The One Ring Trivia

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by rc-ds2 36 Comments

Hello, Good Sir,You’ve said in the past that the 1996 World Champion card had to be printed on a full sheet, and the rest of the sheet was destroyed. Did a similar thing happen with the 1 of 1 The One Ring? If you aren’t able to discuss that specifically, do you have any neat trivia regarding its printing that you can share? Thanks very much.

I don’t know exactly how The One Ring was printed, but I do know printing technology has changed quite a bit from 1996.

Alphabetical Ordering Logic

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by mgmegadog 42 Comments

Please order the following list alphabetically: _______, +2 Mace, 1996 World Champion, "Lifetime" Pass Holder. Alpha Strike makes the order of these cards relevant.

It’s nothing, then numbers in ascending order, then cards in alphabetical order. You ignore punctuation and underscores for alphabetization.

Revised Oracle Text Request

What is the revised oracle text for the 1996 World Champion card? What is the creature type?

I don’t think it has Oracle text, so my best guess is it currently doesn’t have a creature type.

Where can I find the 1996 World Champion card? I'd like to put it into my 5 color Sisay Weatherlight commander deck. I'm having a hard time finding the one copy that was made.

Still embedded in the trophy. I’m not sure who currently owns it. I believe Tom Champheng sold it years ago.

You can’t have an activated ability that works while in the library.

1996 World Champion Rules

New 22 Sep 2018 Asked by shyflops 50 Comments

"We have rules about how many cards of a certain thing we have to print. I don’t know exact numbers, but it’s greater than 1." but that didn't stop you from making 1996 World Champion

That’s not actually a playable card. For example, it doesn’t even work within the rules. But it was imbedded in a trophy so we didn’t worry about it being played.

Isn't 1996 World Champion a 5 mana card with only colored mana in the casting cost?

It’s not an actual Magic card though. It doesn’t even work within the rules. But yes, if you counted it, it would count.

Vintage Legality Count

New 25 Jan 2018 Asked by lgosvse 49 Comments

Re: "How many cards are there?" It ultimately depends on what you count as a card. Do Un-cards count? What about 1996 World Champion? What about Planes/Schemes/Phenomena/etc.? What about Richard Garfield's life celebration cards? This makes the question difficult to answer. But a far easier question is "How many cards are currently legal in Vintage?" and the answer to that is 17,198.

You can only cast cards legal in the format you are playing. It’s in the FAQ.

1996 Champion Rarity

The card "1996 World Champion" is often described as the most rare Magic: The Gathering card. However, as far as I can tell, it is not included in Gatherer. Does it still count as a Magic: The Gathering card?

It was a promotional card never released in a product.

Favorite Dragon Cards

New 20 Sep 2015 Asked by henro88 53 Comments

It's my birthday, and I wanted some trivia - but I can't think of anything interesting to ask about. Could you tell us about your favorite dragon cards?

In the Guinness Book of World Records, two cards are listed as the rarest trading card game cards in the world. 1996 World Champion and Shichifukujin Dragon both have only one copy in existence. I had the honor of designing both cards. 1996 World Champion was given to Tom Chanpheng, the 1996 World Champion. It is embedded in his trophy. Shichifukujin Dragon was a card we made for our Japanese partner at the time to display in their main tournament center. Happy Birthday!

1996 Champion's Legality

New 11 Jun 2015 Asked by aceofmoxes 30 Comments

At the time of its printing, 1996 World Champion was declared legal in all formats forever. WotC made a promise, and you know WotC holds onto promises made in the the first years of the game.

Fair enough. If you can produce it, I guess you can play it. Tournament rules do dictate that it can’t be differentiated from the rest of the deck. : ) It also has some Commander problems as its main ability requires it to be in the library.
