Mechanic Color Pie Limitations

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 7 Comments

Do you ever encounter issues where a mechanic that you want to be core to a set is too niche in its slice of the color pie? Like, food was a big theme in both Eldraine sets, but it is a mechanic that can only appear WGB, so you were limited somewhat in just how much you could use it compared to something disguise, which is a completely color-pie agnostic mechanic. When designing full custom sets I often have ideas for mechanics that seem to be total slam dunks, but are actually kind of limited in how much I can use them.

It happens from time to time. It’s why vision design checks in with the Council of Colors.

Black's Game Dynamics

Can Black still turn creatures into 0/2s like Sudden Spoiling or Sorceress Queen?

It’s not in black’s slice of color pie, but more bend than break.

Reprinting 'Ali from Cairo' Joke

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by araglar 4 Comments

Since Ali from Cairo is on the Reserved List, and looks like a clear color pie break, and references a real-world city, I'm guessing that its odds of being reprinted in "Cairo" are slim, to say the least. But has anyone joked about putting it in the file?

Not yet, but I didn’t think of it. : )

Future Mechanical Color Pie Article

Speaking of the color pie evolving, do you think you'll write a new mechanical color pie article in 2025?

Probably. I’m aiming for roughly every four years.

Desired Color Pie Changes

Are there any changes or shifts to the color pie that you want to see but haven't been able to make yet?

Some subtle ones.

Color Abilities Evolution

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by ge-hi 8 Comments

Are there any examples of things that were once considered bends for colors that are now just something those colors can do?

The color pie evolves over time, so yes. For example, vigilance in blue was once a bend and is now a regular ability.

Approach to Color-breaking Cards

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by alwaysatoad 4 Comments

Hey Mark! I'm wondering, why do you allow yourself to reprint color-breaking cards? It gives players, especially newer players, the wrong idea about the color pie. Instead of reprinting Chaos Warp, why not either (A) print a different, non-breaking card that achieves whatever it is Chaos Warp achieves for red, or (B) change the color pie so Chaos Warp isn't a break?

The problem is players want access to the cards. The compromise was to not add them to formats that they aren’t legal in. That’s why color pie breaks won’t get reprinted in premier sets (not counting bonus sheets that don’t change card legality).

Color Pie Break/Bend

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by quantext 3 Comments

Would Finest Hour be considered a color pie break/bend today?

I think white is secondary in extra combat steps, but we do the effect so infrequently that’s it’s tough for secondary to get many cards.

Ethos Differences in Magic and D&D

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by blorpityblorpboop 2 Comments

Can we have a podcast about the differences and analogies in Ethos between Magic and D&D(Color pie vs. alignments)?

I am not nearly as well versed in D&D’s alignments as I am Magic’s color pie.

Color Pie and Rate Philosophy

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 1 Comments

"The rate is probably too good, but that’s not a color pie issue" Is this a change from your prior philosophy about the colour pie? You used to consider Swords to Plowshares a break simply due to its rate.

Extreme rate can cause color pie breaks, but only in areas where multiple colors do the same thing and one color is supposed to be weaker at it.

Question on Concordant Crossroads

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by deathworld12 5 Comments

is concordant crossroads a bend break or neither?

Green is secondary in haste. Usually granting the ability is more for the primary color than the secondary, but we do allow the secondary color to do it a little. The rate is probably too good, but that’s not a color pie issue.

Investigating Card Distribution

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by sjk9000 6 Comments

Does giving the opponent cards have a specific place in the color pie?I only took a cursory glance through a card database to research this question, so I could be very off, but it seems like white most often lets an opponent draw a card as a 'compensation'. Red traditionally has wheel effects, and blue has a bunch of "everybody draws" effects. Black and green have little to nothing.Despite that, any color seems to be able to "gift a card" in Bloomburrow. Is that just an exception because it's a set mechanic?

We found the best gift options and then made sure each color had gift(s) that made sense for that color.

Color Pie Breaks

Was there any color pie break printed after the creation of the Council of Colors?

There have been, but they occur much less. Things can still slip through the cracks.

Quantity of Full Color Pie Break Cards

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by patronics-blog 5 Comments

Roughly how many cards have been printed that you’d consider a full color pie break? Is it just a few or a lot?

It’s a bunch. The vast majority are from the first half of Magic.

Reprinting Choices in Commander Products

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by zombsidian 23 Comments

Why do we get cards reprinted in Commander products, like Chaos Warp, that are breaks but get reprinted, while cards like Cabal Ritual don't get reprints in these types of products even though they're less of a break?

Reprint products are allowed to reprint color pie breaks as long as they don’t add them to a new format. I assume they reprint Chaos Warp more than Cabal Ritual because it’s more in demand.

Validating Parting Gust's Function

Is Parting Gust a color pie break in multiplayer? You can exile an opponent's creature and give the gift to a different opponent.

White can exile creatures.

Color Schemes in Character Costumes

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 7 Comments

Have y'all done testing with non Magic players looking at UB characters with iconic existing color schemes in colors that clash with that scheme - Spiderman in black green to use a dramatic and probably out of pie example - and see if the frames confuse them? Do people pick up on it easily?

A character having a costume/outfit that are Magic colors doesn’t make them those colors within the game, so it doesn’t matter if some non-Magic players take time to understand it. Players grasping the color pie is an important early step in the game.

Assassin's Creed Cards Trivia

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 30 Comments

At long last, it is time to invoke my birthday trivia! I love your pieces on the color pie and I’m a huge Assassin’s Creed fan, so I’d love if you had any interesting trivia on AC cards that the Council of Colors discussed or tweaked. If nothing comes to mind, I am a massive fan of Boros and Minotaurs; if there’s any trivia about Boros Minotaurs, that would be lovely, or either individually. I get a ton from DtW and Making Magic, keep up the wonderful work!

In Theros block, Minotaurs power and toughness had to add up to a least 5. We made one exception later in the block.Happy Birthday!

Color Pie and Category Pricing

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 26 Comments

Color Pie Question. Can a card’s base rate (mana value, power, toughness, etc.) cause color Pie bends or breaks? I say yes, but others have said no since card balance and the color pie are different topics according to them. For instance, targeted creature removal is generally more restrictive/less efficient in White compared to Black. If you take the card Quicksand Whirlpool and reduce the Mana cost from 5W to 1W, would this be 1. only a card balance issue, 2. a bend, or 3. a break?

There are places where rate matters in the color pie, but usually it’s does this color do this effect or not?

Mastering Color Conflicts and Alliances

When recalling which color are allies and enemies of which, do you instinctively know their relationships or do you mentally recreate the color pie?

I know all the conflicts and alliances by heart.
