Card Reprint Decision Making

New 11 Apr 2020 Asked by admiralmemo 22 Comments

I've always wondered how much thought goes into the decision to print a reprint of a card vs. printing a functional reprint of a card. How much do you consider "Well, now Modern/Legacy/whatever players will effectively have 8 copies of this card" (e.g. Krenko's Command/Dragon Fodder)? How much is just the set's flavor (e.g. Yoked Ox/Tasseled Dromedary)?

It’s a combination of all the factors.

Goblin Token Pricing

New 14 Jul 2018 Asked by dude1818 60 Comments

For 1R, you can get two goblin tokens (Dragon Fodder). For 1RR, you can get three goblin tokens (Hordeling Outburst). So why does 3.5 goblin tokens cost 4RR (Box of Free-Range Goblins)?

For the potential of getting up to six (and maybe even more if you’re also playing black) and the hand dandy Goblin Explosioneers watermark. : ) The more serious answer is that effects are costed for the environment they are in and not necessarily against every other card that has ever done the effect.

Dinosaur Fodder Concept

New 06 Jan 2018 Asked by revealingmetal 24 Comments

I think the question about “Dinosaur Fodder” was referring to the card Dragon Fodder; the one that made Goblins because it’s what the dragons on Tarkington were going to eat. So Dinosaur Fodder would make tokens of the creatures the dinosaurs would eat like pirates or vampires.

Good point. I guess the new issue is red isn’t connected to any tribe that makes 1/1 tokens.

Anti-Invasion Set Mechanics

New 04 May 2017 Asked by deisfortuna 37 Comments

With regards to what was asked about an anti-invasion (non-creatures only), couldn't creature token sources just have a way higher frequency in that set/block to compensate for the lack of creatures in the set/block? (i.e stuff like dragon fodder or dance with devils)

Imagine the battlefield full of pennies or glass beads, representing a variety of different sized creatures. You think to yourself, “If only there was a way to represent the size and ability of each creature to make gameplay easier.” : )Either you’re playing the game with nothing but vanilla creatures, which would present numerous issues both from a functionality and gameplay standpoint, or you’re making more complex creature tokens at which point you should just be making creature cards.

Sorceries vs Instant Tokens

New 11 Jun 2016 Asked by gutturalcoprolalia 34 Comments

Why are dragon fodder and Krenko's command sorceries but raise the alarm an instant? Design or development?

White gets to be more defensive this it gets token making at instant speed. That’s not design or development. That’s color pie.

Meddling Kids' Interpretation

New 08 Oct 2015 Asked by bachtigh 18 Comments

Un-Rules question: When Meddling Kids refers to a card's "text box", what part of the card is that? If I choose the word "Goblin", my opponent can't cast Dragon Fodder, but can they cast Goblin Game? What about Ankle Shanker?

The text box is where the rules text, reminder text and flavor text reside. Meddling Kids do not affect a card’s title, mana cost, card type line, power/toughness or any legal text/collector number info.

Functional Reprints Flavor

What kind of thought process goes into making functional reprints (Krenko's command vs dragon fodder, ie.)? Is it mostly for flavor reasons?

Yes.

Green's Token Production

New 02 Aug 2015 Asked by jyhwk865 25 Comments

Is it possible for Green to get a token making instant like Dragon Fodder or Raise the Alarm, but making elves instead of goblins or soldiers?

We’ve moved away from Green making small tokens as a single effect so while possible it’s unlikely.

Token Spells Classification

New 27 Jul 2015 Asked by spadesslick 17 Comments

For design purposes, do spells that create tokens like Dragon Fodder count as both instants/sorceries and creatures?

They count as creatures for percentages in the file.

Dragon Fodder Origin

New 03 Jul 2015 Asked by strymon 32 Comments

Isn't Dragon Fodder from Jund? What's it doing in Origins? It could have at least had new art/flavor to fit it into, say, Regatha.

We counted Alara as one of the ten planes and allowed art from any of the five shards even though Gideon only visits Bant.

Reprint Indicators

New 23 Mar 2015 Asked by guyfrost 248 Comments

Could you add an indicator somewhere on the card when it's a reprint? I love Dragon Fodder doubly so now I know it's one.

Interesting idea. Would you all think having this info would be worth the trouble? Also, straight up reprints or all including new name?

Card Name Changes

New 18 Jun 2012 Asked by hubda 11 Comments

Why does Krenko's Command exist if we already have Dragon Fodder? They're the same card, except for the name. Is it just for flavor, or is it to allow players to put four of each in their decks? On that note, why do both Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds exist? Is it for the same reason?

We change names for three basic reasons: 1) The old name doesn’t fit for flavor reasons. 2) The new name is trying to play up something important with flavor. 3) We want to let you play with eight copies of the card. Krenko’s Command is #2. Evolving Wilds is #3.
