time Spiral.

Eighth Edition Choices

New 26 Jun 2014 Asked by tsilini 14 Comments

Back when it was decided to have a card from every set released up to that point in I believe it was Eighth Edition...why didn't you go for the Unglued basic lands once you realized The Cheese Stands Alone wouldn't work?

There were those that didn’t feel the Un-sets were supposed to be part of the promotion. Also, each set had one card. One full-art basic land feels very odd.
