Trivia about Vizzerdrix

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by hexooze 2 Comments

Hi Mark!
Yesterday is my birthday. May I get trivia among one of my favorite cards - Worldfire, Wurmcoil Engine, Radiant Performer, Sundial of the Infinite, or Vizzerdrix? Or a random card from MH3 not covered by your previous Making Magic articles?

Vizzerdrix got created as a card for a product called Starter. The reason we made it is we had a series of TV commercials, one of which featured Kezzerdrix from Tempest (it involved mixing a wrestler, a chainsaw, and a bunny in a machine). A different ad in the same campaign used an Orgg. So to tie to those, we made a simpler Orgg and Vizzerdrix, as the original cards were too complicated for a beginner product.Happy Belated Birthday!

Extreme wariness.

Red's Sweeping Exceptions

New 15 Dec 2015 Asked by memecucker 23 Comments

Red occasionally gets massive expensive sweepers. Older versions like Jokulhaups or Obliterate were basically "destroy everything except enchantments" whereas more recent ones like Worldfire and Bearer of the Heavens blow up all permanents including enchantments. Are those an exception to the "red cant touch enchantments" rule?

We toyed around with the idea that Red can destroy enchantments if it destroys everything but have long moved away from those types of cards.

Worldfire Trivia

New 06 Aug 2015 Asked by gustavegraves 43 Comments

Yesterday was my birthday, would you happen to have any trivia on the card that got me into Magic, Worldfire? Thanks!

We occasionally let Red destroy enchantments if it destroys EVERYTHING! Worldfire is an example of this tiny sliver of Red’s color pie. Happy Birthday!

Red's Characteristics

New 31 Jan 2015 Asked by memecucker 49 Comments

How does red's impulsiveness and desire to get results now rather than later fit alongside how red is the color that gets the most expensive and most powerful boardwipes like Worldfire, Decree of Annihilation or Bearer of Heavens

Red is also the color of destruction. Red is not two-dimensional.

Red's World Reset

New 15 Jan 2015 Asked by silenceresplendant 32 Comments

In response to the "Red can't deal with enchantments", Can you tell which (if any) enchantments can survive Worldfire or Warp World?

I was exaggerating a little. Red is allowed to reset the world every once in a blue moon.

Archangel's Light Rarity

New 11 Feb 2013 Asked by shh-no-tears-only-jojo-now 7 Comments

I know a lot of people have asked about Archangel's Light, and you've given us the story of the last minute change and the mechanic you hope to salvage. If it was clear that the "fixed" version of Archangel's Light was going to be bad, why was it not bumped down from "Mythic Rare" to "Rare" status? I love fatty mythics like Worldfire and Enter the Infinite, but it's frustrating to buy a pack, crack a mythic, and have it be rated 1.25 on the gatherer community because it's awful/situational.

Because there comes a point late in the process where we try to change as little as absolutely necessary. Every late change increases the opportunity for errors in the final product.

Unique Card Design Enjoyment

New 11 Dec 2012 Asked by grodytoadie-blog 15 Comments

Who designed Omniscience, Worldfire, and Door to Nothingness? And how excited are they to see those cards actually seeing some competitive play in the form of the deck, "OmniDoor Thragfire"? I must say, this is one thing I love about Magic. Everyone writes these cards off as unplayable or casual only, and someone finds the perfect concoction of spells to make them actually work. It's utterly brilliant!

Aaron Forsythe and I designed Door to Nothingness although the design version said “Destroy target creature or player.” I’m not sure who designed the other two. One of my favorite things about Magic is how no card can ever truly be written off. Cards can be horrible up until the day they break the format.

Worldfire Ban Thoughts

New 22 Sep 2012 Asked by gladecover-scout-blog-blog 5 Comments

What is your reaction to the EDH "Rules Committee" banning Worldfire?

I don’t play the format so I don’t have a reaction. I trust them as a group.

Chaos Warp Discussion

New 08 Aug 2012 Asked by chaosof99 3 Comments

So Chaos Warp goes against the Color Pie in your opinion. How about Warp World? Isn't it the same effect only on a different scale, or does the scale make it acceptable for red to blow up enchantments in the same manner as Apocalypse and Worldfire allow it. And if so, is this the only effect that is wrong for one color in small scale, but okay in large scale?

My issues with Chaos Warp are mostly execution. The idea of red harnessing chaos is an interesting one and it isn’t off the table as a means of finding cool things for red to do.

Worldfire Combo Design

Was Worldfire designed specifically to combo with Oblivion Ring + the Cheese Stands Alone?

I’ve consulted with the powers that be and they have informed me that I am not allow to deny cool things.

Worldfire Commander Impact

New 17 Jun 2012 Asked by pocketfulofgeek 11 Comments

With regards to "Worldfire"; a lot of players seem to be claiming it will instantly be banned in Commander due to so many "I win" combos with it. I personally hope that isn't the case. Worldfire to me is EXACTLY what mono-red needed in Commander, and my Jaya Ballard deck thanks you for it! basically what I'm saying is: Please don't ban Worldfire in commander, Red needs it!

We, meaning Wizards, don’t do the banned list for commander. That is overseen by an outside group.

Worldfire's Dual Appeal

New 16 Jun 2012 Asked by chumblywumbly 4 Comments

I'm having an argument with my friend. He insists that Worldfire doesn't appeal to people who identify with Timmy, and that it's strictly a Johnny card. I think it appeals to both Timmy and Johnny. Can you help me explain to him why Worldfire is a card Timmy would like?

It is both a Timmy and a Johnny card. In my last Timmy, Johnny, Spike article (“Timmy, Johnny, Spike Revisited”), I talked about subsets of the different psychographics. One of the Timmy subsets is adrenalin gamers that love to do crazy things for the thrill that comes with doing them. A Timmy using Worldfire often won’t have a plan - he just wants to see what will happen. Johnny, in contrast, has a whole plan set up before he ever cast the Worldfire. Worldfire's Design Philosophy

New 12 Jun 2012 Asked by ricardolongo 14 Comments

Just saw Worldfire previewed. I though it was the coolest big timmy red spell in a loooong while... then I saw it actually removes enchantments. Come on, Maro! You gotta fight harder for us color pie purists!

Red has had the ability for years to remove everything. That’s how red removes enchantments - scorched earth!!!
