Alexander Clamilton Trivia

New 25 Aug 2023 Asked by coatsville 102 Comments

Today is my wife’s birthday and she’s not a huge fan of magic but does like the Un-Sets. Her favorite card is Alexander Clamilton. Happen to have any birthday trivia on that card for her?

We were brainstorming names for our legendary Clamfolk. Someone said Alexander Clamilton, and I said, “Onay, we’re done. That’s it!”Happy Birthday to your wife!

Deciphering Alexander Clamilton Ability

New 01 Dec 2021 Asked by quantext 35 Comments

Un-set rules question. If I have an Alexander Clamilton and I activate his ability to reveal one of the basic lands from the all text secret lair, does it count as 0 or 23 lines of rules text?

23 (assuming that’s how many lines there are).

Alexander Clamilton Card's Interactions

New 23 Sep 2021 Asked by barreldogzilla 32 Comments

"Hi, Un-rules question. Do full text lands work with Alexander Clamilton?" "They do." That's only for his mana ability, right? Since lands are not spells, it doesn't scry, or am I missing something?

Correct. Lands aren’t “cast”.

Best part about the full-text basics is this: empowered by them, Alexander Clamilton can take out Emrakul Herself! (The full-text Mountain has 23 lines of rules text.) All hail our new clammy overlords!

Rebels Mechanic Return?

New 10 Jan 2021 Asked by arsghostia 42 Comments

Are rebels going to ever make a come back?

Do you count Alexander Clamilton? : )I think we might use the creature type if the right flavor for it comes along. I’m skeptical the rebel mechanic is ever returning.

Duh vs Alexander Clamilton

New 15 May 2020 Asked by olyviarayne 38 Comments

Can Duh destroy Alexander Clamilton? Trying to decide if the italics explaining wordy is considered a reminder text or not since wordy isn't considered a known rule.

It’s definitely reminder text, so yes, Duh will kill him.

Text Consideration for Un-Cards

New 10 Mar 2020 Asked by minoke5618 22 Comments

The rules of adventurer cards tell you to ignore the Adventure side when not being cast. Does that mean that Un-cards that look at lines of gametext like Alexander Clamilton will ignore the Adventure text too?

No, wordy looks at all the lines of rules text on a card.

Understanding Stet's Name

New 29 Feb 2020 Asked by serefin 43 Comments

Okay, it took me a while, but I finally got the puns in Syr Cadian and Pippa's names, and Alexander Clamilton and Acornelia are fairly obvious. What's the pun in Stet's name?

It’s not a pun. It’s an editing term.

Hi Mark, is it possible to get a foil Alexander Clamilton in Unsanctioned or are all cards Un-Foil? Looking forward to the set for my Un-Cube!

The only foil cards in Unsanctioned are the cycle of foil full-art lands.

Alexander Clamilton's Name

New 11 Feb 2020 Asked by suerterec 50 Comments

Hi mark ! I just read your column about Unsanctionned, and I have to say that I have been really surprised with the story behind the name of Alexander Clamilton ! In my country, most people would have undrestood a pun on Calamity Jane, while a lot more have no idea about who Alexander Hamilton even is. Anyway, it made me curious about American history, so good job to the designers !

If only Calamity Jane had a hit musical about her. : )

Letter and Symbol Nuances

New 01 Feb 2020 Asked by zanmor 33 Comments

I'm curious why Alexander Clamilton cares about the individual cards when counting lines of text, but Stet wouldn't care about what's actually printed on the cards when deciding how to handle Æ if that's what's printed on that particular card. Personally I think in that case it should count as one letter (though I could also see it being a special symbol Stet doesn't interact with), not that it gets treated as an A and an E. Thoughts?

Only in Dutch is the ligature it’s own letter. Everywhere else, including importantly English, it’s a representation of A and e. That means it isn’t actually a letter but a fancy way of representing when a capital A is next to a lower case e.

Alexander Clamilton Text

New 31 Jan 2020 Asked by scarkan 37 Comments

Regarding Alexander Clamilton, if for instance the text box of a card is wordier in the Spanish card I have, compared to the English one I don't, do I consider the wordyness of the Spanish or the English card?

In silver border, when you are asked to care about the qualities of the physical card, like lines of text, you look at the actual card. If the Spanish one is wordier, play with a Spanish version.

Alexander Clamilton Abilities

New 30 Jan 2020 Asked by bidoofvselite-four 31 Comments

So are all of the abilities on a planeswalker count as rules text for alexander clamilton? Also does reminder text count, assuming the card revealed has reminder text.

Wordy only counts rules text, not reminder text or flavor text (basically not things that are italicized). As long as a line has one word of rules text, it counts as a line of rules text. So yes, planeswalkers’ loyalty abilities count.

Creating Alexander Clamilton

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by theoreticalmagician 88 Comments

Did you design Alexander Clamilton? I know that you go to BroadwayCon with your daughter every year, and I've invented a story in my head that you were inspired by her love for Hamilton or something like that. I don't suppose that's the actual story?

I wanted a Clamfolk. The original design was Clamity Jane, but I didn’t think enough people would get the reference. I asked the Pit to come up with a good punny clan name. Chris Mooney suggested Alexander Clamiton. I said that was it, then he and Ari Nieh designed it.

Alexander Clamilton Praise

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by itscrispycoffeecollector 57 Comments

Sung to the opening number of Hamilton[How does a bivalve, oyster, pun on a war/ Vet and Shellfish, shown in the middle of a clam-mander duel/ In possession of an aqueous armament standing,/ In a hard shell, show up to be an advisor and a rebel?] Alexander Clamilton is a shell-smashing success of a design! Please distribute high fives all around! I absolutely love the duel mechanic and it feels like it could absolutely be black border with only a couple of minor tweaks.

High fives to be delivered. Lines of rules text is a silver border only thing as reprints don’t always have the same number of lines of rules text.

Wastes and Textless Rules

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by magiwarriorx 33 Comments

Regarding Alexander Clamilton, a) do Wastes have rules text? They don't have an associated land type, so unlike other basics "{T}: Add {C}." is actually part of their Oracle text, even though all printed Wastes just have the {C} symbol in their text box. b) Do textless cards go by their Oracle text, or do they have 0 rules text? (ex, textless Cryptic Command).

Silver border looks at the actual card in question to figure out things like rules text.
