Trivia on Barrin or Obliterate

New 07 Aug 2020 Asked by blood-fish-god 49 Comments

Waited a year for this, so invoking birthday trivia! Can I have trivia on either my favorite card, Obliterate, or the character depicted, Barrin?

When we created the Weatherlight Saga characters, we wanted to tie someone to the previous story, The Brothers War. We liked the idea that Hanna grew up at the Tolarian Academy, so we created the character of Barrin to be her father and tied him to Urza. Happy Birthday!

Red's Creature Destruction

Assuming for some strange reason you decided you needed another card like Degree of annihilation and obliterate, could red still do “destroy/exile all creatures” in association with “destroy/exile all artifacts and lands”?

No. Red doesn’t do creature destruction any more.

Hanna's Untold Saga

Hi Mark, I almost forgot to ask for birthday trivia! Do you have any trivia to share on Hanna? What would she have been like in the unused Weatherlight story arc?

Hanna was the daughter of Barrin (Urza’s right hand man). The spell Obliterate (in Invasion) is Barrin destroying everything he can out of grief of losing Hanna. Happy Birthday!

Red's Sweeping Exceptions

New 15 Dec 2015 Asked by memecucker 23 Comments

Red occasionally gets massive expensive sweepers. Older versions like Jokulhaups or Obliterate were basically "destroy everything except enchantments" whereas more recent ones like Worldfire and Bearer of the Heavens blow up all permanents including enchantments. Are those an exception to the "red cant touch enchantments" rule?

We toyed around with the idea that Red can destroy enchantments if it destroys everything but have long moved away from those types of cards.

Today's my father-in-law's birthday! Any trivia on Barrin, Gerrard's almost-father-in-law?

Obliterate is Barrin grieving the death of his daughter Hanna. Happy Birthday to your Father-in-Law!

Eldrazi vs Phyrexians

New 01 Mar 2015 Asked by praywaits 58 Comments

I'm confused. Don't Eldrazi just obliterate everything around them? How could anybody fight that, even Phyrexians?

The big question is can the Phyrexians Phyrexize (a word I made up) the Eldrazi? I don’t know the answer.
