Bant (W/U/G)

Tricolor Card Costing Pattern

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by blind42-blog 36 Comments

If two-mana three-color cards became a regular occurrence, would they be more likely to cost both hybrids with their central color, or their central color plus either of their allies/enemies? E.g. for Bant: blue/white + green/white vs. white + green/blue

One locked color with a hybrid mana of two other colors is easier to design than two different hybrid cards with an overlapping color.

Bant Design Team

New 16 May 2024 Asked by cooldude46290 17 Comments

On this, my most birthiest of days, I invoke the holy right of trivia! Specifically, about Bant (the mini-plane, not WUG).

The Bant mini-design team was led by Brian Tinsman and included Ken Nagle and myself. When Brian first pitched exalted, I was very skeptical. I said it seemed like too small a hoop to jump through. We playteested and it played great, so I went to Brian and said, “I was wrong. Exalted is great.” I think Bant was the first team to settle on its keyword.Happy Birthday!

Three-Colour Combinations

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 14 Comments

So far Temur, Bant, Esper, Naya and Grixis have been previewed. Can we expect all 10 three-colour combinations in OTJ ?

No, all ten are not there.

Mana Cost Ordering

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by aork14 52 Comments

"Hi Mark, in mana costs, for mixing hybrid mana and non hybrid (and mixing different hybrid mana symbols too like Leyline of the Guildpact) is there an official order that you guys go by?"ft
As far as I can tell, it just follows the normal mana color order, with the hybrid mana symbols placed in-between their respective colors to "connect" them, like in compleated Tamiyo the phyrexian hybrid mana was in-between its two colors. So like, as an example, if there were a hypothetical bant card with one of each color and then a hybrid White/Blue and a hybrid Green/White, it would be templated as G g/w W w/b B

That sounds correct.

Character Design Decisions

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 33 Comments

the face cards for the MKM commander decks were revealed today, and morska the bant general looks just like a ravnican merfolk but is instead a "vedalken fish"? can you, or somebody, explain how and why this was decided?

She’s a Vedalken that adapted herself through Simic technology. Those creature types are always animals, not other creature races. A Bant Merfolk commander will happen one day. This just wasn’t the appropriate place for it.

Bant Doctor Who Deck

New 14 Oct 2023 Asked by omnivirus2-blog 48 Comments

In the Bant Doctor Who deck I saw that there was a Blue Doctor's Companion but no Selesnya Doctor. Was there any consideration for a Selesnya Doctor in the Bant deck?

The designers matched each Doctor based on flavor. They didn’t look to match all the color combinations.

Characters' Color Identities

Re: Spider-Man, would it be safe to say that Peter is WUG and Miles is WRG?

That sounds right. Note that with any character that has a lot of stories told about them, that you can capture many different color combinations. Those are what I agree are the overall colors.

Alara's Return Possibility

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by durzio 47 Comments

If/when return to Alara? It's one of my favorite planes, where my interest really picked up in magic, and I'd love a birthday fact about it! :)

If, but I hope when. It was the only design team to have five distinct mini teams (one per share). Each mini team was made up of three people. I led the Esper mini team, and was on the Bant and Naya mini teams.Happy Birthday!

Bant Trivia Fact

New 09 Jul 2023 Asked by thehieromancer-deactivated20231 44 Comments

Invoking the ancient right of birthday trivia, can I ask for a fact about Bant? (The place or the colour combination)

The Bant mini team was led by Brian Tinsman and included Ken Nagle and myself. When Brian first pitched exalted, I didn’t like it as it felt like too small a hoop. We playtested it, and after that first playtest, I told Brian I was wrong. Exalted was a great mechanic. Happy Birthday!

Three-Color Podcasts

New 17 Jun 2023 Asked by fzzr 40 Comments

Green-White-Blue has been my favorite color combination since before it was called "Bant", so your podcast on that topic was delightful. I think you found a good way to handle the three-color podcasts, going over how each color works as the center. That's going to be extra interesting when you talk about wedges, since you used non-center colors as the the focus in Khans. Reviewing how each internal pair works was also a great thing to include. Looking forward to the episode about my second favorite color combination, White-Black-Red!

I put off doing them for so long because I didn’t have a good structure. I was happy with the idea of looking at it with each color as the center.

Belenon's Theme Shift

New 25 Apr 2023 Asked by luckyshiny 56 Comments

Why did Belenon go from "Abstract alien architecture, and bizarre alien creatures" world to "Animal Knights" world? We already had Bant and, to an extent, Ravnica for animal knights.

Because abstract alien architecture doesn’t lead to a world of creatures.

Exalted Mechanic Trivia

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by epson777341 54 Comments

Wondering if I could get some birthday trivia on my favorite mechanic, exalted. It's the first mechanic I built a deck around and I recently tore it up to make 2 commander decks.

I had a bad first reaction to exalted when Brian Tinsman first pitched it in our Bant mini-team for Shards of Alara. I thought it was too narrow of a hoop. But after the first playtest, I apologized to Brian. I said, “I was wrong. This mechanic is great.”The important lesson. Always playtest your ideas. Theorycrafting (what we call trying to think through an idea by just talking about it) only gets you so far.Happy Birthday!

More Wedge Commanders

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by strix-soven 36 Comments

May I request more wedge commanders? There are nearly 2x as many shard as wedge. In case you're interested: Sultai 17, Temur 15, Jeskai 19, Abzan 12, Mardu 23. Wedge total 86. Esper 34, Grixis 39, Jund 28, Naya 30, Bant 29. Shard total 160.

We do them in about equal numbers. The discrepancy comes from the fact that we used to do a lot more of the ally combinations than the enemy ones.

That’s my initial thought too.

Bant Plane Trivia

New 09 Dec 2022 Asked by baron-von-lucas 55 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my birthday yesterday, and I'm wondering if you had any Trivia on Bant aligned planeswalkers or tribes? Thanks!

We remade planeswalkers in the Mending, so we could power them down, as it’s hard using omnipotent characters in a story. Then we made Amintou, who controls fate, and we’ve found her tricky to use. I do hope to see her again though. Happy Birthday!

Designing Alara and Capenna Sets

New 15 Apr 2022 Asked by cottasteel 33 Comments

Hi Mark, since Streets of New Capenna and the Alara block are both bottom-up designs based on a tri-color shard mechanic, would it have been possible, in theory, to have designed a Return to Alara set that assigned the SNC faction mechanics instead to their corresponding shard (Bant gets shield, Grixis gets casualty etc.)?

When we return to a world with factions, we try to synergize the different incarnations, so they play well together. This means we wouldn’t use the Streets of New Capenna takes on the arcs in an Alara set.

Lack of Thematic Differences in Capenna

New 10 Apr 2022 Asked by braveswordwielder 83 Comments

I personally don’t feel the Capenna families differ enough thematically. They all have the same goal, they all seem to have the same view of society and the world, and despite being based on different crime tropes, they all seem to use the same methods. There are a lot of flavor texts in this set where, if you pulled them off the card and presented them in isolation, could have been said by any of the families. It really does feel like the only difference between them is aesthetic — how do you want your violent, money-grubbing gang to dress? This has never previously been a problem for Magic’s factions. There’s no confusing the Orzhov with the Simic, or Bant with Esper, or Jeskai with Temur, even when they share colors. I do wonder if there’s really enough trope space in this genre to support a five-faction world. (This is not helped by two of the families barely appearing in the fiction, incidentally.)

Streets of New Capenna is trying something a little different in that all the factions are based on different categories within the same genre. If we want to do a lot of faction sets (and we do, players like them), we have to explore ways to do it without chewing up as much conceptual space. Each are as different mechanically as other faction sets, but the flavor is a little tighter.

Three-Color Cards Sequence

New 24 Mar 2022 Asked by rs-torres 62 Comments

Hey Mark! I noticed something that got me curious... I'm used to the WUBRG color sequence in Magic, and thought every card followed this pattern, but I noticed that's not true! Speaking about the 3-color cards, Grixis, Esper, Jund, Temur and Abzan cards follow the WUBRG sequence in its mana cost, but Jeskai, Naya, Mardu, Sultai and Bant cards do not, and I have to ask... why?

All ten three-color pairs do actually follow a WUBRG pattern. The central color, the one with two allies in arcs and two enemies in wedges, is in the middle. Then the colors follow the two-color order. For example, we use WU and GW, so the arc mana is GWU. Likewise, we use WB and RW so that order is RWB.

Trivia on Bant and Ajani

good morning Mark!! today (the 23rd) is my birthday, so i was wondering if i could get some trivia on either Bant (my personal favorite shard of Alara) or Ajani (my favorite planeswalker)? thank you!!

In early market research, Ajani was the lowest scoring planeswalker. With time, he’s climbed to one of the most popular. Happy Birthday!

W/U/G Creature Untap Mechanic

New 06 Jan 2022 Asked by cranberrycaptain 23 Comments

You said that W/U/G gets creatures that untap in response to certain game actions. Does that make thermo-alchemist and goblin sharpshooter bends/breaks?

Those are bends, but doable in the right circumstances.
